Review In Motion: Multi-Year Electronic Resources Review At Uta Libraries, Peter Zhang, Ashley Zmau

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

With a flat budget and ever increasing inflation for serials, UTA Libraries chose to embark on a multi-year electronic resources review process. Targeting low hanging fruits, the first step was to review subscription journals included in aggregator databases. This initial review process was also a relatively straightforward step to help new liaisons in a newly created Outreach & Scholarship department to get their "feet wet"with collection development. As liaisons become more acclimated, the second step in the following year is to review all single e-journal subscriptions, distributed amongst all liaisons. Guidelines and metrics are created to facilitate the review in …

Public Health Impact Of Strain Specific Immunity To Borrelia Burgdorferi, Camilo E. Khatchikian, Robert B. Nadelman, John Nowakowski, Ira Schwartz, Michael Z. Levy, Dustin Brisson, Gary P. Wormser

NYMC Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, is the most common tick-borne infection in the United States. Although humans can be infected by at least 16 different strains of B. burgdorferi, the overwhelming majority of infections are due to only four strains. It was recently demonstrated that patients who are treated for early Lyme disease develop immunity to the specific strain of B. burgdorferi that caused their infection. The aim of this study is to estimate the reduction in cases of Lyme disease in the United States that may occur as a result of type specific immunity. METHODS: The analysis …

Scholarly output is no longer limited to print format. For academia, the adoption of new technology is integral to all aspects of the university experience, from recruitment, to class projects, to the archiving of ETDs and other scholarly work. For universities to thrive, they must adopt and stretch the boundaries of technology. Along with such adoption comes the growing pains of cataloging and preservation of several new ETD formats. What kind of metadata can be created to best explain the newest projects? What platforms exist that will handle the needs of documenting these new technologies? Presented here are some of …

Continuum-Scale Investigation Of Evaporation From Bare Soil Under Different Boundary And Initial Conditions: An Evaluation Of Nonequilibrium Phase Change, Andrew C. Trautz, Kathleen M. Smits, Abdullah Cihan

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Evaporation and condensation in bare soils govern water and energy fluxes between the land and atmosphere. Phase change between liquid water and water vapor is commonly evaluated in soil hydrology using an assumption of instantaneous phase change (i.e., chemical equilibrium). Past experimental studies have shown that finite volatilization and condensation times can be observed under certain environmental conditions, thereby questioning the validity of this assumption. A comparison between equilibrium and nonequilibrium phase change modeling approaches showed that the latter is able to provide better estimates of evaporation, justifying the need for more research on this topic. Several formulations based on …

BACKGROUND: We previously reported a significant decrease in hospital-acquired (HA) Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) coincident with the introduction of pulsed xenon ultraviolet light for room disinfection (UVD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate CDI cases in greater detail to understand the effect of UVD. METHODS: CDI rates (HA and community acquired [CA]), CDI patient length of stay, room occupancy, and number of days between a CDI case in a room and an HA CDI case in the same room were studied for the first year of UVD compared with the 1-year period pre-UVD. RESULTS: Compared with pre-UVD, during …

Host Switching Vs. Host Sharing In Overlapping Sylvatic Trypanosoma Cruzi Transmission Cycles, Christopher Kribs, Christopher Mitchell Sep 2015

Host Switching Vs. Host Sharing In Overlapping Sylvatic Trypanosoma Cruzi Transmission Cycles, Christopher Kribs, Christopher Mitchell

Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive

The principle of competitive exclusion is well established for multiple populations competing for the same resource, and simple models for multistrain infection exhibit it as well when cross-immunity precludes coinfections. However, multiple hosts provide niches for different pathogens to occupy simultaneously. This is the case for the vector-borne parasite Trypanosoma cruzi in overlapping sylvatic transmission cycles in the Americas, where it is enzootic. This study uses cycles in the USA involving two different hosts but the same vector species as a context for the study of the mechanisms behind the communication between the two cycles. Vectors dispersing in search of …

UT Arlington Libraries released a new Drupal website in January 2015, only eighteen months after several members of our web team were still learning basic tools such as CSS! Discussion will include planning, use of SharePoint as a tracking tool and documentation repository, and in-house training of the web team and content editors on the Drupal product. To build this data-driven website, we used CrazyEgg on our prior site and Google Analytics to determine our most used information to migrate to the new site. Hear about how we navigated challenges to a successful deployment without losing our minds.

Conventional reconstruction of diffuse optical tomography (DOT) is based on the Tikhonov regularization and the white Gaussian noise assumption. Consequently, the reconstructed DOT images usually have a low spatial resolution. In this work, we have derived a novel quantification method for noise variance based on the linear Rytov approximation of the photon diffusion equation. Specifically, we have implemented this quantification of noise variance to normalize the measurement signals from all source-detector channels along with sparsity regularization to provide high-quality DOT images. Multiple experiments from computer simulations and laboratory phantoms were performed to validate and support the newly developed algorithm. The …

Multiregional Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Reveals Globally Symmetrical And Frequency-Specific Patterns Of Superficial Interference, Yujin Zhang, Fulun Tan, Xu Xu, Lian Duan, Hanli Liu, Fenghua Tian, Chao-Zhe Zhu

Bioengineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Linear regression with short source-detector separation channels (S-channels) as references is an efficient way to overcome significant physiological interference from the superficial layer for functional nearinfrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). However, the co-located configuration of Schannels and long source-detector separation channels (L-channels) is difficult to achieve in practice. In this study, we recorded superficial interference with S-channels in multiple scalp regions. We found that superficial interference has overall frequency-specific and globally symmetrical patterns. The performance of linear regression is also dependent on these patterns, indicating the possibility of simplifying the Schannel configurations for multiregional fNIRS imaging.

Evaporation is directly influenced by the interactions between the atmosphere, land surface and soil subsurface. This work aims to experimentally study evaporation under various surface boundary conditions to improve our current understanding and characterization of this multiphase phenomenon as well as to validate numerical heat and mass transfer theories that couple Navier-Stokes flow in the atmosphere and Darcian flow in the porous media. Experimental data were collected using a unique soil tank apparatus interfaced with a small climate controlled wind tunnel. The experimental apparatus was instrumented with a suite of state of the art sensor technologies for the continuous and …

Erythema Migrans, Robert B. Nadelman Jun 2015

Erythema Migrans, Robert B. Nadelman

NYMC Faculty Publications

Erythema migrans (EM) is the most common objective manifestation of Borrelia burgdorferi infection. Systemic symptoms are usually present. Most patients do not recall a preceding tick bite. Despite a characteristic appearance, EM is not pathognomonic for Lyme disease and must be distinguished from other similar appearing skin lesions. EM is a clinical diagnosis; serologic and PCR assays are unnecessary. Leukopenia and thrombocytopenia are indicative of either an alternative diagnosis, or coinfection with another tick-borne pathogen. When EM is promptly treated with appropriate antimicrobial agents, the prognosis is excellent. Persons in endemic areas should take measures to prevent tick bites.
