Culturally Appropriate Information, Education And Communication Strategies For Improving Adolescent Reproductive Health In Cusco, Peru, Marco Florez-Arestegui Cornejo, Rosalinda Barreto Silva
Reproductive Health
The project Culturally Appropriate Information, Education and Communication Strategies for Improving Adolescent Reproductive Health in Cusco, Peru was designed in response to the evident lack of information and education on adolescent reproductive health in the country and, in particular, in the rural areas of the department of Cusco. Research revealed that a great need for sexual and reproductive health information still exists among indigenous adolescents in the rural areas of the region and that sexual education programs have to be sustainable. This report recommends that the Ministry of Education train more teachers in sexual and reproductive health topics, taking into …

A Process Approach To The Teaching Of Literature In An Efl Context, Stefan Colibaba
A Process Approach To The Teaching Of Literature In An Efl Context, Stefan Colibaba
MA TESOL Collection
The paper takes a process approach to exploring ways in which the study of literature in the foreign language classroom can be made into a significant experience for both learners and teacher.
A rationale for the integration of cultural, linguistic, and personal growth models in teaching literature is developed with the avowed aim of facilitating learners’ engagement with, interpretation of, and response to the literary text. Complementary to that, coherent sets of classroom activities designed around the sample literary texts provide the practical component of the paper. Besides relevant practice in the four skills, these sets of activities offer opportunities …

"Some Of Us Are Learning Spanish And Some Of Us Are Learning English": A Comparison Of Second Language Programs In Texas, Lore Carrera-Carrillo
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Dual language education programs are gaining momentum throughout the United States as exemplary means of educating both language minority and language majority students. There is considerable evidence that learning through the native language has many advantages for language minority students. Specifically, it allows them to gain important content knowledge in their native language that will make the English they encounter more comprehensible as they enhance their overall cognitive and social development. Additionally, dual language education facilitates the development of both basic and advanced literacy in two languages for language majority students; Research results demonstrate that dual language education programs can …

Reproductive Health
Globally, almost 515,000 women die every year from maternal causes related to pregnancy or childbirth. Most research focuses on identifying high-risk cases or managing obstetric emergencies, in an attempt to reduce women’s risk of dying of maternal causes. While facility practices for normal labor were extensively examined and revised in Europe and North America in the 1970s and 1980s, little is known about facility practices for normal labor in many parts of the developing world. It is important for practitioners and policymakers to know the nature and frequency of common facility practices for normal labor. Substandard care has been identified …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This paper describes two initiatives that have used experimental studies to guide the development of community-based health and family planning programs. In Bangladesh and Ghana, factorial experiments were implemented in stages. An exploratory phase developed a service system for community-based health care; an experimental phase assessed the demographic impact of the system; a replication phase examined the transferability of the experimental program to a non-research setting; and a scaling-up phase facilitated the extension of the new system to the national health care program. All stages were guided by research, with questions, mechanisms, and outcomes shifting as the process developed. Large-scale …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Published by the Population Council's Islamabad office, this is the first comprehensive survey of Pakistani youth. The report provides an unprecedented view of young people's experiences with and attitudes about education, employment, families, and marriage. The report findings confirm the large differences in the current situation of adolescents and youth, males versus females, from different strata of residence and economic status. Addressing these requires government intervention, changes in attitude, and input from the media, women and youth groups, and members of civil society.
How Indicators Of Socioeconomic Status Relate To Physical Functioning Of Older Adults In Three Asian Societies, Zachary Zimmer, Napaporn Chayovan, Hui-Sheng Lin, Josefina N. Natividad
How Indicators Of Socioeconomic Status Relate To Physical Functioning Of Older Adults In Three Asian Societies, Zachary Zimmer, Napaporn Chayovan, Hui-Sheng Lin, Josefina N. Natividad
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
In developed countries, socioeconomic status has been identified as one of the most important demographic and social determinants of older adult health. The relationship has not been well studied or contrasted across much of the developing world. Yet, with population aging occurring rapidly in much of Asia, understanding the factors that distinguish between those in better and worse health becomes important. To this end, the current study has two main aims. It first examines the degree to which two measures commonly used to indicate socioeconomic status, education and income, relate to the physical functioning of older adults in three Asian …

Using Graphic Organizers To Enhance The Academic Achievement And Self-Esteem Of Haitian Esol Students, Ingrid Chrisphonte
Using Graphic Organizers To Enhance The Academic Achievement And Self-Esteem Of Haitian Esol Students, Ingrid Chrisphonte
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was designed to increase the academic achievement and self-esteem of English to Speakers of Other Languages Haitian students in language arts through reading and writing. Haitian students were not at the academic level of their counterparts in English. Teacher assessment and observed student behavior in writing assignments and class participation were evidence that a problem existed. Haitian students submitted writing tests that were incomplete. They were unlikely to participate in classroom discussion or to share answers aloud. It was important to make learning enjoyable in a nonthreatening environment.
The writer used various strategies to accomplish the goals. …
Effects Of Classwide Peer Tutoring (Cwpt) On Social Interactions Of Children With And Without English Proficiency, Yaoying Xu
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Learning and Education occur in social contexts. The quality of children's peer relationships is an important indication of children's current and later social adjustment. Children with peer problems tend to experience higher levels of loneliness and other undesirable affective consequences, including social dissatisfaction and worrying about peer relations. Because of the limited language proficiency and cultural and ethnic differences among children with LEP, some of their social behaviors are considered inappropriate by their non-LEP teachers and peers. On the other hand, children with LEP may feel that they do not fit in a group or class activity. As a result, …
Decapitation And Disgorgement: The Female Body's Text In Early Modern English Literature, Melanie Ann Hanson
Decapitation And Disgorgement: The Female Body's Text In Early Modern English Literature, Melanie Ann Hanson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
My dissertation focuses on language and forms of expression for women in early modern English literature. In particular, William Shakespeare's character Lavinia from Titus Andronicus, Elizabeth Cary's character Mariam in The Tragedy of Mariam, and Isabella Whitney's narrative voice in her poem "The Manner of Her Will" are examined. French feminist Helene Cixous provides the theoretical framework for this project. Exploring manifestations of Cixous's crucial terms "decapitation" and "disgorgement" is the objective of the three core chapters. Privileging the female body's text and discussing the variety of means used to "speak" it is of central concern. The connection between silencing …

Increasing Students’ Performance In English Within A Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program, Jacquelyne Hoy
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
During the 2000-2001 school year, 30.76% of the 1st- through 3rd-grade students performed below grade level in the English reading comprehension test. Consequently, 35% of the students withdrew from Lycée Franco-American during the 2000-2001 school year because their parents feared that their children would not perform at or above grade level in English.
This writer conducted an initial analysis of the study in May of 2001, which revealed the following causes for the low performance in English reading comprehension: (a) teachers’ lack of training and experience in 2-way bilingual immersion programs, (b) the English program was too cumbersome and did …
