Leadership Connection
Session presented on Monday, September 19, 2016:
The need for registered nurses in the United Sates continues to grow, yet the shortage of nursing faculty limits student enrollment. Funding reductions, faculty retirement and resignations, and increasing job competition from clinical sites have contributed to faculty's employment in nursing colleges. To add to the challenges, the role nursing faculty's role is becoming more complex with academic expectations in the areas of research, teaching, service and scholarly activities. Recognizing the variables associated with nursing faculty work-life is critical for changing strategies to gain and retain faculty. To achieve the goal of increased …

Leadership Connection
Session presented on Monday, September 19, 2016:
Nurse faculty may be unprepared to develop or evaluate curriculum, as this is not a part of usual practice (Anderson, 2009). Educators may be recruited from non-education roles, where they have excellent practice skills, but little or no experience developing curriculum or new courses. Education regarding curriculum received may be inconsistent. Faculty are often hired for expertise, rather than their educational preparation (Anderson, 2009; Hewitt, & Lewallen, 2010). Faculty entering academia can be practice experts, but novices at education. It is difficult to learn the role of curriculum evaluator without guidance, and new …

Incorporating Transparency Into An Online Respiratory Care Curriculum, Kristen Mchenry, Adrian Hoyal
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) framework has been shown to impact student academic success, improve retention rates, and increase reported course satisfaction. This instructional strategy has demonstrated effectiveness in traditional, online, and underrepresented student groups. This project aimed to revise one elective 7-week course in an online undergraduate degree advancement (DA) program in Respiratory Care to incorporate the TILT infrastructure and assess retention and satisfaction pre and post-implementation. Methods: The methodology can be characterized as evaluative, non-experimental research. An objectives-oriented approach was used to retrospectively evaluate the pedagogical change (TILT) and its degree of instructional impact on …

On The Lower Levels Of The Ivory Tower: What Color Collars Do Adjunct Faculty Wear?, Frederick Tucker
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Institutional reliance on tenure-line faculty reached a historic low after the Great Recession in 2009, remaining at approximately a third of all faculty through 2022. Postsecondary institutions have steadily increased their reliance on full-time adjunct faculty over the last two decades. Part-time adjuncts, meanwhile, were hired in great numbers before and during the Great Recession, as student enrollment increased, but have steadily declined since 2012, as college enrollment waned. Almost all evidence suggests that tenure expansion would benefit both the recipients of tenure and their students, but would come at a cost. There are few studies, however, that distinguish between …

Imprecise Clinical Assessments And Inaccurate Grades: Family Medicine Clerkship Director Perspectives, Arindam Sarkar, Joel J Heidelbaugh, Gage Hallbauer, Nital Appelbaum
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: As application to residency programs becomes increasingly competitive, educational leaders face growing student concern about imprecise clinical assessments and clerkship grades.
METHODS: As part of a large annual survey of family medicine clerkship directors (FMCDs), 10 questions were disseminated in May 2023 about perceived levels of imprecise assessments by faculty. We aimed to determine to what extent respondents felt their institution's evaluation system propagated inaccurate grading.
RESULTS: A total of 52% of 169 FMCDs responded to the survey. Of these, 7% of respondents were completely confident that their preceptors would give two students of identical competence the …

Kate Mehuron, professor of History and Philosophy and the Department of Women's and Gender Studies, and Dennis O'Grady, professor with the Departments of Communication, Media, and Theater Arts and Women's and Gender Studies, were both instrumental in the planning and implementation of the EMU LGBT Resource Center. Acting as a vital connection between faculty, students, and administration, Mehuron and O'Grady describe working with other faculty like Kathleen Russell to win support for the center. They also describe some of the pushback to the center amongst EMU faculty.

Faculty Feel It Too: The Emotions Of Teaching Through Service‐Learning, Carrie W. Lecrom, Lynn Pelco, Jill W. Lassiter
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
The authors used Coles’ (1993) framework of emotional satisfactions and hazards to examine the experiences of faculty members teaching service-learning classes for the first time. Seven faculty from two institutions completed monthly reflections and focus groups for one year. Qualitative analysis indicated that faculty experienced several of Coles’ emotional satisfactions and hazards, were prone to emotional contagion, and depended on colleague mentoring to navigate the experiences of using service-learning pedagogy for the first time.
Collegiality And Job Satisfaction Among Nurse Faculty, Kelsey Phillips
Collegiality And Job Satisfaction Among Nurse Faculty, Kelsey Phillips
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Nurse faculty turnover has been attributed to low levels of support, low wages, long work hours, uncertainty, and an unpleasant work environment. Leaders must find interventions that will impact the collegiality of nurse faculty, the perceived level of support from leadership, and in result retain their faculty. Purpose: Based on a literature review, this quality improvement project aims to determine if implementing a monthly catered lunch promotes collegiality and improves job satisfaction for nursing faculty in a community college in East Texas. Methods: To determine the impact of monthly catered lunches, a pre-and post-intervention tool [Perceived Organizational Support (POS)] will …

The COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath have precipitated a marked increase in mental health needs among college students. Lockdowns, the sudden shift to remote learning, and social distancing mandates have compounded existing challenges, highlighting a trend that has evolved over the past two decades. Despite heightened demand for mental health support, colleges struggle to meet these needs amid the emotional aftermath of COVID-19 effectively. Recognizing the pivotal role of higher education institutions in shaping future leaders and addressing and enhancing the mental well-being of the college community is imperative to foster an environment conducive to learning and healing. This paper …

Administrative Time Expectations For Residency Core Faculty: A Cera Study., Bryce A Ringwald, Stephen Auciello, Joseph Ginty, Melissa Jefferis, Stephen Stacey
Medical Education Articles
BACKGROUND: Academic family medicine (FM) physicians aim to balance competing needs of providing clinical care with nonclinical duties of program administration, formal education, and scholarly activity. FM residency is unique in its scope of practice, clinical settings, and training priorities, which may differ between university-based and community-based programs. In both types of programs, these competing needs are a source of faculty dissatisfaction and burnout. We performed this study to explore the allocation of nonclinical administrative full-time equivalents (FTE) for FM residency core faculty members.
RESULTS: Reported nonclinical administrative FTE time allocation is equivalent between university/medical school-based and community-based programs. The …

As of May 15, 2024, the MyNRMN platform, which provides mentoring, networking, and professional development tools, has facilitated more than 12,100 unique mentoring connections between faculty, students, and researchers in the biomedical domain.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the large-scale mentoring connections facilitated by our web-based platform between students (mentees) and faculty (mentors) across institutional …
From First Gen To Faculty: A Narrative Study Of First-Generation College Students Who Became Community College Faculty, Patrick Nevins
From First Gen To Faculty: A Narrative Study Of First-Generation College Students Who Became Community College Faculty, Patrick Nevins
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of first-generation community college faculty through narrative inquiry. Qualitative data were collected through semi-standard interviews with full-time community college faculty who were first-generation college students. In the first level of analysis, narrative accounts were created from the data, and in the second level of analysis, narrative accounts were compared for the identification of codes. Three themes emerged from data analysis: (a) being college bound from school age, (b) facing barriers to academic success as undergraduates, and (c) relating to students as faculty. The implications of the study are that first-generation …

The lack of women entering certain STEM fields impacts female representation in research faculty, teacher faculty, and leadership positions in higher education. Through a narrative inquiry methodology utilizing the theoretical paradigms of self-determination theory and relational autonomy, this study extended understanding of the factors that motivate persistence for women in certain STEM fields. While prior research focused on understanding the barriers to retention, this study sought to identify the factors motivating retention for women in certain STEM fields. The results of this study contribute to understanding the motivating factors that influence a woman’s persistence in STEM. The data gathered from …

Facilitator Ethnicity And Clinical Judgement Among Senior Minority Students Using Unfolding Case Studies, Rachael King
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Unfolding case studies are a technique used in advancing critical thinking in order for nursing students to enhance their clinical judgement. The format at which they are delivered can influence the degree of learning, understanding, applying, analyzing, and evaluating for students, especially senior minority nursing students. This quasi-experimental posttest survey between-groups study involved implementing unfolding case studies with a randomly selected minority or non-minority facilitator video recording for senior minority nursing students. After completing the case study, all participants were given a posttest survey, the Clinical Decision Making in Nursing Scale (Jenkins, 1983). The survey evaluates students’ self-perceived clinical judgement. …

Defining Faculty’S Role In Supporting Student Mental Health Needs In Higher Education, Erica B. Riba
Student Theses
The subject of mental health among college students has been prevalent for decades. Today, college students are facing more challenges to mental wellness than ever before. Faculty are often the first and only point of contact for many students. Faculty have a role to play in supporting student mental health, but that role has not been clearly defined. This study aims to bring clarity to some of these critical issues and offers a lens into this broad topic from faculty themselves. A mixed-methods design was used for this study. 889 people who have downloaded The Jed Foundation’s Faculty Guide to …
