Nurse Faculty Perceptions Of Role Stress And Faculty-To-Faculty Incivility, Anne Kraft Kleinhesselink
Nurse Faculty Perceptions Of Role Stress And Faculty-To-Faculty Incivility, Anne Kraft Kleinhesselink
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between nurse faculty perceptions of role stress and faculty-to-faculty incivility using the stressor-emotion model of counterproductive work behaviors. A convenience sample of 79 nurse faculty from 39 undergraduate nursing programs in Iowa responded to an online survey. The survey consisted of two instruments: Workplace Incivility Civility Scale and Role Strain Scale. Findings revealed 76 participants perceived incivility as a problem and identified stress (n = 64) and demanding workloads (n = 54) as contributing factors. Pearson correlation results revealed a positive relationship between experienced incivility and nurse faculty perceptions of …
From Collaborative To Collegial Communities: Transitioning From Student Affairs Practitioner To Faculty, Michelle Lea Boettcher, Dena Kniess, Mimi Benjamin
From Collaborative To Collegial Communities: Transitioning From Student Affairs Practitioner To Faculty, Michelle Lea Boettcher, Dena Kniess, Mimi Benjamin
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
While student affairs (SA) practitioner expertise can inform a faculty member’s knowledge in the classroom, the transition into a tenure-track faculty role from student affairs administrative roles is complex. One of the differences new faculty members with SA administrator backgrounds experience is a change in the work community and shift from collaborative to collegial cultures. While studies have examined the transition of student affairs professionals from graduate programs to full time student affairs practitioner roles and graduate students into the professoriate, there is limited scholarship on the transitional experiences of student affairs practitioners moving into faculty positions. This qualitative study …

The Impact Of A Neuroeducation-Based Wellness Curriculum On Generation Z: Implementing Mind-Body Connection, Natalie M. Capiro, Alexandra L. Gleason, Stefanie Powers
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Twenty-first century culture has a significant impact on the cognitive-psychological development of modern-day students. Cultural factors that contribute to this include the excessive use of technology, increased focus on higher academic achievement, more parental involvement, a sedentary lifestyle, and fewer in-person social interactions. Concurrently, the curricular emphasis on physical and mental wellness has been weak leading to a rise of mental health issues amongst adolescent students.
Ample research indicates that the social and emotional bodies of the brain are developing and functioning differently because of cultural factors and societal trends. It is crucial for educators to take a deeper look …
Exploring Data Management: Identifying Signposts For Graduate Student Researchers, Judith E. Pasek, Jennifer Mayer
Exploring Data Management: Identifying Signposts For Graduate Student Researchers, Judith E. Pasek, Jennifer Mayer
University Libraries Publications
As graduate students embark on research projects, they often are not fully aware of what paths they should take or the obstacles they may encounter. Effectively managing research data is a skillset that needs to be honed along the way. Trail guides, including librarians, can establish instructional signposts for relevant data management concepts. To be effective, guides need to be familiar with the knowledge and skill gaps of the explorers. Surveys were conducted at two medium-sized universities to assess perceived importance and knowledge of 12 research data management competencies, with a goal of informing education planning. Results set the foundation …
Factors Predicting Faculty Members’ Intention To Teach Online In The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Fahad Obaid T. Alenezi
Factors Predicting Faculty Members’ Intention To Teach Online In The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Fahad Obaid T. Alenezi
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Despite the benefits online education provides, some faculty still consider online teaching less effective than traditional teaching and are not convinced they want to be involved in distance education (Blin & Munro, 2008; Bolliger & Wasilik, 2009; Chen & Chen, 2006). In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), the movement toward online education is slow and not promising due to several factors that may relate to faculty, learners, and institutions. The aim of this study was to investigate faculty members’ intentions to teach online at the University of Hail in KSA based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Additionally, …
Exploring Experiences Of Diverse Faculty With Diverse Students In Distance Education, Theresa West
Exploring Experiences Of Diverse Faculty With Diverse Students In Distance Education, Theresa West
Theses and Dissertations
This study aims to explore faculty’s experiences regarding teaching methods and student-teacher interaction. The interaction between the majority groups and diverse (minority) groups on the college and university campuses needs to be addressed in order for colleges to achieve the universal goal of education for all (Akombo, 2013). Such interactions can be achieved through a curriculum that fosters cultural perspectives within the college communities (Akombo, 2013). Due to the diversity and pluralism of educational environments, academic faculty must be able to discuss multiple cultural perspectives in the classroom (Akombo, 2013). For this reason, the Roger’s Diffusion of Innovation Theory will …

Does compassion itself benefit the healing process or does the activation of neurophysiological processes, from which the experience of compassion arises, trigger a cascade of physical and psychological changes that support health and well-being? Exploration of the neurological substrates of compassion reveals multiple healing pathways that can be activated by mind-body practices. Furthermore, these pathways affect physical health, emotion regulation, and how we perceive and relate to others.
Physiological states affect the capacity for empathy, compassion and understanding. A state of calm alertness based on sympatho-vagal balance may support such high-level prosocial functions. Evidence suggests that polyvagal-informed mind-body practices, particularly …

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence
This article discusses the value of developing mentoring programs for the empowerment of distance learning faculty. The paper describes various ways mentoring relationships enhance the development and teaching of distance learning courses. Distance learning faculty mentoring programs consist of a process where a more experienced faculty member assists a newer faculty member in developing a distance learning course. By creating and supporting distance learning faculty mentoring programs, higher education institutions can provide an efficient and valuable way for new distance learning faculty to gain empowerment as well as the skills and knowledge they need to teach online. This article asserts …

What Are We Teaching Abroad? Faculty Goals For Short-Term Study Abroad Courses, Elizabeth Niehaus, Ashley Wegener
Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications
Based on survey data from over 400 faculty members who taught short-term study abroad courses, the purpose of this study was to identify the types of goals that faculty members have in teaching short-term study abroad courses and the relationship between faculty background characteristics (i.e., race, gender, discipline, and prior experience) and their teaching goals. By further understanding the goals that these faculty members have for their study abroad programs, we are better able to assess how these programs may or may not be meeting overall internationalization goals and then to use this information to assist faculty members and higher …
An Analysis Of African-American Faculty Experiences During The Tenure Process, Katrina M. Hubbard
An Analysis Of African-American Faculty Experiences During The Tenure Process, Katrina M. Hubbard
Dissertations
Abstract
How faculty allocate their time among research, teaching, and service, and the perceived quality of that work determines whether faculty obtain tenure or are released from the university (Bellas & Toutkoushian, 1999; Link, Swann, & Bozeman, 2008; Price & Cotten, 2006). Prior research indicated that African-American faculty comprised 4.5% of the faculty at high-activity research institutions and 3.5% of faculty at very-high-activity research institutions (The Chronicle of Higher Education Almanac 2016-2017, 2016).
The purpose of this study was to 1) document African-American faculty experiences during their tenure probationary period at PWI research institutions; 2) compare faculty experiences during the …

An Examination Of Pedagogy In Middle School Science And Its Effect On Student Achievement, Brittany E. Kiser
An Examination Of Pedagogy In Middle School Science And Its Effect On Student Achievement, Brittany E. Kiser
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The development of policies ensuring regular examination of American students has been one approach to the mandate of accountability within the United States. While the face of assessment in education and the subsequent policies continue to evolve, the method to which classrooms approach preparing students for these examinations does so as well, though not in concert. Although some research has attempted to connect the two, particularly in the fields of mathematics and reading, a clear link between pedagogy in science classrooms and student achievement on standardized exams has not yet been established. Using qualitative and quantitative data gathered through surveys …

Academic makerspaces which are discipline-agnostic face the daunting task of trying to meet the needs of a humbling array of approaches to inquiry while maintaining a sustainable and safe environment for making. Establishing a set of policies that does not place structural barriers based on discipline demographics is a substantially separate process from establishing a sociocultural environment that earnestly facilitates "the imaginative work of interdisciplinarity" for faculty and student research within a simultaneous variety of departmental affiliations and backgrounds. This paper explores the multifaceted efforts undertaken at the University of Texas at Arlington FabLab to legitimately serve as wide a …

Workplace Bullying Policies, Higher Education And The First Amendment: Building Bridges Not Walls, Frances L. M. Smith, Crystal Rae Coel
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that higher education institutions should change their Faculty Codes of Conduct to reflect workplace bullying as a form of unacceptable harassment. The article first provides a definition for workplace bullying; secondly, it offers an analysis of how the First Amendment is not an absolute, especially in the workplace; thirdly, it examines the scant legislative and judicial attention that is given to this issue; and finally, an argument is made to show how colleges and universities are not providing clear enough policies and procedures to address workplace bullying. That argument focuses on results …

Leading In The Real World: Operationalizing A Power-Based Model Of Collaboration For Leadership Experiential Learning, Mariana J. Lebron, Filiz Tabak
Organization Management Journal
Using a power-based conceptual framework, we present a collaboration model to guide faculty and student affairs (SA) staff in working together to develop experiential learning assignments that help students apply leadership concepts to on-campus organizational problems. The PowerBased Student-Centered Collaboration Model (PSCM) consists of four stages through which faculty, SA staff, leadership course students, and student organization leaders operationalize their legitimate, coercive, expert, reward, and informational power in sharing resources for mutually beneficial student-centered learning experiences. Power structures provide coordinating mechanisms for information-exchange, decision-making, and role clarification in team-based collaborations. Using the PSCM, we developed a 6-week assignment Leading in …
