Navigating Early College: Literacy Experiences And Identity Negotiations Of Latina/O Students, Holly Hungerford-Kresser
Navigating Early College: Literacy Experiences And Identity Negotiations Of Latina/O Students, Holly Hungerford-Kresser

This research provides insight into the adjustments of urban-schooled Latina/o students as they enter higher education. This year-and-a-half-long qualitative case study focuses on connections between identity negotiations and the academic literacies of five Latina/o college students at a predominately White university. Specifically, I draw on sociocultural definitions of literacy along with literature that focuses on “identity as position” as a means of discussing the ways in which Latina/os are positioned by the discourses embedded in the academic literacies of the university. In seeming contradiction, the students in this study adopted critical perspectives as well as deficit perspectives as they navigated …
Complimentary And Complementary Discrimination In Faculty Hiring, Angela Onwuachi-Willig
Complimentary And Complementary Discrimination In Faculty Hiring, Angela Onwuachi-Willig
Faculty Scholarship
This Article focuses on one form of discrimination in faculty hiring. Specifically, this Article concentrates on discrimination against the "overqualified" minority faculty candidate, the candidate who is presumed to have too many opportunities and thus gets excluded from faculty interview lists and consideration. In so doing, this Article poses and answers the question: "Can exclusion from interviewing pools and selection based upon the notion that one is just 'too good' to recruit to a particular department constitute an actionable form of discrimination?" Part I of this Article begins by briefly reviewing the changes in faculty diversity and inclusion at colleges …

This paper describes a method for simulating univariate and multivariate Burr Type III and Type XII distributions with specified correlation matrices. The methodology is based on the derivation of the parametric forms of a pdf and cdf for this family of distributions. The paper shows how shap parameters can be computed for specified values of skew and kurtosis. It is also demonstrated how to compute percentage points and other measures of central tendency such as the mode, median, and trimmed mean. Examples are provided to demonstrate how this Burr family can be used in the context of distribution fitting using …

First-Year College Students And Faculty: A Comparison Of Expectations For Success, Jodi Ellen Koslow Martin
Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study is to identify and explore academic, social, and career-related expectations that first-year college students believe lead to their collegiate success as defined by their perception of persisting in higher education. Further investigation determines how these expectations align with faculty expectations of student success. Eight first-year college students and eight college instructors were interviewed about their expectations at a small, private college. Criteria for first-year students include residing on campus and graduating from high school within the last year. Eligible faculty teach at least one class at the first-year level.
The data from student interviews …

Splitting The Academy: The Emotions Of Intersectionality At Work, Helen A. Moore, Katherine Acosta, Gary Perry, Crystal Edwards
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Using labor market theory, we assess how we have constructed the teaching of required courses on diversity, with the potential splitting of the academy into distinctive labor markets. In-depth interviews with instructors of color and nonminorities who teach required diversity-education courses at a predominately white university are qualitatively assessed and describe the differences in the emotional labor attached to this segmented academic market. We identify specific dimensions of diversity teaching that attach to the job conditions of secondary labor markets, including the distortion of work loads and evidence of differential barriers in the emotional labor attached. These labor market conditions may …

The project for the Grapevine Fire Department (GFD) has been undertaken in order to examine their fire response data in correlation to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Their set standards that they produce are not mandatory; however, they are ideal when measuring the efficiency of an organization, specifically fire departments. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to research and determine the level of compliance the GFD has within these set standards and to address any shortcomings. The people this research will affect includes the members of the GFD, citizens of Grapevine, and various areas the GFD also covers …

On July 16, 2009, the School of Urban and Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Arlington hosted a daylong roundtable on how “climate leader” municipalities of North Central Texas—and urban planners in those communities—are responding to the looming challenge of climate change. The organizers invited the planning directors in selected North Central Texas communities to send staff members to participate. The targeted municipalities were those who are members of Cities for Climate Protection (ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability) or whose mayors have signed the Climate Protection Agreement (U.S. Conference of Mayors). Of the 17 such communities in the …
