Humanitarian Task Force

Humanitarian crises expose women and girls to heightened risk of unintended pregnancy due to increased risk of sexual violence as well as disruption in access to and provision of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services. Unintended pregnancies in turn result in unplanned births and, in contexts with restrictive abortion laws, maternal morbidity and mortality due to unsafe abortion or miscarriage. This makes innovative, evidence-informed solutions to address unintended pregnancy that take into account the unique circumstances of women and girls in humanitarian settings critical. Evidence-informed solutions should consider how best to reach women and girls with SRHR services …

Humanitarian Task Force

Sexual violence against children (SVAC) is an acknowledged concern in humanitarian contexts. In response to recent findings on the prevalence of SVAC in refugee camps in Ethiopia, coupled with low levels of disclosure and service-seeking by child/adolescent survivors, the Baobab Research Programme Consortium collaborated with humanitarian stakeholders in Ethiopia to establish mechanisms for promoting sexual violence disclosure and service uptake among young survivors in refugee settings.

This study employed a mixed-methods concurrent triangulation study design (involving a combination of service statistics, group interviews, and fieldnotes) for evaluating the feasibility of the aforementioned intervention, which specifically entailed sexual violence screening (of …

Korean Words In The Oed: Race, Gender, And The Modern English Speaker, Elaine W. Chun Mar 2026

Korean Words In The Oed: Race, Gender, And The Modern English Speaker, Elaine W. Chun

Faculty Publications

This article examines representations of the Modern English Speaker of Korean (MESK) in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), as lexicographers listened to and documented the language of this figure over the past century. I show that, until the early twenty-first century, the most salient type of MESK was the Koreanist, a white, masculine expert on and translator of Korean, the language of a racial other. By contrast, more recent Korean entries, influenced by the global spread of hallyu, have invoked the Korea Fan, a figure that potentially unsettles longstanding ideologies of language, race, and gender. Evaluation Of Community-Based Interventions Addressing Social Attitudes And Behavioural Intentions Related To Female Genital Mutilation In Somaliland, Francis Obare, Dennis Matanda, Stephen Kizito, Chi-Chi Undie

Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices

This study aimed to assess changes in social attitudes/beliefs and behavioural intentions related to FGM and gender as a result of community-directed interventions to accelerate positive changes in social attitudes towards ending the practice. The study was conducted in the context of The Girl Generation support to – Africa-Led Movement (TGG-ALM) programme implementation in Somaliland using public opinion poll and vignettes. Key intervention activities implemented by TGG-ALM included conducting community intergenerational dialogues and small grants for community-based organizations to implement interventions at the community level.

Endline Evaluation Of Community-Based Interventions Addressing Social Attitudes And Behavioural Intentions Related To Female Genital Mutilation In Isiolo And Narok Counties, Kenya, Dennis Matanda, Francis Obare, Robert Omondi, Stephen Kizito, Stella Muthuri, Chi-Chi Undie

Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices

The Girl Generation: Support to the Africa-Led Movement (TGG-ALM) programme works to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) by shifting social attitudes/beliefs and behavioral intentions related to FGM and the gender ideologies that sustain its continued practice through interventions implemented at the community level. This study aimed to assess such shifts in the context of TGG-ALM intervention sites in Kenya, while also tracking the diffusion of the intervention beyond intervention sites. Key intervention activities implemented by TGG-ALM included conducting community intergenerational dialogues in both Isiolo and Narok counties, women-only reflect circles in Isiolo and couples-only/homestead dialogues in Narok.

Kenya’S Path To Building A National System To End Female Genital Mutilation: A Learning Paper On Securing The Anti-Fgm Law, Establishing The Anti-Fgm Board And Sustaining The National Response, Shukri Gesod Mar 2026

Kenya’S Path To Building A National System To End Female Genital Mutilation: A Learning Paper On Securing The Anti-Fgm Law, Establishing The Anti-Fgm Board And Sustaining The National Response, Shukri Gesod

Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices

Drawing on in-depth key informant interviews with three former or current government officials, this learning paper responds to the following questions:

  1. How did Kenya establish a standalone legal framework on female genital mutilation (FGM)?
  2. How was the political and wider support needed to advance the legislation built?
  3. How was the Anti-FGM Board established and made operational?
  4. How was the Anti-FGM Board sustained across political and institutional change?

Learnings from the government officials accounts are used to trace the history of Kenya’s anti-FGM response, and have been documented as lessons for other countries to apply toward their end-FGM efforts.

Hiding In Plain Sight: Trafficking Persons With Disabilities For Begging In Ethiopia, Annabel Erulkar, Galan Bekuma, Lemi Negeri, Getachew Teshome Eregata, Musie Tilahun, Getu Asnake, Getahun Semeon, Weyneshet Gezahegn Feb 2026

Hiding In Plain Sight: Trafficking Persons With Disabilities For Begging In Ethiopia, Annabel Erulkar, Galan Bekuma, Lemi Negeri, Getachew Teshome Eregata, Musie Tilahun, Getu Asnake, Getahun Semeon, Weyneshet Gezahegn

Humanitarian Task Force

Adults and children with disabilities are at increased risk of human trafficking for begging because of extreme poverty and high rates of illiteracy; cultural norms and stigma leading to low status; lack of social and legal protection; and their reliance on others for sustenance and help with movement, especially in cities which are fraught with risks. Despite this, trafficking of persons with disabilities for begging has received very little attention from researchers, human rights groups or disability advocates. This report presents findings from among the first studies to focus on trafficking of persons with disabilities for begging.

Walking Together And Leading Change: Shaping Global Solutions To End Violence Against Children, Stella Muthuri Feb 2026

Walking Together And Leading Change: Shaping Global Solutions To End Violence Against Children, Stella Muthuri

Humanitarian Task Force

The Baobab Research Programme Consortium (Baobab) is an Africa- based, African-led consortium, spearheaded by the Population Council, Inc., in partnership with the Population Council–Kenya and the African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC), that is reshaping the narrative around sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) research in refugee settings. Across Africa’s most challenging humanitarian landscapes, Baobab is proving that evidence can ignite action. Starting with the first-ever Humanitarian Violence Against Children and Youth Surveys in Uganda and Ethiopia, Baobab turned data into solutions—co-designing a school-based sexual violence screening model with governments, UNHCR, and civil society. By embedding trained para-social …

Strengthening The Use Of Sexual And Reproductive Health And Rights Evidence In Refugee And Humanitarian Settings, Baobab Research Programme Consortium

Humanitarian Task Force

This guide offers practical, experience-based direction for strengthening the uptake of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) evidence in refugee and humanitarian settings. Drawing on five years of Baobab’s work in Uganda and Ethiopia, it outlines principles for effective research uptake, including embedded partnerships, rigorous locally owned methods, stakeholder engagement, capacity development, adaptive communication, and continuous learning. The guide illustrates how these approaches enabled pioneering evidence generation—such as the first Humanitarian Violence Against Children Survey (VACS)—and informed service innovations, national policy reforms, and cross-country learning. It provides a replicable framework for translating SRHR research into action and system level …

The Future Of The Malay Language, Ungku Abdul Hamid Ungku Abdul Aziz Jan 2026

The Future Of The Malay Language, Ungku Abdul Hamid Ungku Abdul Aziz

Archival Material (Undated)

There is always a turning point for a language to become a popular language in the international society. Once Malay was the language of a great empire. However, Western Imperialism has destroyed the unity and the influence of the Malay language. The Malay scholars had suppressed the Malay language further for their imperialism without considering the consequences to the culture and the society. After the declaration of independence, it was the first time Malay language has been used throughout the administration and universities. New concepts and new styles were introduced into the language and the spelling system was reformed and …
