Making It Work: Factors That Influence The Success Of Programs At Rural Community Colleges, Rebecca Calwell Jan 2014

Making It Work: Factors That Influence The Success Of Programs At Rural Community Colleges, Rebecca Calwell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Community colleges are expected to contribute to economic development efforts by implementing new programs that respond to the needs of business and industry. Program development is complex, especially for community colleges in rural areas where business and industry are scarce. This qualitative study explores the factors that influence successful occupational programs at rural community colleges. Participants included administrators, faculty members, and students associated with three rural community colleges in West Virginia, as well as one state-level administrator and a former community college president. This study indicates the importance of five factors that influence the success of occupational programs: demand for …

Chronic Ethanol Consumption Increases Myocardial Mitochondrial Dna Mutations: A Potential Contribution By Mitochondrial Topoisomerases, D Laurent, J E. Mathew, M Mitry, M Taft, A Force, J G. Edwards

NYMC Faculty Publications

AIMS: Alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM) presents as decreased myocardial contractility, arrhythmias and secondary non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy leading to heart failure. Mitochondrial dysfunction is known to have a significant role in the development and complications of ACM. This study investigated if chronic ethanol feeding promoted myocardial mitochondrial topoisomerase dysfunction as one underlying cause of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage and mitochondrial dysfunction in ACM. METHODS: The impact of chronic ethanol exposure on the myocardial mitochondria was examined in both neonatal cardiomyocytes using 50 mM ethanol for 6 days and in rats assigned to control or ethanol feeding groups for 4 months. RESULTS: Chronic …

A Comparison Of Reversible Versus Irreversible Protein Glutathionylation, Danyelle M. Townsend, Volodymyr I. Lushchak, Arthur J. Cooper Jan 2014

A Comparison Of Reversible Versus Irreversible Protein Glutathionylation, Danyelle M. Townsend, Volodymyr I. Lushchak, Arthur J. Cooper

NYMC Faculty Publications

Glutathionylation is generally a reversible posttranslational modification that occurs to cysteine residues that have been exposed to reactive oxygen species (P-SSG). This cyclical process can regulate various clusters of proteins, including those involved in critical cellular signaling functions. However, certain conditions can favor the formation of dehydroamino acids, such as 2,3-didehydroalanine (2,3-dehydroalanine, DHA) and 2,3-didehydrobutyrine (2,3-dehydrobutyrine), which can act as Michael acceptors. In turn, these can form Michael adducts with glutathione (GSH), resulting in the formation of a stable thioether conjugate, an irreversible process referred to as nonreducible glutathionylation. This is predicted to be prevalent in nature, particularly in more …

Intranasal Neuropeptide Y Reverses Anxiety And Depressive-Like Behavior Impaired By Single Prolonged Stress Ptsd Model, L I. Serova, M Laukova, L G. Alaluf, L Pucillo, E L. Sabban Jan 2014

Intranasal Neuropeptide Y Reverses Anxiety And Depressive-Like Behavior Impaired By Single Prolonged Stress Ptsd Model, L I. Serova, M Laukova, L G. Alaluf, L Pucillo, E L. Sabban

NYMC Faculty Publications

PTSD is a debilitating neuropsychiatric disorder and many patients do not respond sufficiently to current treatments. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is suggested to provide resilience to the development of PTSD and co-morbid depression. Injections of NPY to the rodent brain are anxiolytic. Recently we showed that intranasal delivery of NPY to rats before or immediately after exposure to single prolonged stress (SPS) animal model of PTSD prevented development of many biochemical and behavioral symptoms of PTSD, indicating its prophylactic potential. Here, we investigated whether intranasal NPY might provide benefits once symptoms have already developed. One week after exposure to SPS stressors, …

Relationship Between Sweat Chloride, Sodium, And Age In Clinically Obtained Samples, Nadav Traeger, Qiuhu Shi, Allen J. Dozor Jan 2014

Relationship Between Sweat Chloride, Sodium, And Age In Clinically Obtained Samples, Nadav Traeger, Qiuhu Shi, Allen J. Dozor

NYMC Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The relationship between sweat electrolytes and age is uncertain, as is the value of measuring sodium or the chloride:sodium ratio. METHODS: 13,785 sweat tests performed over 23 years at one center through the Macroduct collection in clinically obtained samples were analyzed. RESULTS: Sweat chloride tended to decrease over the first year of life, slowly increase until the fourth decade, then either level off or slightly decrease. In children, sweat sodium overlapped between those with positive and negative sweat tests, but not in adults. If the sweat test was positive, there was a higher likelihood of having a chloride:sodium ratio …

Microrna-194 (Mir-194) Regulates Romk Channel Activity By Targeting Intersectin 1, Dao-Hong Lin, Peng Yue, Chengbiao Zhang, Wen-Hui Wang

NYMC Faculty Publications

The aim of the study is to explore the role of miR-194 in mediating the effect of high-K (HK) intake on ROMK channel. Northern blot analysis showed that miR-194 was expressed in kidney and that HK intake increased while low-K intake decreased the expression of miR-194. Real-time PCR analysis further demonstrated that HK intake increased the miR-194 expression in the cortical collecting duct. HK intake decreased the expression of intersectin 1 (ITSN1) which enhanced With-No-Lysine Kinase (WNK)-induced endocytosis of ROMK. Expression of miR-194 mimic decreased luciferase reporter gene activity in HEK293 T cells transfected with ITSN-1-3'UTR containing the complementary seed …

Interlinking Of Hypoxia And Estrogen In Thyroid Cancer Progression, S Rajoria, E Hanly, A Nicolini, A L. George, J Geliebter, E J. Shin, R Suriano, A Carpi, R K. Tiwari Jan 2014

Interlinking Of Hypoxia And Estrogen In Thyroid Cancer Progression, S Rajoria, E Hanly, A Nicolini, A L. George, J Geliebter, E J. Shin, R Suriano, A Carpi, R K. Tiwari

NYMC Faculty Publications

Estrogen aids in neo-vascularization of various tumors during hypoxic conditions, however the role of estrogen within the hypoxic environment of thyroid cancer is not known. In a series of experimentations, using human thyroid cancer cells, we observed that estrogen and hypoxia modulate the hypoxia inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) signaling which is abrogated by the anti-estrogen fulvestrant and the HIF-1 inhibitor YC-1 (3-(5'-hydroxymethyl-2'-furyl)-1-benzylindazole). Furthermore, we found that the conditioned medium from estrogen treated thyroid cancer cells lead to enhanced migration and tubulogenesis of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) which is abrogated by HIF-1 inhibitor. These findings, in addition to our previous …

Peer Collaboration: Improving Teaching Through Comprehensive Peer Review, Shelley L. Smith Jan 2014

Peer Collaboration: Improving Teaching Through Comprehensive Peer Review, Shelley L. Smith

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This article includes a brief rationale and review of the literature on peer review of teaching (PRT). Based on that literature review, it offers a proposal for an optimal formative review process that results in a teaching portfolio that would reflect a faculty member’s efforts and successes in a critically reflective PRT process, and contributes to ongoing teaching improvement. It then looks at potential areas of faculty resistance and concern and offers a discussion of potential strategies to overcome those concerns.

Relative Clause Processing: Evidence From Russian, Iya Khelm Price, Jeffrey Witzel Jan 2014

Relative Clause Processing: Evidence From Russian, Iya Khelm Price, Jeffrey Witzel

Linguistics & TESOL Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

Studies on relative clauses (RCs) in a number of languages have shown that object-extracted RCs (ORCs) are more difficult to process than subject-extracted RCs (SRCs). SRC-ORC processing asymmetry has been attributed to: • Structural expectations (Levy, 2008) • Memory-based integration effects (Gibson, 2000) • RC subject vs. object extraction difficulty differences (Lin & Bever, 2006) In many languages, word order differences between SRCs and ORCs make it difficult to test among these accounts. Russian allows SRCs and ORCs to have the same linear word order (with case-marking distinguishing between the RC types).

Transformative learning is the most desired core outcome in adult education. The qualitative study examined critical reflections for professional transformation related to development and implementation of service-learning courses or projects from four university faculty members during enrollment in a Service-Learning Faculty Fellows program and post-servicelearning implementation. Reflective questions related to faculty perceptions of student learning, service-learning as pedagogy, and their own learning— transformation of, in, and by learning, respectively. Content analyses of faculty reflections resulted in three categories of transformation based on three preservice-learning and three post-servicelearning descriptive themes: (1) transformation of student learning from anticipatory integration to conflicts between …
