From First Gen To Faculty: A Narrative Study Of First-Generation College Students Who Became Community College Faculty, Patrick Nevins
From First Gen To Faculty: A Narrative Study Of First-Generation College Students Who Became Community College Faculty, Patrick Nevins
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of first-generation community college faculty through narrative inquiry. Qualitative data were collected through semi-standard interviews with full-time community college faculty who were first-generation college students. In the first level of analysis, narrative accounts were created from the data, and in the second level of analysis, narrative accounts were compared for the identification of codes. Three themes emerged from data analysis: (a) being college bound from school age, (b) facing barriers to academic success as undergraduates, and (c) relating to students as faculty. The implications of the study are that first-generation …
Persistence Of Female Faculty In Stem, Andrea Constantinou
Persistence Of Female Faculty In Stem, Andrea Constantinou
Dissertations
The lack of women entering certain STEM fields impacts female representation in research faculty, teacher faculty, and leadership positions in higher education. Through a narrative inquiry methodology utilizing the theoretical paradigms of self-determination theory and relational autonomy, this study extended understanding of the factors that motivate persistence for women in certain STEM fields. While prior research focused on understanding the barriers to retention, this study sought to identify the factors motivating retention for women in certain STEM fields. The results of this study contribute to understanding the motivating factors that influence a woman’s persistence in STEM. The data gathered from …

Defining Faculty’S Role In Supporting Student Mental Health Needs In Higher Education, Erica B. Riba
Defining Faculty’S Role In Supporting Student Mental Health Needs In Higher Education, Erica B. Riba
Student Theses
The subject of mental health among college students has been prevalent for decades. Today, college students are facing more challenges to mental wellness than ever before. Faculty are often the first and only point of contact for many students. Faculty have a role to play in supporting student mental health, but that role has not been clearly defined. This study aims to bring clarity to some of these critical issues and offers a lens into this broad topic from faculty themselves. A mixed-methods design was used for this study. 889 people who have downloaded The Jed Foundation’s Faculty Guide to …

Understanding Perspectives Of Power In A College Mathematics Classroom, Laura Seeberger
Understanding Perspectives Of Power In A College Mathematics Classroom, Laura Seeberger
Honors College Theses
Power is embedded in teacher and student actions within mathematics classrooms, whether that power is known or not. Incorporating equity and inclusiveness requires a deeper understanding of this power behind actions. In this study, we developed and administered a three part survey questioning college faculty and college students how they perceive power related to common actions within a college mathematics classroom. For example, participants were asked whether a college math teacher assigning homework increased, decreased, or did both to the teacher’s power; then whether this action increased, decreased, or did both to a student’s power. Analysis of 16 faculty and …

Understanding Faculty Perception Of Completely Asynchronous And Synchronous Online Education On Student Retention At Community Colleges In Western Pennsylvania: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Of The Faculty Online Education Experience, Sally A. Mercer
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to understand completely online education’s impact on student retention for faculty at community colleges in western Pennsylvania. The theory guiding this study was Michael G. Moore’s transactional distance theory, which centers on three components of online education—structure, communication, and student autonomy. The literature review revealed these factors, and their relevant sub-factors all influence faculty’s experience and knowledge of the factors that impact student retention. The central research question for this study was as follows: What are faculty’s perceptions of completely asynchronous and synchronous education at community colleges in western Pennsylvania? This study …
Faculty Learning Community: Advancing Faculty Academic Advising Pedagogy, Linda Jean Raynard
Faculty Learning Community: Advancing Faculty Academic Advising Pedagogy, Linda Jean Raynard
Masters Projects
Within higher educational institutions faculty may serve in a faculty advising role. The quality of faculty advising conversations can impact student’s sense of mattering and support to campus leadership, community, and beyond. Faculty, however, have competing priorities and a lack of pathological training that has prevented them from investing deeper in advising practices. Students may then miss important opportunities to initially connect with campus leaders about their curricular and co-curricular development. To better operationalize academic advising practices for faculty to use in their everyday student conversations, a faculty learning community is suggested to aid. The Faculty Learning Community: Advancing Faculty …

Investigating The Effects Of Bisphenol-A On Planaria Phototaxis And Survival, Reyna Docine, Alexis Galindez, Cassandra S. Korte
Student Publications and Presentations
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a potentially toxic plasticizing compound in various consumer products like food and beverage containers and toys. Research suggests exposure poses a significant risk to human health, leading to neurological effects, including anxiety, aggression, and cognitive defects. Planaria flatworms (like species Girardia dorotocephala), free living aquatic flatworms known for their regenerative properties and well-characterized nervous system, are valuable models for studying the impact of environmental toxins. Their distinct photophobic response to light offers insight into potential neurotoxic effects. While the impact of BPA on regeneration has been studied in some species of planaria, its effects on specific …

The Effect Of Exercise On The Short-Term Memory Of College Students, Daniella Bastos, Carly Mcneill, Daniel Ceccoli, Patrick J. Cooper
Student Publications and Presentations
Aerobic exercise, in particular, has consistently demonstrated positive effects on short-term memory, attributed to increased cerebral blood flow, neurogenesis, and enhanced synaptic plasticity. The purpose of this research project is to evaluate that hypothesis in a cohort of college students between the ages of 18 and 25 by testing the participants short term memory capacity prior to exercising on a treadmill for a period of thirty (30) minutes and then re-testing the participants short term memory immediately after the exercise period. The short-term memory will be evaluated using the "Digit Span" memory test. Participants will be asked to perform the …

Sea level rise is causing archeological sites in Florida to get wet. It’s unknown how the artifacts will be affected by getting wet. This study investigates how one type of artifact (gar scales) is affected physically and chemically by wetting. This study tested the hypothesis that pristine gar scales retain less water compared to degraded scales. The independent variable was scale condition (pristine vs. degraded). The dependent variable was water weight retention. 32 pristine and 32 degraded gar scales were collected from an archaeological site and weighed prior to soaking in water for 4 days. After soaking all the gar …

Infrared spectroscopy (IR) is a powerful tool in archaeology to understand the chemical composition of artifacts. Bone digenesis is the chemical and physical process by which bones degrade over time. Archeologists discovered that archaeological bones from different excavation sites have different states of physical diagenesis, depending on site conditions. Methods are needed to quantify the chemical aspect bone digenesis. We are using fish scales, from South Inlet Park in Florida as a model to test IR spectroscopy as a new method to quantify bone digenesis. In this experiment, we used excavated fish scales and categorized them into three diagenetic categories: …

Effects Of A Mentorship Program On High Need College Students: Reflections From Mentors And Mentees, Stephen Miske, Olusegun Sogunro
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
On average, the college graduation rates for minority and/or high-need students are generally low. To address this situation, a Mid-Atlantic Consortium recently secured a grant to improve 4-year graduation rates of high-need students (i.e., new first-time students and transfer students who qualify as low-income students, first-generation college students, adult students, and/or students of color) by 20% over each selected college’s baseline. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the experiences of students and faculty mentors toward accomplishing this goal. Data were transcribed, coded, and analyzed thematically. Some of the effects identified in this study included enhanced academic …

The United States government makes a substantial investment in biomedical training programs each year. However, for most trainees, these opportunities do not translate into career progression in academic research pathways. Only about one-fifth of postdoctoral fellows eventually secure a tenure-track faculty position, and even among these candidates, attrition is high. Although a number of factors govern career choices and career longevity, the transition from trainee to faculty is a challenging process and requires knowledge and skills that are not necessarily developed during a traditional university experience. Many postdoctoral fellows receive adequate training in research skills and scientific communication, but new …

Understanding Universal Design For Learning Implementation: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Of The Experiences Of Higher Education Faculty And Instructional Designers, Breanne A. Kirsch
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
Faculty face a rising challenge in supporting diverse student populations on campuses (Bastedo et al., 2013). Inclusive pedagogy, facilitated by UDL, helps alleviate learning barriers for diverse student groups (Basham & Blackorby, 2021). However, the ambiguous operational definition of UDL poses practical challenges in implementation and assessment (Diedrich, 2021), especially when it is described variably as a practice, framework, or intervention in the literature (Basham & Blackorby, 2021). This hermeneutic phenomenological study explores the meaning faculty and instructional designers ascribe to the experience of implementing UDL in higher education.
The main question is: what is the meaning that faculty and …
