Community College Faculty Perceptions Of Open Educational Resources, Heather Ann Leavitt Jan 2023

Community College Faculty Perceptions Of Open Educational Resources, Heather Ann Leavitt

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined Open Educational Resources (OER) through a community college faculty perspective. Specifically, this study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of faculty motivations surrounding OER, faculty perceptions of OER’s influences on students, and pedagogical changes that faculty have made in response to OER. A qualitative research methodology was chosen, including semi-structured phenomenological interviews conducted with community college faculty members. The methodology was guided by activity theory. Faculty discussed their use of the 5 Rs (retain, reuse, revise, remix, redistribute) in practice, with revise being the most commonly used of the 5 Rs. Notably, the eight participants had mixed …

Transportation Curriculum With Culturally Responsive Teaching: Lessons Learned From Pre-Service Teachers And Future Transportation Workforce, Farah Naz, Troyee Saha, Kyung (Kate) Hyun

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

With K-12 students from diverse social and cultural backgrounds in the classroom today, it is crucial to develop a more inclusive and socially diverse curriculum, especially in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) topics. Transportation in particular is a topic that can relate to people's culture and can be a suitable medium to introduce diversity and inclusion in STEM fields. Culturally responsive teaching (CRT) is a technique that can help connect students' cultures, languages, and life experiences with their learning. Despite the known benefits of CRT, this strategy had not been adequately implemented in transportation education because of the limited …

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

Differential rewarding of work and experience has been a longtime feature of academic medicine, resulting in a series of academic disparities. These disparities have been collectively called a cultural or minority "tax," and, when considered beyond academic medicine, exist across all departments, colleges, and schools of institutions of higher learning-from health sciences to disciplines located on university campuses outside of medicine and health. A shared language can provide opportunities for those who champion this work to pool resources for larger impacts across the institution. This article aims to catalog the terms used across academic medicine disciplines to establish a common …

A Support Vector Machine Based Cure Rate Model For Interval Censored Data, Suvra Pal, Y Peng, S Barui, P Wang Aug 2022

A Support Vector Machine Based Cure Rate Model For Interval Censored Data, Suvra Pal, Y Peng, S Barui, P Wang

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

The mixture cure rate model is the most commonly used cure rate model in the literature. In the context of mixture cure rate model, the standard approach to model the effect of covariates on the cured or uncured probability is to use a logistic function. This readily implies that the boundary classifying the cured and uncured subjects is linear. In this paper, we propose a new mixture cure rate model based on interval censored data that uses the support vector machine (SVM) to model the effect of covariates on the uncured or the cured probability (i.e., on the incidence part …

A Laboratory Analysis Of Faunal Artifact Water Retention And Diagenesis, Gabriel Acevedo Montalvo, Alanna L. Lecher, April Watson

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

Submerged artifacts can be altered by water and made more fragile. Due to climate change, groundwater tables have been slowly rising submerging artifacts, altering their makeup, and changing the information that can be acquired from them. This investigation was performed on bone artifacts excavated in 2018 in the Southeastern Florida. After identification, bones were initially weighed, submerged in water for 48 hours, weighed, dried for 48 hours, and finally weighed. The results of statistical analyses indicate that some types of bone artifacts can absorb far greater quantities of water, which alter their weight, while others are less receptive.

Geological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

The COVID-19 pandemic provided education researchers with a natural experiment: an opportunity to investigate the impacts of a system-wide, involuntary move to online teaching and to assess the characteristics of individuals who adapted more readily. To capture the impacts in real time, our team recruited college-level geoscience instructors through the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) and American Geophysical Union (AGU) communities to participate in our study in the spring of 2020. Each weekday for three successive weeks, participants (n = 262) were asked to rate their experienced disruption in four domains: teaching, research, ability to communicate with their …

The Statistical Impact Of Faculty Mentoring Programs On Ninth Grade Student Achievement, Kevin Miller Jan 2022

The Statistical Impact Of Faculty Mentoring Programs On Ninth Grade Student Achievement, Kevin Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Students’ transition from middle to high school is challenging on many levels. Research has shown that students who perform poorly academically during their freshman year are more likely to graduate later or drop out of school altogether. By studying the literature surrounding the transition to high school, I will identify elements of effective transition programs (the totality of transition activities a district employs). This will be a convergent mixed method study, where I will use Social Support theory as a framework to examine the statistical significance of faculty mentoring programs impact on grade student achievement during the 2018-2019 school year. …

Comparing The Assessment Knowledge And Self-Efficacy Of Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics Faculty With Faculty From Other Disciplines, Karen Elizabeth Braley Jan 2022

Comparing The Assessment Knowledge And Self-Efficacy Of Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics Faculty With Faculty From Other Disciplines, Karen Elizabeth Braley

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Based on reported success and retention rates, there is a need to improve education in 2-year colleges for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors. Instructors’ assessment knowledge and self-efficacy have not been studied in 2-year or STEM higher education. The problem addressed in this study was that scholars do not know the extent of differences in assessment knowledge and assessment self-efficacy of STEM and non-STEM faculty that could be a contributing factor in student success rates. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine the extent of differences in STEM and non-STEM instructor assessment knowledge and self-efficacy as …

University Faculty Experiences: Workplace And Personal Stress, Stress Management, And Coping, Whitney Matthews Gass Dec 2021

University Faculty Experiences: Workplace And Personal Stress, Stress Management, And Coping, Whitney Matthews Gass

Theses and Dissertations

University faculty have work responsibilities and duties that encompass teaching, research (scholarship), and service and experience pressure from administrators, students, institutions, and disciplines. They also have expectations placed on them outside of their institutions by their families, peers, and communities. A gap exists in the literature regarding the workplace and personal stressors that university faculty experience including the coping strategies they employ to manage stress. This qualitative study utilized a general strain theory framework for guidance and modified informal conversational interviews with University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UA Little Rock) faculty. Interview questions were about the lived workplace and …
