Giving Faculty A Public Voice: Higher Education Must Incentivize Its Faculty To Publicly Disseminate Their Ideas, Grant K. Kimberlin
Giving Faculty A Public Voice: Higher Education Must Incentivize Its Faculty To Publicly Disseminate Their Ideas, Grant K. Kimberlin
The Liminal: Interdisciplinary Journal of Technology in Education
This paper considers higher education’s response to fake news to be a responsibility to more effectively communicate its ideas to the general public. Considering how the changing information landscape cultivates and interprets knowledge increasingly with less and less academic involvement, the issue of a post-truth world renders it more necessary than ever for higher education to be an active participant in public discourse. Further, this paper acknowledges the difficulties of doing so and advocates providing career incentives to faculty to take up this challenge. Current incentives reward self-referential discourse within academia, but given the changing times it is crucial for …

Understanding School Sabotage Among Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence From Diverse Populations, Rachel Voth Schrag, Tonya Edmond, Anne Nordberg
Social Work Faculty Publications & Presentations-Archive
Education is an important pathway to safety for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). Recent work documents tactics of school sabotage (behaviors aimed at sabotaging education) identified by school staff and advocates. However, more needs to be known about the perspectives of survivors. As part of a multiphasic study of 435 female community college students, 20 semi-structured interviews with IPV survivors were conducted. Identified tactics included disrupting child care, emotional abuse, and using manipulation to limit access to campus or resources. Identified impacts include preventing focus, diminished academic achievement, emotional or mental health challenges, and instilling a desire to overcome. …

Conceptualization Of Faculty Work Motivation: Overcoming The Impasse, Julie Nikolaeva Thompson
Conceptualization Of Faculty Work Motivation: Overcoming The Impasse, Julie Nikolaeva Thompson
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The work motivation literature is at an impasse. At the same time, changing economic and social conditions necessitate an ongoing transformation for how organizations motivate their workforce. Although changes in the nature of work have captured the attention of researchers, calls for more research to further develop work motivation theory have largely gone unnoticed. The scarcity of new theoretical research contributes to a lack of contextual understanding in work motivation. As such, organizational leaders continue to develop interventions based on the findings of potentially outdated work motivation theories. This may lead to diminished work motivation, productivity, and commitment, particularly for …

Figured Worlds: A Phenomenological Study Of Community College Faculty Leaders, Quinton Bemiller
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Despite the importance of community colleges in higher education, community college faculty are understudied. Although the community college has been defined as a teaching institution, its faculty also serve in non-teaching leadership roles. The purpose of this research study is to know (1) what the experiences of community college faculty in leadership roles are, (2) how their roles have changed over time, (3) what factors motivated faculty to accept non-teaching roles, and (4) how faculty have navigated the transition. Data were obtained from open-ended, semi-structured interviews using an Interpretive Phenomenological approach. Qualitative data were transcribed, coded, categorized, and then organized …

Changing Future Faculty's Conceptions Of Sotl, Darryl Reano, Stephanie Masta, Jon Harbor
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) programs provide graduate students across all disciplines with professional development that addresses a range of faculty responsibilities. The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) combines education research with the practice of teaching by implementing, disseminating, and applying research on educational practice and interventions. During a PFF program at a public university, we used a pre-post writing prompt to examine changes in future faculty’s conceptions of SoTL. Pre-workshop responses included misconceptions that indicated unfamiliarity with SoTL. Post-workshop responses had an increased emphasis on sharing outcomes from educational interventions. Only 8% of pre-workshop responses included all main elements …

M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
This study examined my effectiveness in supporting students’ use of the CSUSM Co-Curricular Model to deepen their understanding of and ability to articulate transferable skills between academics, employment, and extracurriculars, motivated by the following research question: (a) How can I, as a professional staff in student activities, support the students I serve to connect academic achievement and engagement in leadership development and student involvement? Data was collected through student self-evaluations, weekly one-on-one meetings, and larger group surveys with seven undergraduate students and three faculty members. My findings informed further implementation of the Co-Curricular Model in campus-wide programs and student evaluations.
Investing In Faculty To Improve Attendance At Collegiate Athletic Events, Nicholas Ocampo
Investing In Faculty To Improve Attendance At Collegiate Athletic Events, Nicholas Ocampo
Honors Projects
NCAA Division I institutions across the nation have consistently experienced declining attendance numbers at home athletic events over the past few years. Acknowledging this downward trend, this study explores how making an investment in faculty can positively influence attendance numbers and faculty involvement in athletics. In addition, studies have supported the notion that a high level of fan support and attendance at athletic events can be correlated to team success. Accordingly, Bowling Green State University (BGSU), a mid-major school that sponsors 18 NCAA Division I varsity athletic programs, has implemented a faculty, staff and retiree ticketing program in order to …

Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Of The Interplay Of Factors Affecting Burnout In Academic Medical Faculty., Tara Mckinley
Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Of The Interplay Of Factors Affecting Burnout In Academic Medical Faculty., Tara Mckinley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines burnout in academic medical faculty. The medical literature reports 30-45% of physicians are burned out and presents a long list of potential drivers of burnout. Interventions have shown limited success at the individual level and greater success at the organizational level, but large-scale interventions are typically time- and cost-intensive. Using the Job Demands-Resources Model (JD-R) and interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA), this study seeks to present the ways personal, interpersonal, and job characteristics are interpreted as demands or resources by faculty and how those demands and resources work together to drive or mitigate burnout. Over six chapters, this …
