Cortical spreading depolarization (SD) is a slow self-propagating wave of mass cellular depolarization in brain tissue, thought to be the underlying cause of migraine scintillating scotoma and aura, and associated with stroke, traumatic brain injury, and termination of status epilepticus. The N-methyl-d-aspartate subtype of glutamate receptor (NMDAR), which gates influx of calcium and is an important trigger of long-term synaptic plasticity, is also a contributor to the initiation and propagation of SD. The current study tested the potential of pharmacological modulation of NMDAR activity through the obligatory co-agonist binding site, to suppress the initiation of SD, and modulate the effects …

Review In Motion: Multi-Year Electronic Resources Review At Uta Libraries, Peter Zhang, Ashley Zmau
UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive
With a flat budget and ever increasing inflation for serials, UTA Libraries chose to embark on a multi-year electronic resources review process. Targeting low hanging fruits, the first step was to review subscription journals included in aggregator databases. This initial review process was also a relatively straightforward step to help new liaisons in a newly created Outreach & Scholarship department to get their "feet wet"with collection development. As liaisons become more acclimated, the second step in the following year is to review all single e-journal subscriptions, distributed amongst all liaisons. Guidelines and metrics are created to facilitate the review in …

The goal of this article is to describe the broad curricular constructs surrounding teaching and learning about social media in dental education. This analysis takes into account timing, development, and assessment of the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors needed to effectively use social media tools as a contemporary dentist. Three developmental stages in a student's path to becoming a competent professional are described: from undergraduate to dental student, from the classroom and preclinical simulation laboratory to the clinical setting, and from dental student to licensed practitioner. Considerations for developing the dental curriculum and suggestions for effective instruction at each stage …

Social media consist of powerful tools that impact not only communication but relationships among people, thus posing an inherent challenge to the traditional standards of who we are as dental educators and what we can expect of each other. This article examines how the world of social media has changed dental education. Its goal is to outline the complex issues that social media use presents for academic dental institutions and to examine these issues from personal, professional, and legal perspectives. After providing an update on social media, the article considers the advantages and risks associated with the use of social …
The Genesis Of The Graziadio School Of Business And Management: A Little Department At A Small Liberal Arts College Transforms Into A Nimble, Notable School At A Dynamic, Expanding University, Edward Rockey
GSBM Faculty Scholarship
At Pepperdine College, during the mid-1960’s, a small Department of Business Administration and Economics, with only three full-time faculty members and two “Auxiliary” faculty, began to grow into what is now known as the Graziadio School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University. This document about the beginnings of what became GSBM does not attempt to be an exhaustive history. Covering the period of the mid-1960’s and then the 1968- 78 deanship of Donald R. Sime, it focuses primarily on such aspects as: The school’s energetic, entrepreneurial dynamics; its remarkable growth in a short period of time; and its distinctive …

Continuum-Scale Investigation Of Evaporation From Bare Soil Under Different Boundary And Initial Conditions: An Evaluation Of Nonequilibrium Phase Change, Andrew C. Trautz, Kathleen M. Smits, Abdullah Cihan

Evaporation and condensation in bare soils govern water and energy fluxes between the land and atmosphere. Phase change between liquid water and water vapor is commonly evaluated in soil hydrology using an assumption of instantaneous phase change (i.e., chemical equilibrium). Past experimental studies have shown that finite volatilization and condensation times can be observed under certain environmental conditions, thereby questioning the validity of this assumption. A comparison between equilibrium and nonequilibrium phase change modeling approaches showed that the latter is able to provide better estimates of evaporation, justifying the need for more research on this topic. Several formulations based on …

Conventional reconstruction of diffuse optical tomography (DOT) is based on the Tikhonov regularization and the white Gaussian noise assumption. Consequently, the reconstructed DOT images usually have a low spatial resolution. In this work, we have derived a novel quantification method for noise variance based on the linear Rytov approximation of the photon diffusion equation. Specifically, we have implemented this quantification of noise variance to normalize the measurement signals from all source-detector channels along with sparsity regularization to provide high-quality DOT images. Multiple experiments from computer simulations and laboratory phantoms were performed to validate and support the newly developed algorithm. The …

Linear regression with short source-detector separation channels (S-channels) as references is an efficient way to overcome significant physiological interference from the superficial layer for functional nearinfrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). However, the co-located configuration of Schannels and long source-detector separation channels (L-channels) is difficult to achieve in practice. In this study, we recorded superficial interference with S-channels in multiple scalp regions. We found that superficial interference has overall frequency-specific and globally symmetrical patterns. The performance of linear regression is also dependent on these patterns, indicating the possibility of simplifying the Schannel configurations for multiregional fNIRS imaging.

Evaporation is directly influenced by the interactions between the atmosphere, land surface and soil subsurface. This work aims to experimentally study evaporation under various surface boundary conditions to improve our current understanding and characterization of this multiphase phenomenon as well as to validate numerical heat and mass transfer theories that couple Navier-Stokes flow in the atmosphere and Darcian flow in the porous media. Experimental data were collected using a unique soil tank apparatus interfaced with a small climate controlled wind tunnel. The experimental apparatus was instrumented with a suite of state of the art sensor technologies for the continuous and …

Confronting The Nursing Faculty Shortage: Identifying Solutions To Address The Issue, Stacy Ann Emerson
Confronting The Nursing Faculty Shortage: Identifying Solutions To Address The Issue, Stacy Ann Emerson
Student Theses and Dissertations
Recently there has been much attention focused on the shortage of nurses in the United States with an anticipated deficit in excess of one million registered nurses by 2020. Practical and theoretical explanations for the shortage often cite a lack of nursing faculty as a contributing factor to the crisis. Each year, thousands of qualified students are denied admission to nursing schools across the nation, in large part due to lack of faculty and clinical resources. Although economic, social, and financial motivators may provide clues as to why so few nurses pursue faculty lines, solutions for reversing the trend, such …

Faculty Parental Status: An Investigation Of Network Homophily, Marginalization, And Supportive Work–Family Academic Culture, Megumi Watanabe
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Serious incompatibility between work and family life among faculty is well known, and various work-family policies have become available to faculty. Due to the traditional academic work culture (e.g., the ideal worker norms and the individualism norms), however, these policies tend to be underused. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an academic work culture that is more supportive of faculty’s work-family needs. Using data collected on tenure-line faculty at a research-intensive Midwestern university, this dissertation pursues three complementary research objectives that provide new insight into the culture of academic work environments. First, based on social identity theory and homophily theory, …

Workers Can't Find Jobs, Jobs Can't Find Workers: Solving The Talent Paradox, Harika Rao
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
A plethora of recent employment surveys have identified the 'talent paradox' implying the inability of the employers to find suitable workers despite the abundant availability of undergraduates reportedly due to the lack of future work skills. Against this backdrop, this study aims to illuminate the need for improving the marketability of the undergraduate students by infusing hitherto untested combination of the two interventional models, namely, Edward de Bono's Six Thinking Hats and Stephen R Covey's 7 Habits of the Highly Effective People. ' The very dynamic nature of the unemployment problem among undergraduates is of current and continuing interest not …

The prognosis is very dismal for patients with relapsed CD20(+) B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL). Facilitating the development of alternative novel therapeutic strategies is required to improve outcomes in patients with recurrent/refractory CD20(+) B-NHL. In this study, we investigated functional activities of anti-CD20 CAR-modified, expanded peripheral blood NK cells (exPBNK) following mRNA nucleofection against CD20(+) B-NHL in vitro and in vivo. CAR(+) exPBNK had significantly enhanced in vitro cytotoxicity, compared with CAR(-) exPBNK against CD20(+) Ramos (P < 0.05), Daudi, Raji, and two rituximab-resistant cell lines, Raji-2R and Raji-4RH (P < 0.001). As expected, there was no significant difference against CD20(-) RS4;11 and Jurkat cells. CD107a degranulation and intracellular IFNγ production were also enhanced in CAR(+) exPBNK in response to CD20(+) B-NHL -: specific stimulation. In Raji-Luc and Raji-2R-Luc xenografted NOD/SCID/γ-chain(-/-) (NSG) mice, the luciferase signals measured in the CAR(+) exPBNK-treated group were significantly reduced, compared with the signals measured in the untreated mice and in mice treated with the CAR(-) exPBNK. Furthermore, the CAR exPBNK-treated mice had significantly extended survival time (P < 0.001) and reduced tumor size, compared with those of the untreated and the CAR(-) exPBNK-treated mice (P < 0.05). These preclinical data suggest that ex vivo-exPBNK modified with anti-CD20 CAR may have therapeutic potential for treating patients with poor-risk CD20(+) hematologic malignancies.

The purpose of this study is to investigate healthcare access disparity that will cause delayed and unmet healthcare needs for the elderly, and to examine health inequality and healthcare cost burden for the elderly. To produce clear policy applications, this study adapts a modified PRECEDE-PROCEED model for framing theoretical and experimental approaches. Data were collected from a large collection of the Community Tracking Study Household Survey 2003-2004 of the USA. Reliability and construct validity are examined for internal consistency and estimation of disparity and inequality are analyzed by using probit/ols regressions. The results show that predisposing factors (e.g., attitude, beliefs, …
