Objective: This study reports on the operationalization and testing of the newly developed Relationship Quality (RQ) scale, designed to assess an individual’s perception of his or her RQ in their current partnership. Methods: Data were generated through extended sampling from an original U.K.-based research project, Enduring Love? Couple relationships in the 21st century. This mixed methods study was designed to investigate how couples experience, understand, and sustain their long-term relationships. This article utilizes the cross-sectional, community sample (N = 8,132) from this combined data set, drawn primarily from the United Kingdom, United States, and Australia. A two-part approach to scale …

Feminist Fissures: Navigating Conflict In Mentoring Relationships, Kathryn Gindlesparger, Holly Ryan Jan 2016

Feminist Fissures: Navigating Conflict In Mentoring Relationships, Kathryn Gindlesparger, Holly Ryan

College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers

Scholarship in rhetoric and composition has richly addressed the role of feminist mentoring and how a feminist perspective of mentoring might work across various mentoring configurations. However, there is little feminist rhetorical scholarship that discusses the transition from a graduate mentoring group to a faculty mentoring group. This case study examines how one group navigated the change from graduate mentors to faculty mentors, revealing how unarticulated conflict lead to the end of the relationships. In unpacking this narrative, this article argues that feminist mentoring scholarship has not done enough to openly discuss the role of conflict in mentoring. Lacking scholarship …

Psychological Well-Being Of Older Chinese-American Grandparents Caring For Grandchildren, Fengyan Tang, Ling Xu, Iris Chi, Xinqi Dong

Social Work Faculty Publications & Presentations-Archive

The rapid increase in grandparents caring for grandchildren has received growing attention, but little research has focused on Chinese-American grandparents and their caregiving experiences. Drawing on cross-sectional data from the Population Study of Chinese Elderly—a communityengaged, epidemiological study of Chinese-American adults aged 60 and older, the relationships between caregiving experiences and psychological well-being were examined. Of 2,365 older adults who answered the question about grandparent caregiving, 818 (35%) were designated as caregivers, spending an average of 12 hours a week on childcare. About one in five caregivers reported caregiving burden, pressure, or negative health effect of caregiving. Caregivers had better …

The Lived Experience Of Black Nurse Faculty In Predominately White Schools Of Nursing, Lisa Whitfield-Harris Jan 2016

The Lived Experience Of Black Nurse Faculty In Predominately White Schools Of Nursing, Lisa Whitfield-Harris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diversity in the United States (US) has been increasing at a rapid rate. Concerns regarding the healthcare outcomes of minority patients and the success rates of minority students have been documented during the past decade. In addition, recruitment and attrition rates of minority nurse faculty increased over this same period. While discrimination, little opportunity for tenure and promotion, and isolation have been issues noted in previous literature regarding Black faculty, research on these topics is lacking. Therefore, a hermeneutic phenomenology study was conducted to explore the meaning of the lived experience of Black nurse faculty employed in predominately White schools …

Champions: The Cornerstone Of Pltl Programs, A.E. Dreyfuss

Publications and Research

What drives people to keep working with Peer-Led Team Learning? Such people could be called “champions,” because no matter what the odds, they keep struggling to ensure the continuity of their campus program, promoting expected and unexpected outcomes. Champions are the cornerstone of PLTL programs, because without champions Peer-Led Team Learning would not continue to work

Chinese International Students' And Faculty Members' Views Of Plagiarism In Higher Education, Alan Edward Grigg Jan 2016

Chinese International Students' And Faculty Members' Views Of Plagiarism In Higher Education, Alan Edward Grigg

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

As the enrollment of Chinese international students (CIS) increased at a private institution in the Midwest, so did suspected cases of plagiarism. This study addressed the problem of how faculty members grappled with CIS' interpretation and application of Western-based views of plagiarism. The purpose of the study was to identify similarities and differences in the views of these 2 groups. Social cognitive theory, intercultural adaptation theory, and neutralization theory framed this qualitative case study. The research questions focused on how these particular CIS interpreted and applied the Western concept of plagiarism to assignments and exams, the impact of classroom practices …

The Acute Relationships Between Affect, Physical Feeling States, And Physical Activity In Daily Life: A Review Of Current Evidence, Yue Liao, Eleanor T. Shonkoff, Genevieve F. Dunton Dec 2015

The Acute Relationships Between Affect, Physical Feeling States, And Physical Activity In Daily Life: A Review Of Current Evidence, Yue Liao, Eleanor T. Shonkoff, Genevieve F. Dunton

Kinesiology Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

Until recently, most studies investigating the acute relationships between affective and physical feeling states and physical activity were conducted in controlled laboratory settings, whose results might not translate well to everyday life. This review was among the first attempts to synthesize current evidence on the acute (e.g., within a few hours) relationships between affective and physical feeling states and physical activity from studies conducted in free-living, naturalistic settings in non-clinical populations. A systematic literature search yielded 14 eligible studies for review. Six studies tested the relationship between affective states and subsequent physical activity; findings from these studies suggest that positive …

Borrelia Burgdorferi Pathogenesis And The Immune Response, Mary Petzke, Ira Schwartz Dec 2015

Borrelia Burgdorferi Pathogenesis And The Immune Response, Mary Petzke, Ira Schwartz

NYMC Faculty Publications

Borrelia burgdorferi is the tick-borne etiologic agent of Lyme disease. The spirochete must negotiate numerous barriers in order to establish a disseminated infection in a mammalian host. These barriers include migration from the feeding tick midgut to the salivary glands, deposition in skin, manipulation or evasion of the localized host immune response, adhesion to and extravasation through an endothelial barrier, hematogenous dissemination, and establishment of infection in distal tissue sites. Borrelia burgdorferi proteins that mediate many of these processes and the nature of the host response to infection are described.

Buildout Population Projections, Chelsea Irby Dec 2015

Buildout Population Projections, Chelsea Irby

Planning Masters Professional Reports - Archive

Buildout population projections are used by various municipalities and entities to project the ultimate population, or carrying capacity, of a specific area. There are many methods used to calculate buildout population. It is generally done by identifying the highest allowed uses in the vacant areas, based on the future land use plan, and calculating the maximum number of households and population. The maximum population in the vacant areas is then added to the existing population in that area to get the buildout population. Municipalities generally use these type of projections in comprehensive plans to set a vision for the future …
