Psychology Faculty Publications - Archive
In the United States alone, the annual cost associated with the diagnosis and care of musculoskeletal trauma amounts to tens of billions of dollars [Occupational Musculoskeletal Disorders: Function, Outcomes and Evidence. Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, Philadelphia]. Moreover, these costs are continuing to increase at an alarming rate. In fact, in the United States today, occupational musculoskeletal disorders are the leading causes of work disability. Changes in health care policy and demand for improved allocation of health care resources by the Federal government have also recently placed greater pressure on health care professionals to provide the most cost-effective treatment for these …

The Road To Faculty-Librarian Collaboration, Brad Matthies
Scholarship and Professional Work
It is critical that citizens of a democratic society have a solid grounding in information literacy Several conceptions and definitions of information literacy have become prevalent. For example, one conception defines information literacy in terms of a set of competencies that an informed citizen of an information society ought to possess to participate intelligently and skills. The author believes that an effective way to achieve this goal is for faculty and librarians to collaborate on ways to teach these skills to students. As proof of the efficacy of faculty-librarian collaboration the author presents an example that is based on his …

Evaluation Of The Cooperative Education And Internships Program At Prince George’S Community College, Diana Y. Doman Wilkins
Evaluation Of The Cooperative Education And Internships Program At Prince George’S Community College, Diana Y. Doman Wilkins
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The Cooperative Education and Internships program is charged with placing students in positions that will allow them to gain experience in a work environment related to their major area of study. Job development specialists receive no type of written feedback from the employer, the faculty advisor, or the student on whether or not the placement was successful. The problem is that Cooperative Education and Internships has not demonstrated its effectiveness; therefore, there is reluctance from students, faculty advisors, and job development specialists to continue participating and/or promoting the program.
The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of …

On Collegiality, Michael L. Seigel
On Collegiality, Michael L. Seigel
UF Law Faculty Publications
The problem of collegiality in academia is like a crazy aunt in the family: ever present, whispered about in hallways, but rarely acknowledged directly. My goal in this article has been to initiate the demise of this pattern of unhappy toleration. The toleration stems, in large part, from an apparently widespread fear that attempts to control colleagues' uncollegial conduct will result in an unacceptable diminution of academic freedom. Although these concerns are legitimate, I have sought to prove that, if appropriate care is taken, academic freedom may flourish at the same time that a norm of basic collegiality is enforced. …

Factors Influencing Academics' Usage Of Electronic Journals, Margaret Krikorian
Factors Influencing Academics' Usage Of Electronic Journals, Margaret Krikorian
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Through a survey of academics at Edith Cowan University, Australia, this study explored their usage of and attitudes towards academic electronic journals (EJs). The data provided insights into the way academics were using EJs at the time of the study and their thoughts on how they will use them in the future. The emergence of academics publishing their work in EJs is a fairly recent phenomenon compared to the established tradition of publishing in paper-based journals. Many publishers have also begun to replace paper journals with electronic ones and many librarians have begun incorporating EJs into their resource collections. Librarians …

The Development Of A Community Of Practice For The Academic Senate At Contra Costa College With Plans For Evaluation, Saul P. Jones
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Currently the Academic Senate at Contra Costa College does not have a recognized formal mechanism to preserve its knowledge capital, or cultivate the growth of prospective and current Academic Senate members. The purpose of the project was to develop a community of practice for the Academic Senate at Contra Costa College along with plans for its evaluation. The community of practice was designed to support faculty in sharing and evolving their governance practices and would allow faculty to virtually visit and consult one another through the use of a link in the Academic Senate’s World Wide Web page. The community …

The Development Of A Human Resources Plan At The Alabama School Of Fine Arts, April Lufkin Miller
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was designed to develop a human resources plan for the Alabama School of Fine Arts. Presently, the school does not have a unified plan which addresses the major areas of human resources: hiring, evaluation and retention. While the school did have some procedures in place dealing with the wide topic of human resources, it was not regarded as a particularly significant field.
In the past year ASFA has become an independent school system. This new status presents the opportunity to create and implement policies and procedures which will enable the school to select, rate and reward its …
The Development And Validation Of A Mentoring Program For The Cook County School District, Torrance D. Choates
The Development And Validation Of A Mentoring Program For The Cook County School District, Torrance D. Choates
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The problem under investigation was the current mentoring program in the Cook County School District in Georgia. The mentoring program was not providing support and guidance to student teachers, beginning teachers, and colleagues in establishing peer-coaching relationships. At present, mentorship is left up to each school-based administrator. The concern was that there was not enough consistency in relation to a true systemwide mentoring program in the Cook County School District. Within the project, 7 questions were addressed: (a) status of mentor and teacher induction program within Cook County School District, (b) attrition rates for new teachers in the district, (c) …
