Predicting Posttraumatic Stress And Depression Symptoms Among Adolescents In The Extended Postpartum Period, John P. Connolly, Cheryl A. Anderson

Nursing Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

Background: Adolescent childbirth continues as a public health concern, and investigation of postpartum posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and depression is important to inform future research and practice. Longitudinal studies exploring PTSS alone or in combination with depression are non-existent for postpartum adolescent populations. This study aimed to identify stress/PTSS and depression symptoms at 72 hours and three, six, and nine months postpartum, and determine if symptoms at each time point predicted later symptoms. Methods: A convenience sample of 303 adolescents 13e19 years of age were recruited from two postpartum units of one, large, public hospital. The Impact of Event Scale …

Background: New methods for assessing diet in research are being developed to address the limitations of traditional dietary assessment methods. Mobile device–assisted ecological momentary diet assessment (mEMDA) is a new dietary assessment method that has not yet been optimized and has the potential to minimize recall biases and participant burden while maximizing ecological validity. There have been limited efforts to characterize the use of mEMDA in behavioral research settings. Objective: The aims of this study were to summarize mEMDA protocols used in research to date, to characterize key aspects of these assessment approaches, and to discuss the advantages and disadvantages …

What Are We Teaching Abroad? Faculty Goals For Short-Term Study Abroad Courses, Elizabeth Niehaus, Ashley Wegener Nov 2018

What Are We Teaching Abroad? Faculty Goals For Short-Term Study Abroad Courses, Elizabeth Niehaus, Ashley Wegener

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

Based on survey data from over 400 faculty members who taught short-term study abroad courses, the purpose of this study was to identify the types of goals that faculty members have in teaching short-term study abroad courses and the relationship between faculty background characteristics (i.e., race, gender, discipline, and prior experience) and their teaching goals. By further understanding the goals that these faculty members have for their study abroad programs, we are better able to assess how these programs may or may not be meeting overall internationalization goals and then to use this information to assist faculty members and higher …

An Analysis Of African-American Faculty Experiences During The Tenure Process, Katrina M. Hubbard Nov 2018

An Analysis Of African-American Faculty Experiences During The Tenure Process, Katrina M. Hubbard

Dissertations

Abstract

How faculty allocate their time among research, teaching, and service, and the perceived quality of that work determines whether faculty obtain tenure or are released from the university (Bellas & Toutkoushian, 1999; Link, Swann, & Bozeman, 2008; Price & Cotten, 2006). Prior research indicated that African-American faculty comprised 4.5% of the faculty at high-activity research institutions and 3.5% of faculty at very-high-activity research institutions (The Chronicle of Higher Education Almanac 2016-2017, 2016).

The purpose of this study was to 1) document African-American faculty experiences during their tenure probationary period at PWI research institutions; 2) compare faculty experiences during the …

Acceptability Of Continuous Glucose Monitoring In Free-Living Healthy Individuals: Implications For The Use Of Wearable Biosensors In Diet And Physical Activity Research, Yue Liao, Susan Schembre

Kinesiology Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

Background: Wearable sensors have been increasingly used in behavioral research for real-time assessment and intervention purposes. The rapid advancement of biomedical technology typically used in clinical settings has made wearable sensors more accessible to a wider population. Yet the acceptability of this technology for nonclinical purposes has not been examined. Objective: The aim was to assess the acceptability of wearing a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) device among a sample of nondiabetic individuals, and to compare the acceptability of a CGM between a mobile diet tracking app (MyFitnessPal) and an accelerometer. Methods: A total of 30 nondiabetic adults went through a …

Excerpt:

As an academic institution, we strive to meet and exceed the expectations for graduate programs and laud our values and contributions to the academic community. At the same time, we must recognize, appreciate, and promote the unique non-academic values and accomplishments that our faculty team brings to the national defense, which is a priority of the Federal Government. In this respect, through our diverse and multi-faceted contributions, our faculty, as a whole, excel, not only along the metrics of civilian academic expectations, but also along the metrics of military requirements, and national priorities.

Developing Student Learning Outcome Metrics For Makerspaces: A Stem Pilot Course, Jaime Cantu, Martin K. Wallace

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

Preparing undergraduate engineering students with the competencies needed for future work environments is a central objective of college engineering programs. Recently, access to 3D printers and other digital fabrication technologies in academic makerspaces has increased opportunities for students to engage with people and tools essential for improving their engineering and design competencies, and has led researchers to explore how to increase and measure student learning in these spaces. The literature reveals interests in and the need for exploring how makerspaces affect undergraduate student learning outcomes, but few universities are actively engaged in this type of research. The University of Texas …

Straw Men Vs. Good Points: Understanding The Arguments For Inclusive Access Models, Michelle Reed, Amy Hofer, Billy Meinke, Bob Butterfield

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

As the instructional content industry shifts towards rentals and subscription models for textbooks, commercial publishers have refined their marketing pitches aimed at faculty -- sometimes by co-opting arguments in support OER, or by building hype around misleading statements and narrow benefits. This trend is especially evident when they make the case for "inclusive access" models by highlighting how students will have day-one access to the materials, which may seem impressive to those unfamiliar with the immediate access and broad permissions associated with OER. In this session we'll unpack the talking points and marketing strategies being pushed by commercial publishers in …

Access For Whom? Oer And Disability Services, Michelle Reed, Joshua Mitchell

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

A common misconception is that open educational resources (OER) are accessible for all students, in part, perhaps, because of the belief that digital content (as is typically the case with OER) is accessible by nature. As the situation at the University of California (UC), Berkeley, clearly demonstrated, however, this is not the case. UC Berkeley removed free online content from its website rather than adapt it to be accessible to those with disabilities following a U.S. Department of Justice investigation indicating online learning materials (i.e., YouTube videos, MOOCs, and iTunes U courses) were "not accessible to individuals with hearing, vision …

Adjunct Faculty: The Silent Majority, Erin M. Hillstead Walton Sep 2018

Adjunct Faculty: The Silent Majority, Erin M. Hillstead Walton

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The increase in use of part-time faculty, commonly referred to as “adjunct,” has shifted the academic workforce. Utilization of this populace has increased steadily over the past several years and is anticipated to continue this growth as colleges and universities seek cost-cutting measures in balancing their annual budgets. With this increase, however, comes unexpected consequences for the educators who fill these roles; often they are underpaid, overworked, and employed tenuously from term-to-term with no security in employment. This dissertation examines the adjunct faculty role; including what adjunct faculty need to be successful, versus what they have been provided to succeed …
