Artificial Intelligence And Translation: Exploring Current Applications, Limitations And Future Potential Of Language Models Through Japanese-English Translation, Loklin Elias Nord
Artificial Intelligence And Translation: Exploring Current Applications, Limitations And Future Potential Of Language Models Through Japanese-English Translation, Loklin Elias Nord
Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals
This thesis highlights the recent improvements and capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs), specifically their ability to produce translations between different languages. The continued up-scaling of model sizes has led to breakthroughs in the level of their observed intelligence, allowing them to produce translations that are similar in quality to highly skilled human translators. However, to facilitate the reasoning processes that LLMs now possess, their demand for computational power and the supporting hardware and resources has increased proportionally. Considering the impacts of this technology on the environment, energy resources, and its accessibility, my research explores the possibilities of smaller, highly …

"I Will Not Hear The Melody Of Thy Viols": Opposition To Instrumental Music In Historic Presbyterian And Puritan Worship, Sean Patrick Michael Mcdonald
"I Will Not Hear The Melody Of Thy Viols": Opposition To Instrumental Music In Historic Presbyterian And Puritan Worship, Sean Patrick Michael Mcdonald
Masters Theses
The parallel movements of Presbyterianism in Scotland and Puritanism in England began and developed in the 1500s. Early on, both of these movements established their opposition to musical instruments in the public worship of God. This was not merely incidental to their worship, as though instrumental music could be added without any significant alteration to Presbyterianism or Puritanism as such. Rather, the rejection of musical instruments (usually organs) was essential to their worship, and inseparably tied to key theological principles.

Girls’ Education Roadmap: 2026 Report, Meredith Kozak, Miriam Temin, Lina López-Lalinde, Amaranta Martinez Martinez
Adolescents and Young People
This Roadmap highlights where the gender and education field can align on coordinated action and investment to close critical gender gaps in education and improve learning for all. Building on findings from the original 2021 Girls’ Education Roadmap, it brings together data on the greatest gender and education needs, evidence on evaluated approaches, and where current practice reaches or misses vulnerable learners. From this foundation, the Roadmap organizes insights around 18 gender-related barriers to education, giving decision makers a framework for diagnosing context specific challenges and identifying proven approaches to address them.

Translating Higher Education Into Vietnamese: An Applied Linguistics Approach To Language Equity And Higher Education Access, Z.W. Taylor, Alan Do, Jase Kugiya, Tuan Le
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
One growing population of non-native English speakers in the U.S. education system are native Vietnamese speakers, yet no studies have examined how higher education communication could be made more accessible for Vietnamese speakers. As a result, this case study reports on human and machine translational linguistics work conducted in partnership with the University of Iowa focused on simplifying and translating English enrollment management information into Vietnamese. Findings suggest that the institution increased the clarity and accessibility of enrollment management information by using second-person pronouns, shorter sentence structures, clearer diction, and explanations of institution-specific jargon. Moreover, analyses of machine and human …

The research problem centers on the following main question: What role does the morphological and derivational variation between Arabic and English play in linguistic richness? This main question gives rise to the following sub-questions: What are the morphological and derivational characteristics of Arabic and English? Which morphological and derivational features distinguish Arabic from English and contribute to its greater linguistic richness? The study sought to examine the morphological and derivational characteristics of …

Gamifying The Classroom: An Interactive Literature Curriculum, Ella Mikulecky
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis highlights an interactive literature curriculum that I have created to help youth engage more deeply with classical literary works. It takes inspiration from many existing collegiate-level curricula that fuse historical simulations with literary studies and adapts those teaching methods for high-school-age students. It also utilizes a variety of different teaching philosophies, game mechanics, and literary practices to create an ideal course for fostering engagement. This thesis provides a small sample of the curriculum along with a teacher’s handbook and reports the results of a pilot program conducted in the summer of 2025.

Language Proficiency And Moves In Turkish And English Research Abstracts, Engin Evrim Önem
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The primary function of the abstract within a research article is to convince readers of the study's significance, encapsulating specific details such as its purpose, methodology, results, and discussions and/or conclusions. Notably, scholarly attention has been directed towards the rhetorical structures employed in abstracts found in scientific journals, as authors are believed to employ diverse structures to present their articles in an engaging manner that captures readers' interest. The varied rhetorical structures used in research article abstracts are often referred to as ``moves''. This study investigated the impact of language proficiency and translation on these moves. Six Ph.D. students from …
Bilingualism And Literacy Development: A Systematic Review Of English-Italian Bilingual Children, Francesca Cocilovo
Bilingualism And Literacy Development: A Systematic Review Of English-Italian Bilingual Children, Francesca Cocilovo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This systematic review examines the cross-linguistic effects of English-Italian bilingualism on the early literacy development of children ages 4 to 10. Nine studies published between 1995 and 2021 are included following a systematic search, screening, and quality appraisal process. Evidence supports that cross-linguistic transfer effects influenced grammar, metalinguistic, reading fluency, comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and memory skills across English and Italian. English-Italian bilingualism generally results in neutral or positive literacy outcomes. However, case-by-case variations appear depending on orthographic depth, bilingual presentation, language exposure, and reading status. Children with reading difficulties are particularly sensitive to orthographic differences during second-language acquisition. Although …

The Reality Of Influence: Understanding Poetic Lineage, Anastasia Simms
The Reality Of Influence: Understanding Poetic Lineage, Anastasia Simms
2026
How does one distinguish between imitation and stealing? How does one determine who is an immature or mature, a bad or good poet or writer? At what threshold does someone’s work become so different from its original influence or inspiration that it is now unique? Harold Bloom seeks to answer these questions in The Anxiety of Influence: A Theory of Poetry, the course’s critical theory companion text, where he argues “poetic influence is a variety of melancholy or an anxiety-principle” (p. 7) because it is inescapable. I disagree with Bloom’s assessment that influence is negative and thus anxiety-inducing. Instead, …

Evidence Brief: Shifting Attitudes And Social Norms On Fgm Through Community-Based Interventions In Somaliland, Stella Muthuri, Dennis Matanda, Francis Obare, Stephen Kizito, Chi-Chi Undie
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
This study, conducted in Sool and Sanaag regions of Somaliland within the context of The Girl Generation Support to the Africa-Led Movement (TGG-ALM), provides insights into how community-based, dialogue-driven interventions influence attitudes, social norms, and behavioural intentions related to FGM and gender.
Findings show that while personal opposition to FGM is relatively high, this does not consistently translate into perceived or collective opposition. Individuals tend to view their own attitudes as more progressive than those of their families and communities, pointing to a critical “norms misalignment” that constrains behaviour change. This gap suggests that entrenched social expectations – particularly around …

Paidar: Private Sector Allied For Inclusive Delivery Of Accessible Reproductive Health, Population Council Pakistan
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
Pakistan continues to face critical challenges in increasing contraceptive use and reducing the unmet need for family planning (FP). While public-sector facilities remain key providers, a substantial proportion of healthcare seekers rely on private family physicians as their initial point of contact.
Recognizing this strategic opportunity, the PAIDAR study was designed to strengthen the role of private- sector male family physicians in FP service delivery. Implemented across six diverse districts of Punjab, supported by Health Care Commission Punjab and Department of Health and Population Punjab, the intervention enhanced providers' capacity to deliver quality FP counselling, contraceptive services, structured referrals, and …

Making Better Use Of Data For Improved Health Service Delivery In Punjab: Transforming Data Into Action Evidence, Population Council Pakistan
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
Strong health systems depend not only on collecting data, but on using it effectively for planning, monitoring, and decision-making. To strengthen evidence-based management across Punjab's health sector, the Population Council partnered with the Health and Population Department, Punjab, particularly the Health Information and Service Delivery Unit (HISDU), to improve the utilization of routine health information. This brief summarizes the collaboration's focus on three complementary areas: (1) Development of the ASET (Analytics for Service Efficiency and Tracking) platform to transform routine data into actionable information; (2) Strengthening the Capacity of Data Users through specialized training in data analytics, visualization, and use …

From Evidence To Action: Case For Further Investment In Family Planning For Faster Fertility Decline, Population Council Pakistan
From Evidence To Action: Case For Further Investment In Family Planning For Faster Fertility Decline, Population Council Pakistan
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
For over three decades, the Population Council Pakistan has generated evidence and supported governments in designing innovative approaches to address population and reproductive health challenges. Building on evidence around fertility transition, reproductive health, and the nationally endorsed Tawazun (balance) narrative, the Population Council supported the Government of Punjab through the FCDO-funded Delivering Accelerated Family Planning in Pakistan (DAFPAK) initiative and other strategic partnerships to implement scalable solutions for strengthening family planning services. This brief outlines five high-impact, proven interventions ready for institutional scale-up and provides an actionable path forward to transform routine health encounters into sustainable health system reforms.
Voucher Model For Family Planning: Empowering Poor Women And Expanding Access To Family Planning Services In Punjab, Population Council Pakistan
Voucher Model For Family Planning: Empowering Poor Women And Expanding Access To Family Planning Services In Punjab, Population Council Pakistan
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
Pakistan continues to face significant inequalities in access to family planning (FP) services, with the poorest women bearing a disproportionate burden of unmet need. Financial constraints, transportation costs, limited mobility, restricted decision-making power, and inadequate access to quality services often prevent women from obtaining the family planning services they need.
To address these barriers, the Population Council, in partnership with the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and the Punjab Population Innovation Fund (PPIF), designed and rigorously evaluated an innovative Family Planning Voucher Scheme.
The model linked social protection with reproductive health services, enabling poor women from Rahim Yar Khan (RYK) …

Evidence Brief: Shifting Attitudes And Social Norms On Fgm Through Community-Based Interventions In Isiolo And Narok Counties Of Kenya, Stella Muthuri, Dennis Matanda, Francis Obare, Robert Omondi, Stephen Kizito, Chi-Chi Undie
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
The Girl Generation: Support to the Africa-Led Movement (TGG-ALM) programme in Kenya demonstrates that community-based, dialogue-driven interventions can shift social norms, attitudes, and behavioural intentions related to female genital mutilation (FGM), while also strengthening gender-equitable beliefs. Drawing on evidence from Isiolo and Narok counties, this evaluation shows that exposure to intergenerational dialogues, women’s reflection circles, and couple-based engagement is associated with stronger personal opposition to FGM, increased acceptance of uncut girls, and greater willingness to abandon the practice.
Strategic Communication For Population Stabilization: From Narrative To Sbcc Action, Population Council Pakistan
Strategic Communication For Population Stabilization: From Narrative To Sbcc Action, Population Council Pakistan
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
The Population Council led a landmark national effort to redefine population discourse in Pakistan through the development of a unified, rights-based national narrative—Tawazun (Balance). This narrative, endorsed by the Federal Task Force on Population and adopted at the highest policy forums, reframed population from a fragmented and sensitive issue into a shared national development priority. Tawazun established a clear framework—balancing rights, responsibilities, and resources—positioning family planning within the broader goals of family well-being, human development, and national sustainability. Importantly, the narrative was formally adopted by federal and provincial governments, and integrated into policy frameworks, communication strategies, and development planning processes.

The Undaunted: How Young Adult Activist Literature Depicts The Fight For Social Justice, Emma Stack
Master's Theses
In this thesis, I will explore a wide range of young adult fiction novels that feature themes surrounding activism. My goal will be to use a number of novels to illustrate the importance of analyzing literature that features young people as activists within social justice movements. My main overarching question is: How are young people represented as activists in young adult literature, and how can young people use such literature as a catalyst for social change? I also plan to explore questions relating to how young people are represented as activists, why their voices are so integral when promoting social …

Narrating Injustice: Race, Law, And American Literature, Taylor A. Levine
Honors Scholar Theses
This project examines the relationship between race and law as it is portrayed by works of American literature. It argues that the gap between the legal system’s claims of neutrality and the lived experiences of Black individuals exposes systemic injustice that may be concealed in traditional legal discourse. Texts examined include Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Additionally, Prison Noir, an anthology of narratives written by incarcerated individuals edited by Joyce Carol Oates, is examined to emphasize how modern mass incarceration works to …

Words And Phrases That Matter: A Corpus Analysis Of Vocabulary And Phraseological Coverage In Myanmar's High School English Textbooks, Kaung Hla Zan
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
"Myanmar’s high school education relies on centralized EFL textbooks as the primary source of English input for a significant population of Myanmar youth. Following curriculum reforms aiming for communicative competence, this study provides a corpus-based evaluation of the lexical and phraseological composition of Grades 10 to 12 (high school) textbooks. Using a multi-list approach, this study profiled the textbooks against the New General Service List (NGSL) and the Academic Vocabulary List (AVL) for vocabulary coverage. To determine the frequency and coverage of academic phrases, the textbooks were profiled against three lists of academic bundles identified by Simpson-Vlach and Ellis (2010), …

Secondary English Teachers’ Perceptions Regarding The Impact, If Any, Of Shifts In The Emphasis Of History Education On Students’ Comprehension Of Literature, Bailey J. Poole
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study explored secondary English teachers’ perceptions of the emphasis on history education and its perceived impact on their students’ comprehension of literature. This research used an interpretivist approach and a conceptual framework shaped by schema theory and constructivism to understand whether teachers perceived a shift in the value of history education, how they described such shifts, if any, and how they responded instructionally to those shifts, if necessary.
Data was collected through six semi-structured interviews with 11th and 12th grade English Language Arts teachers from public high schools in Mississippi, each with a minimum of ten years teaching …
Reading Cache Valley Rhetorics: Towards A Composition Pedagogy Of Place, Dax Gove
Reading Cache Valley Rhetorics: Towards A Composition Pedagogy Of Place, Dax Gove
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
“Reading Cache Valley Rhetorics: Towards a Composition Pedagogy of Place” proposes that place—one’s immediate locale—is an essential element of ecocritical writing pedagogy. There are constant interacting rhetorical constructions of meaning within any given place across texts from the different groups who have lived there. In these local texts, the evidence of a rhetorically mediated reality is evident in the stark differences between natures and cultures—meaning is rhetorically constructed, down to the meaning of place and people. This project reads texts local to the author’s immediate locale, Cache Valley, Utah, from white LDS settler and Indigenous Shoshone rhetors in order to …
