Hearing From Men In Uganda: Experiences With Hiv Services And Prevention Programming, And Perceptions Of Dreams—Findings From Dreams Implementation Science Research, Population Council
HIV and AIDS
HIV prevention efforts across sub-Saharan Africa are increasingly focused on engaging men, for their own health and that of their partners and families. We examined experiences with HIV services and prevention programing among men in Uganda whose partners were enrolled in DREAMS, a large-scale initiative to reduce new HIV infections among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). The study is part of the Population Council’s implementation science research portfolio on the DREAMS Partnership.

More Than Brides Alliance—Marriage: No Child’S Play, Endline Evaluation Brief, Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This brief summarizes key results from the endline evaluation of the More than Brides Alliance (MTBA) project “Marriage: No Child’s Play” (MNCP) in India, Malawi, Mali, and Niger. The MTBA consists of partners Save the Children Netherlands, Simavi, Oxfam Novib, and the Population Council, along with 25 local implementing partners. The MNCP project—which took place from 2016 to 2020—aimed at being holistic and targeting pathways to child marriage on multiple levels simultaneously, treating communities as either having the full MNCP package or no intervention. The Population Council’s MNCP evaluation was designed to estimate program impact and trends among girls at …

Meeting The Moment: The Gender And Education Community's Response To Covid-19, Evidence For Gender & Education Resource (Eger)
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Across the globe, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt girls’ education. With sudden school closures, social gathering restrictions, and shifting funding priorities, organizations have had to halt, adapt, or create new girls’ education programming to meet the challenges of this moment. It is more important than ever to coordinate our efforts to ensure girls receive a quality education as we navigate the pandemic’s complex effects. To target COVID-19 response efforts effectively and efficiently, we must first understand who is doing what and where in the global gender and education ecosystem. This is an initial snapshot of global COVID-19 girls’ education …

Intentional Design: Reaching The Most Excluded Girls In The Poorest Communities—A Guide For Practitioners And Advocates, Judith Bruce, Sophie Soares
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The Intentional Design guide is a sourcebook that offers step-wise technical guidance for utilizing the Intentional Design approach, an evidence-based model for the design of girl-centered programs that generates a cycle of information collection and analysis.
The tools outlined in this guide have been applied in sites in 44 countries. Twenty-one detailed field reports—including an extensive discussion of the Abriendo Oportunidades program in Guatemala—set the scene in each context by describing key challenges and problems faced, present how tools were used, and explain the eventual resolutions of the Intentional Design process.

Gendered Translations: Working From Asl Into English, Campbell Mcdermid, Brianna Bricker, Andrea Shealy, Abigail Copen
Journal of Interpretation
American Sign Language (ASL) is a visual-spatial language that differs from spoken language, such as English. One way is in the use and characteristics of pronouns (Meier, 1990). Pronouns in ASL, for example, are created by pointing to objects or locations in space (written in English here as POINT), and do not have a gender assigned to them as they do in English (he, she, him, her). So, where it is not specified in ASL, interpreters must decide how to interpret pronouns into English. Limited research has been done on this topic (Quinto-Pozos et al., 2015), and so a study …

Advancing Integrated Family Planning (Fp)/Hiv Counseling With Evidence (Advice): Review Of Fp Decision Support Tools And Hiv Vulnerability Assessment Tools, Eileen Yam, Tracy Mcclair
HIV and AIDS
This review identified innovative approaches to broadening both the platforms through which FP decision support is offered (digital or otherwise), as well as the timing of lending that support (i.e., during pre-consultation time). In addition, by focusing on the HIV vulnerability domains that are particularly relevant to FP clients, developers of future FP decision support tools can incorporate questions and lines of inquiry that explore whether and how clients’ behaviors and characteristics may place them at increased risk of HIV acquisition and inform their contraceptive choices to optimize dual protection.

Action For Adolescent Girls And Covid-19: Implications For Safe Space Programming In The Sahel, Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This brief presents strategies used by organizations to adapt programs for adolescent girls (AGs) during crises. Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend (SWEDD) planners and implementing partners are encouraged to revitalize and/or maintain Safe Space programming, which can be essential in maintaining contact with and supporting AGs during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is imperative that SWEDD be a driver of change by prioritizing AG and mentor safety in the context of the pandemic and other crises. The strategies described in this brief have been used to adapt AG programs such as Safe Spaces to the constraints imposed by COVID-19. Based …

Lessons On Literacy Training For Adolescent Girls: Considerations For Swedd Safe Spaces, Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Literacy training for girls and young women can bridge the gap between girls’ low rates of schooling in the Sahel region and their desire for lifelong knowledge and skills. Literacy programs may also help promote community behavioral and attitudinal change by making the benefits of girls’ education visible. Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend (SWEDD) has increased literacy training for adolescent girls (AGs) to add to the assets they need to improve health outcomes. As a response to the need to strengthen literacy training components in Safe Spaces, practical lessons from evidence-based programming were compiled. These lessons center the learning …

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research
The second most common native language worldwide is Spanish. There is a noticeable increase in the amount of Hispanics populating Idaho and attending Boise State. Currently, English is the language of science. Although having one global communication language allows for an easier science exchange worldwide, the fact that science is monolingual decreases the capacity of science to reach a greater part of a worldwide audience that does not speak English. Expanding the accessibility of research by translating scientific materials into Spanish will build a society with increased science literacy. The objective of the “SCIENTIA: communicating STEM in Languages other than …

Preferred Incentives For Improving Community Health Worker Satisfaction And Retention In Bangladesh, Frontline Health Project, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School Of Public Health
Reproductive Health
Community health workers (CHWs) are critical actors within community health systems, providing a range of reproductive, maternal, child, and primary health information, counseling, and services. To better understand factors that influence CHWs’ work motivation and satisfaction in Bangladesh, the Frontline Health project, implemented with collaborators from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and supported by the government of Bangladesh’s Directorate General of Health Services and the Directorate General of Family Planning, conducted a discrete choice experiment (DCE) study. This brief presents key qualitative findings from the DCE study in Bangladesh and implications for program and policy stakeholders.

The Business Case For Social And Behavior Change For Malaria With Applications For Côte D’Ivoire And Tanzania, Breakthrough Research
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
While social and behavior change (SBC) investments are considered critical to improving health-seeking behaviors, gaps in information on the costs and impacts of SBC interventions have resulted in an incomplete picture of the value of SBC interventions, their contributions to social and health outcomes, and potential cost savings from implementing SBC programming. To address these gaps, the US President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) tasked Breakthrough RESEARCH with creating a business case for SBC in malaria. This document summarizes the findings from this activity, including a synthesis of SBC effectiveness and cost literature and cost-effectiveness modeling applications for Tanzania and Côte d’Ivoire.

Promises To Keep: Impact Of Covid-19 On Adolescents In Kenya, Presidential Policy And Strategy Unit (Kenya), Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Around the world, reports have highlighted the educational, health, and societal challenges that people have experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Few reports, however, have exclusively covered the effects on adolescent girls and boys, especially in Kenya. Given the limited data on the impact of the pandemic on adolescents, this study set out to collect data and outline the challenges facing Kenyan adolescents in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. In Kenya, adolescents aged 10 to 19 years comprise about 24 percent of the country’s population. This study captured data on school enrollment, experiences of sexual and gender-based violence, time spent …
