This study investigates the use of two spectroscopic techniques, auto-fluorescence lifetime measurement (AFLM) and light reflectance spectroscopy (LRS), for detecting invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) in human ex vivo breast specimens. AFLM used excitation at 447 nm with multiple emission wavelengths (532, 562, 632, and 644 nm), at which autofluorescence lifetimes and their weight factors were analyzed using a double exponent model. LRS measured reflectance spectra in the range of 500-840 nm and analyzed the spectral slopes empirically at several distinct spectral regions. Our preliminary results based on 93 measured locations (i.e., 34 IDC, 31 benign fibrous, 28 adipose) from 6 …

There is a lack of emphasis in the planning world, both academically and in the field, on preventing crime. Defensible Space and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) has been the two main approaches taken by planners and criminal justice officials that is design-based and that has brought some level of collaboration between the two professions. This study analyzes the built environment of select crime hotspots in the Bishop Arts District Neighborhood from a design-based crime prevention perspective in order to draw correlations between high crime areas and elements of design-based theories. Using GIS software, crime map is plotted to …

Introduction: Mobile phones are ubiquitous and easy to use, and thus have the capacity to collect real-time data from large numbers of people. Research tested the feasibility and validity of an Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) self-report protocol using electronic surveys on mobile phones to assess adults’ physical activity and sedentary behaviors. Methods: Adults (N = 110; 73% female, 30% Hispanic, 62% overweight/obese) completed a 4-day signal-contingent EMA protocol (Saturday–Tuesday) with eight surveys randomly spaced throughout each day. EMA items assessed current activity (e.g., Watching TV/Movies, Reading/Computer, Physical Activity/Exercise). EMA responses were time-matched to minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and …

Overcoming Barriers: How Community College Faculty Successfully Overcome Barriers To Participation In Distance Education, Matthew Meyer
Overcoming Barriers: How Community College Faculty Successfully Overcome Barriers To Participation In Distance Education, Matthew Meyer
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
To determine the primary barriers encountered by community college faculty in participating in distance education, community college faculty and administrators from community colleges in North Carolina and Virginia were surveyed using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Two separate online surveys were provided to faculty and distance education administrators (including chief academic officers) that included demographic questions and barrier assessment questions for both groups. Follow-up interviews were conducted among faculty and administrators at colleges that self-reported having successful or poorly performing distance education programs. To further frame the attributes of faculty participators and non-participators in distance education, the diffusion of innovations …
The Lived Experiences Of Faculty Who Use Instructional Technology: A Phenomenological Study, Heath V. Tuttle
The Lived Experiences Of Faculty Who Use Instructional Technology: A Phenomenological Study, Heath V. Tuttle
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This qualitative phenomenological study was designed to gain an in-depth understanding of the lived experiences of university faculty who adopt technology for teaching and learning purposes and to determine if adoption affected the way a person taught, worked, and lived. A review of the literature found a gap in the understanding of the lived experiences of faculty who teach with technology, and this study was designed to help fill that gap.
Using a purposeful sampling method with a reputational technique, I targeted 20 faculty members who used technology to teach. The phenomenological method provided an understanding of their experiences as …

Copyright And The Perioperative Nurse, Helen Hough, Kristen Priddy
Copyright And The Perioperative Nurse, Helen Hough, Kristen Priddy
UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive
Every time a perioperative nurse gives a patient printed instructions to take home, that nurse is involved with issues related to copyright. When a person makes photocopies to share with others, downloads a file or graphic to use at work, provides handouts at an in-service or a class, or writes for publication, the person is involved with copyright regulations. A basic understanding of why copyright exists, what it involves, and how it impacts the health care provider is important. Knowledge of the opportunities related to copyright fair use allows some flexibility. Failure to abide by copyright regulations can financially impact …

As health care providers, we want to be able to provide the best care to our patients. Occasionally we observe that some caring process may not be the most effective it could or should be. Some of these processes are direct patient interactions, disease prevention, and intervention, but the idea of best care can be related to the timeliness and cost of that care. Best care is based on evidence indicating that the care provided is the best that can be done and that it is done at the most appropriate level. This evidence is derived through research and expert …

At many workplaces there is one person known for sharing interesting bits of information by forwarding e-mails or bringing in newspaper and Internet articles. While cartoons and jokes may be amusing, sometimes the information is composed of doubtful facts, including terrible crime threats, political scandals, and unusual medical treatments. The same stories that might have been kindly dismissed when discussed in the break room are somehow thought to be more substantial and reliable because they are in print. Casually judging the value of these stories is easy when the outcome is unimportant. The evaluation of information is more difficult when …

Exploring new worlds and creative approaches to delivering continuing education is an adventure worth taking! The basic requirement of content that advances the skills and abilities of the registered nurse (RN) can be met in a number of ways. What is clear though is that continuing education is most effective when the experience fully engages learners, expands their skills and knowledge, provides expert information and opportunity for networking, and entices them to learn more. This article describes how a virtual-world learning environment (Second Life, or SL) was used as a venue for an interactive and creative continuing education activity and …

Advising Style Perceptions And Preferences Of Students And Advisors., Gladys Patricia Brown Jordan
Advising Style Perceptions And Preferences Of Students And Advisors., Gladys Patricia Brown Jordan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The best style of advising to offer students has been questioned over and over. The literature review revealed uncertainty related to national surveys of advisors and students and encouraged smaller institutional reviews. The Academic Advising Inventory (Winston and Sandor, 1984b), was administered to a proportionate to size random sample of advisors (faculty and professional) and then to the advisees of the advisors who responded to the survey. Variables of interest for advisors included age, gender, type (faculty or professional), and college. Variables of interest for students included gender, ethnicity, age, classification, generational status, and GPA. A standard multiple regression, one-way …

Public Administration Capstone Reports - Archive
The City of Kennedale has tasked our project team with developing a compensation plan that will act as a compliment to the organizational philosophies. Additionally through fact-finding research we will provide the sentiments regarding the organization and the compensation gathered by way of an employee survey and an executive team focus group. Lastly we perform a market comparative analysis to provide a comprehensive scope of the information needed to develop a compensation structure that is responsive to the market.
