The City of North Richland Hills is situated eleven miles northeast of Fort Worth in the heart of the Dallas - Fort Worth Metroplex. NRH is completely within Tarrant County and has a contiguous city limit without extraterritorial jurisdiction. This means NRH cannot annex additional land. The city is approximately 90% built to capacity within the city limits. NRH had 70,441 residents ("North Richland Hills, Texas Population," 2019). In a recent survey, 96% of respondents believe NRH is a great place to live. This project was initiated to find a method for calculating costs of emergency services that include police, …

The development and permit approval process for the City of North Richland Hills (NRH) was explored with regard to the review process for development proposals, platting, and building permits. Currently, the city conducts a multi-departmental approach to review and approve the aforementioned, as well as other permits. NRH sought outside counsel to map out their platting and permit approval process in an effort to identify inefficiencies and bottlenecks, as well as to gather recommendations for process improvements that could be transferred to an electronic environment as they begin to implement this transition over the next 18 months. The goals and …
Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Of The Interplay Of Factors Affecting Burnout In Academic Medical Faculty., Tara Mckinley
Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Of The Interplay Of Factors Affecting Burnout In Academic Medical Faculty., Tara Mckinley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines burnout in academic medical faculty. The medical literature reports 30-45% of physicians are burned out and presents a long list of potential drivers of burnout. Interventions have shown limited success at the individual level and greater success at the organizational level, but large-scale interventions are typically time- and cost-intensive. Using the Job Demands-Resources Model (JD-R) and interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA), this study seeks to present the ways personal, interpersonal, and job characteristics are interpreted as demands or resources by faculty and how those demands and resources work together to drive or mitigate burnout. Over six chapters, this …

Since America was attacked by terrorists on 9/11, the use of torture for counterterrorism tactics has become a highly-debated issue. Approximately half of adults in the United States believe torture is effective in stopping a terrorist threat, said Dr. Casey Delehanty, assistant professor of political science at Gardner-Webb University. However, many interrogation professionals disagree and maintain that torture is often counterproductive.

Faculty And Staff Perception Of Financial Fraud In Higher Education, Stephanie Hammons
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This research was designed to survey full-time faculty and staff, from multiple universities, about their experience of fraud within their current and previous institution. Through the survey, we were provided insight into the perception of fraud within higher education institutions and the faculty and staff perception of how the institution handled it. Through the information provided in the survey, it is revealed if whether fraud is a rare occurrence at most institutions or if whether it is a bigger problem than it appears to be. In addition, we will learn how many instances of fraud within different institutions participants have …

Understanding The Development Of Honors Students’ Connections With Faculty, Shannon R. Dean
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
Nearly 40% of full-time students enrolled at four-year institutions depart within the first year. Previous research has shown college students are more likely to graduate if they have meaningful interactions with faculty. Honors students provide unique perspectives because of their high levels of interaction with faculty, yet not much is known about how these connections develop. The purpose of this study was to understand how honors students develop connections with faculty. Six upper-division students were interviewed, and participants reflected on meaningful connections made with faculty during their first year. Two themes were identified as influential in developing connections: approachability of …
Faculty As Honors Problem Solvers, Annmarie Guzy
Faculty As Honors Problem Solvers, Annmarie Guzy
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
Postsecondary honors educators are adept at identifying problems and proposing solutions in honors education, but they may not disseminate their solutions effectively. This essay argues that honors administrators should familiarize themselves with the professional and scholarly resources that NCHC institutional membership affords, and then they should share what they have learned with honors teaching faculty. Rather than simply serving as advisors on administrative and programmatic issues, honors faculty also need the tools and opportunities to be effective honors problem solvers for day-to-day pedagogical issues.

In 2013, ACRL published a white paper titled Intersections of Scholarly Communication and Information Literacy: Creating Strategic Collaborations for a Changing Academic Environment, which called for a more integrated approach to scholarly communication and information literacy outreach. This panel aims to continue the conversation started by the Intersections white paper, renewing the discussion about the value of intersectional work and providing new case studies and potential applications for participants to consider. The panel will conclude with audience participation about how the library community can structurally encourage cross-pollination between these two groups and continue to find new and emerging intersections.

Cultivating Grit: Faculty Influence On Females' Academic Success In Engineering Majors, Lisa Lynn Wymer
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships between the positive and negative factors that impact undergraduate female engineering students’ academic success in their programs. While females participate and persist in higher education at higher rates than their male counterparts, engineering is one field of study where gender disparity remains especially apparent, as males continue to outnumber females in engineering degree attainment (Ross, Kena, Rathbun, KewalRamani, Zhang, Kristapovich, & Manning, 2012, Schreuders, Mannon, & Rutherford, 2009, Tsui, 2009). The conceptual framework for this study was based on Tinto’s Longitudinal Model of Institutional Departure, which provides the theoretical foundation …

Gender Differences In Agu Journals, Karen Gonzalez, Alanna L. Lecher

Gender differences in the geoscience field have kept women away from equal opportunities and success. The current study addresses gender differences within journals published by the American Geophysical Union (AGU). This organization is the largest geology society comprising 60,000 members, but only 20% are women. This study replicates another study performed in astronomy. The astronomy study measured the gender differences in the number of citations that each work from female and male authors have obtained. The findings showed that the gender differences decreased over time, but overall women receive 10% fewer citations than men. The current research seeks to discover …

This study focuses on faculty knowledge, experiences, and attitudes regarding fraudulent journal operations. Many definitions presented to researchers contain two primary aspects to describe these intentional perpetrators: 1) the chief motivation to profit monetarily, and 2) the misleading promise of and failure to deliver on indicators of quality, such as peer review. While this definition is simple on its surface, when put into practice it often expands into discussions of poor or unethical practices by journal publishers. It is common to find lists of grievances clarifying acts that signal predatory or unethical practices, which are used to broadly classify journals …
