Students and postdoctoral associates interested in tenure-track environmental engineering positions have limited resources to aid them. The Student Services Committee (SSC) of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP) organized a workshop to fill some of the need. Newly hired faculty and experienced search committee and department chairs shared information on how to create competitive applications. Students and postdoctoral associates were also provided with individualized feedback on their faculty application packages. Survey data were collected for all participants, and these data are presented in this paper along with tips shared during the workshop and information collected from the …

Perceptions Of Creativity Among Faculty In Higher Education, Ellie Melissa Potter
Perceptions Of Creativity Among Faculty In Higher Education, Ellie Melissa Potter
Masters Theses
Higher education instructors do not sufficiently incorporate creativity in the teaching and learning environments within which they operate. While there is a great deal of research available regarding creativity and primary or secondary education, there is little research available regarding creativity and higher education. This study contributes to that gap of knowledge by surveying faculty members in one institution of higher education in order to understand their perspectives regarding creativity, both as it relates to being a creative individual and to teaching others to be creative themselves. There were 358 faculty members who participated in the online survey designed specifically …

What’S Ahead In Faculty Collective Bargaining? The New And The Déjà Vu, Daniel J. Julius, Nicholas Digiovanni Jr.
What’S Ahead In Faculty Collective Bargaining? The New And The Déjà Vu, Daniel J. Julius, Nicholas Digiovanni Jr.
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
As faculty collective bargaining reaches the half-century mark, the authors take a critical look at what has or has not worked at the bargaining table; how the early expectations of what faculty bargaining would bring to the academy have or have not been realized; and what the future holds, both in terms of process and the substantive issues that will be brought to the table. Dr. Julius has been a faculty member, administrator and employer representative in negotiations at many institutions; Mr. DiGiovanni has served a labor counsel and has negotiated with faculty unions at numerous institutions since the late …

Nlrb V. Yeshiva University: Teacher Participants In University Policy Formulation Deemed Managerial Under Nlra, Valerie A. Moore
Pepperdine Law Review
The development of a "status quo" for teacher bargaining unit certification was brought to an abrupt halt by the recent Supreme Court Yeshiva decision. The author, in agreement with the majority opinion, examines the development of this "status quo" and the cases leading up to and including the Supreme Court's determination that the Yeshiva faculty were managerial employees and thus exempt from coverage under the National Labor Relations Act. Also, the author illustrates the Supreme Court's unfavorable reaction to the National Labor Relations Board's cursory and inconsistent administrative decisions and opinions.

Graduate Teaching Assistants' Perceptions Of Their Preparation For Teaching In Departments Of Communication Studies At Selected Universities, Brenda Atkins-Randle
Graduate Teaching Assistants' Perceptions Of Their Preparation For Teaching In Departments Of Communication Studies At Selected Universities, Brenda Atkins-Randle
Student Theses and Dissertations
The study examined the adequacy of preparation that graduate teaching assistants receive before or during the pursuit of their graduate degree. Specifically, this study looked at graduate teaching assistants' perceptions of their particular programs. Additionally, this study explored how prevalent or non-prevalent TA training was before and/or during services as a Teaching Assistant, the strengths and weaknesses of training program components, the intensity of training programs, the role faculty mentoring played in TA training and the differences in perceptions based on gender and degree status (Master's versus Doctoral). The researcher was interested in identifying and assessing the adequacy of graduate …

Promoting A Culture Of Integrity: A Study Of Faculty And Student Perceptions Of Academic Dishonesty At A Large Public Midwestern University, Tanisha Nicole Stevens
Dissertations
Research reveals that reducing academic misconduct requires an understanding of factors that influence the two key stakeholders in the epidemic: students who engage in academically dishonest behaviors and faculty who are charged with the responsibility of reporting and deterring the behavior (e.g., Prenshaw, Straughan & Albers-Miller, 2000). In response, a body of research reveals that in order to alter the environment in which academic dishonesty occurs, an understanding of how individuals perceive dishonesty and its severity is of great importance (Roberts & Rabinowitz, 1992). Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to examine faculty perceptions and student perceptions of academic …

2013 Service-Learning Faculty Survey Results Report, Office Of Service-Learning, Division Of Community Engagement, Virginia Commonwealth University
Division of Community Engagement Resources
Service-learning is an important teaching pedagogy that has been proven effective in enhancing student learning and promoting both academic and civic engagement. As civic engagement continues to gain prominence as an integral aspect of higher education, it is increasingly important that engagement metrics are consistently measured to demonstrate outcomes. This is especially true of service-learning as it strongly correlates with student learning, academic performance, and retention rates. Feedback and suggestions from service-learning faculty members are useful for gaining insights into how service-learning quality can be enhanced at the classroom level and understanding the resource needs of faculty members.
The purpose …

Photo-based diagnosis and treatment methods are gaining prominence due to increased spatial imaging resolution, minimally invasive modalities involved as well as localized treatment. Recently, nanoparticles (NPs) have been developed and used in photo-based therapeutic applications. While some nanomaterials have inherent photo-based imaging capabilities, others including polymeric NPs act as nanocarriers to deliver various fluorescent dyes or photosensitizers for photoimaging and therapeutic applications. These applications can vary from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and optical imaging to photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy. Materials commonly used for development of photo-based NPs ranges from metal-based (gold, silver and silica) to polymer- based (chitosan, dextran, …
