Cognitive And Psychological Reactions Of The General Population Three Months After The 2011 Tohoku Earthquake And Tsunami, Yasushi Kyutoku, Ryoko Tada, Takahiko Umeyama, Kenji Harada, Senichiro Kikuchi, Eiju Watanabe, Angela Liegey-Dougall, Ippeita Dan

Psychology Faculty Publications - Archive

Background The largest earthquake on record in Japan (magnitude 9.0) occurred on March 11, 2011, and the subsequent tsunami devastated the Pacific coast of Northern Japan. These further triggered the Fukushima I nuclear power plant accidents. Such a hugely complex disaster inevitably has negative psychological effects on general populations as well as on the direct victims. While previous disaster studies enrolled descriptive approaches focusing on direct victims, the structure of the psychological adjustment process of people from the general population has remained uncertain. The current study attempted to establish a path model that sufficiently reflects the early psychological adaptation process …

Consumers’ Choice Of Dentists: How And Why People Choose Dental School Faculty Members As Their Oral Health Care Providers, M. Julie Kim, Peter C. Damiano, Jed Hand, Gerald E. Denehy, Deborah S. Cobb, Fang Qian

General Practice Publications

This study aimed to better understand how and why people choose dental school faculty members as their oral health care providers. Increasing financial constraints in U.S. dental schools have led their administrators to seek alternative funding sources, one of which can be revenues from dental school faculty practice. To effectively promote faculty practice, it is necessary to understand how and why one chooses a dental school faculty member as his or her oral health care provider. A survey of 1,150 dental school faculty practice patients who recently chose their dentist was conducted, and 221 responded. The information sources these respondents …

Biophysical Assessment Of Single Cell Toxicity: Diesel Exhaust Particle-Treated Human Aortic Endothelial Cells, Kytai Truong Nguyen, Hao Xu, Yangzhe Wu, Anhong Zhou, Tian Yu, Timothy A. Gilbertson Jan 2012

Biophysical Assessment Of Single Cell Toxicity: Diesel Exhaust Particle-Treated Human Aortic Endothelial Cells, Kytai Truong Nguyen, Hao Xu, Yangzhe Wu, Anhong Zhou, Tian Yu, Timothy A. Gilbertson

Bioengineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEPs), a major source of traffic-related air pollution, has become a serious health concern due to its adverse influences on human health including cardiovascular and respiratory disorders. To elucidate the relationship between biophysical properties (cell topography, cytoskeleton organizations, and cell mechanics) and functions of endothelial cells exposed to DEPs, atomic force microscope (AFM) was applied to analyze the toxic effects of DEPs on a model cell line from human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs). Fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry were also applied to further explore DEP-induced cytotoxicity in HAECs. Results revealed that DEPs could negatively impair …

Racial Battle Fatigue, Role Strain, And African-American Faculty At Public Community Colleges, Tamara N. Stevenson Jan 2012

Racial Battle Fatigue, Role Strain, And African-American Faculty At Public Community Colleges, Tamara N. Stevenson

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

African Americans remain disproportionately underrepresented in the faculty ranks at institutions of higher education in the United States. The faculty role is critical to the quality and exchange of teaching and learning, particularly at public community colleges. The extant literature documents how “chilly” campus climates and racially charged encounters can be harmful to African-American faculty. Moreover, along with the traditional responsibilities and demands of the faculty role, African-American faculty members contend with racism, discrimination, and an anti-Black sentiment in academia as a microcosm of society, likely resulting in race-related role strain. Overall, this exploratory study sought to understand the nature …

Explanatory Style And Innovativeness: Use Of Web 2.0 Tools In Education, Michelle Rogers-Estable Jan 2012

Explanatory Style And Innovativeness: Use Of Web 2.0 Tools In Education, Michelle Rogers-Estable

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

People may have either a more positive or more negative explanatory style, and their explanatory style consequently leads to behavior choices. Explanatory style may be a primary intrinsic factor underlying optimistic or pessimistic attitudes that directly affect technology adoption by faculty. Research has already found some links among optimism, positive attitudes, and technology adoption. This dissertation therefore analyzed the relationship between explanatory style and individual innovativeness among higher education faculty as measured by the use of emerging Web 2.0 technologies in higher education with the intent to better understand how optimism and pessimism affect choices to use technology in education. …

Re-Envisioning Nurse Faculty Mentoring: Developmental Network Connections That Count, Margaret Babb Kennedy Jan 2012

Re-Envisioning Nurse Faculty Mentoring: Developmental Network Connections That Count, Margaret Babb Kennedy

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Fears surrounding the nurse faculty shortage in the United States have prompted significant emphasis on supporting novice educators and those in transition to new roles within academia through mentoring. Yet a continued focus on traditionally held notions of a hierarchical dyad limits possibilities for facilitating rich, diverse, mentoring relationships. A novel theoretical framework incorporating social network perspective is used to conceptualize the dynamic, multilevel reality of mentoring in examination of nurse faculty mentoring. This dissertation presents the results of an integrative review and qualitative study that explore evidence and experiences of nurse faculty mentoring using the unique developmental network lens, …

Exploring The Two-Year College Faculty Work Experience: The Active Job, The Evolving Institution And The Changing Effort-Reward Bargain, Jacobs Wayne Hammond Jan 2012

Exploring The Two-Year College Faculty Work Experience: The Active Job, The Evolving Institution And The Changing Effort-Reward Bargain, Jacobs Wayne Hammond

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

While significant research describes the occupational experiences of four-year college and university faculty, two-year college faculty have received little attention from scholars. This study enters the existing void. Fourteen two-year college faculty members from a variety of institutions in Minnesota were interviewed utilizing a semi-structured depth interview technique. Questions were derived from sociological and interdisciplinary literature pertaining to the higher education faculty experience. Two-year college faculty were found to hold active jobs, work in evolving institutions and face a decreasing effort-reward bargain. Faculty were also found to be susceptible to experiencing role strain, stress derived from group-decision making processes and …

Symposium Introduction: Humanism Goes To Law School, Marjorie A. Silver

Touro Law Review

By now, the knowledge that law students experience more than their fair share of distress is old news. The studies about law student (and lawyer) unhappiness have been widely discussed in both academic literature and trade publications. Less well known, however, are the increasing number of programs that law schools, and individuals within those schools, have implemented to counter that distress, and to help students develop a positive professional identity, both as students and as the lawyers they are about to become.

Reproductive Rights Approach To Reproductive Health In Developing Countries, Vijayan K. Pillai, Rashmi Gupta

Social Work Faculty Publications & Presentations-Archive

Research on reproductive health in developing countries focuses mostly on the role of economic development on various components of reproductive health. Cross-sectional and empirical research studies in particular on the effects of non-economic factors such as reproductive rights remain few and far between. Objective: This study investigates the influence of two components of an empowerment strategy, gender equality, and reproductive rights on women’s reproductive health in developing countries. The empowerment strategy for improving reproductive health is theoretically situated on a number of background factors such as economic and social development. Design: Cross-national socioeconomic and demographic data from a number of …
