Trapped In Polygamy: European Women Converting To Mormonism And Living In Polygamous Marriages In 1850s Utah Featuring She Who Left Zion: A Wife, A Witness, A Woman Unsealed, Rebecca Sanchez
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This Honors Capstone project explores the lived experiences of European women who converted to Mormonism and entered polygamous marriages in 1850s Utah. Through rigorous historical research and creative writing, it culminates in a novel-in-progress titled She Who Left Zion: A Wife, A Witness, A Woman Unsealed. The story follows Phoebe Carter, a fictional English convert who immigrates to Zion after being promised eternal family unity—only to confront the brutal reality of polygamy, spiritual coercion, and patriarchal control.
Grounded in primary and secondary sources—including autobiographies, diaries, and letters from women like Ann-Eliza Young, Fanny Stenhouse, and contributors to The Women …
A Slight Pinch, Carling Mcquinn
A Slight Pinch, Carling Mcquinn
English Honors Projects
This project is a short story collection featuring four independent stories that each explore what it means to embrace the chaotic independence of adulthood and to confront, often for the first time, an inescapable sense of self-awareness. The first story, “Ghost Town,” follows a 19-year-old ghost confined to the Airbnb where she died, forced to face the self-destructive behavior that led to her death. Next, “Camilla” depicts the volatile friendship of college student Lexi and her best friend Camilla as it forms, shifts, and inevitably implodes as the years pass. The third piece, “A Slight Pinch,” explores the complexities of …
Measuring Abortion Incidence, Severity Of Complications, And Health Facilities’ Capacity To Provide Abortion Care In Refugee Settings In Uganda: Technical Report, Baobab Research Programme Consortium, Guttmacher Institute
Measuring Abortion Incidence, Severity Of Complications, And Health Facilities’ Capacity To Provide Abortion Care In Refugee Settings In Uganda: Technical Report, Baobab Research Programme Consortium, Guttmacher Institute
Humanitarian Task Force
Unsafe abortion remains an avoidable cause of maternal mortality and morbidity in East Africa. However, little is known about abortion incidence or abortion-related complications among refugee populations in Uganda, which hosts the largest number of refugees in Africa (estimated at 1.6 million refugees in 2023). To fill this critical evidence gap and support program planning and advocacy, the Baobab Research Program Consortium (RPC), in collaboration with the Guttmacher Institute, implemented the first-ever Abortion Incidence Complications Method (AICM) in refugee settings in Uganda. The main objectives of this study were to measure the incidence of abortion; determine the severity of abortion-related …

Linking Research To Action To Address Unintended Pregnancy In Refugee Settings In Ethiopia, Baobab Research Programme Consortium
Humanitarian Task Force
Humanitarian crises expose women and girls to the risk of unintended pregnancy due to disruptions in access to and provision of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. Evidence available to support and shape improved family planning programming in refugee settings is sparse, and little is known about how to effectively deliver such programming to the most vulnerable, including women and girls. The Baobab Research Programme Consortium (RPC) is exploring how access to SRHR services can be expanded using existing, low-cost approaches, and how such approaches be communicated and scaled up in refugee settings. We propose harnessing existing food distribution and …
Sisterly Bonds Beyond The Grave: The Ethical Implications Of Posthumously Publishing Jane Austen’S Persuasion, Ashleigh Jay
Sisterly Bonds Beyond The Grave: The Ethical Implications Of Posthumously Publishing Jane Austen’S Persuasion, Ashleigh Jay
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
By the time that Jane Austen died in 1817, she had only published four novels. After her death, her family retained her other writings. Later that year, they published one of Austen’s finished manuscripts which became the novel Persuasion. This act of posthumous publication invokes inquiries into whether the action was ethical. In order to better understand the ethics of publishing Persuasion posthumously, one can look at information from Jane Austen’s life and ideas around posthumous actions. Even though Persuasion by Jane Austen was published posthumously, Austen’s choice to leave the manuscript with her sister and her completion of …

Limitations Due To Occupational Credentialing For Immigrants In Massachusetts: Survey Report, Phillip Granberry, Florita Coto Tristán, Fabián Torres-Ardila, Jonathan Vega-Martinez, Maria M. Pache De Athayde
Gastón Institute Publications
The Gastón Institute began investigating occupational credentialing because of a previous research project with English for New Bostonians, which had found that many people in its ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes complained that lack of an occupational credential had caused them to suffer unemployment or underemployment. The Latino Equity Fund at the Boston Foundation provided the funding for a study addressing the problem of determining the extent to which Massachusetts immigrants are having trouble in the labor market because they lack the proper occupational credentials. The study has two complementary components: a qualitative study with interviews of …

Sister, Lover, Monster: Gender, Sexuality, And Monstrousness In Batwoman, Carter Click
Honors Projects
Introduced in 2006, Kate Kane is the modern iteration of Batwoman, who is an out lesbian woman, in contrast to her 1950s counterpart that was created to alleviate concerns that Batman was gay. She would go on to star in stories by Greg Rucka, J.H. Williams III, and W. Haden Blackman that were published from 2009 to 2013. This run established core aspects of Kate’s character, supporting cast, and origin story. Though Rucka and Williams’ work has received some scholarly focus, Williams and Blackman’s work has received very little. This project attends to how these Batwoman comics facilitate queer representation …

It’S Not Like Riding A Bicycle: How A Steadfast And Committed Effort To Writing Can Contribute To The Development Of Student Writers, Meredith J. Whited
Honors Theses
This work investigates the effect of writing routines in public education. Propelled by the words and ideas of Penny Kittle, Cynthia Urbanski, Ralph Fletcher, and many more, a study was completed with high school aged students to find the correlation between writing routines and levels of writing apprehension. These students were given The Daly-Miller Test as a pretest via Google Forms at the start of the study. After responding to a series of five-minute writing prompts over the course of several days, students were given a post-test of the same survey to determine if changes in writing apprehension had occurred. …

The Effect Of Captions In A Flipped Blended Learning Environment On Developing Efl Vocabulary Among Saudi University Students, Mohammad N/A Alolayan Dr.
Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities
This study aimed at investigating the effect of blended learning environment through the flipped classroom model. Authentic videos with captions extracted from YouTube (Ted Talk community) were used. The quasi-experimental method was employed with a pre-test - post-test control group design. Twenty college Saudi students were divided into a control group and an experimental group. A vocabulary test was pre- and post-administrated to measure learned vocabulary. The results revealed statistically significant differences between average ranks of students’ scores in the experimental and control in favor of the experimental group students, which highlighted the positive impact of using captions accompanying authentic …
What Happens In The Shadows: Racial Hierarchy And The Policing Of People Of Color, Nanditha Vinod
What Happens In The Shadows: Racial Hierarchy And The Policing Of People Of Color, Nanditha Vinod
English and Creative Writing Presentations
In this presentation, I examine the relationship between methods used in graphic memoirs by illustrators to depict and critique political and social inequalities. I specifically analyze the graphic memoir Guantanamo Kid by Alexandre Franc and Jérôme Tubiana, which depicts the brutal experience of Mohammed El-Gharani, who was falsely imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay as a child. I argue that the illustrators manipulate the composition of lights and shadows to emphasize racial hierarchy and the inherent power imbalance between people of color and white bodies that severely restrict agency. The usage of lights and shadows, often overlooked in visual arts, heightens the …

Humanitarian Task Force
The Government of Ethiopia’s Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) officials, various government ministry delegates, representatives from International and national Non-Governmental Organisations, UN bodies, and various delivery partners, came together for a Data to Action (D2A) workshop in Addis Ababa from November 19th to 21st, 2024. During this workshop, participants prioritized violence prevention and response activities, directly informed by the HVACS data. This was achieved by translating the Ethiopia HVACS findings into key indicators that were then mapped into actionable next steps by linking this data to the INSPIRE: Seven Strategies for Ending Violence Against Children technical package and the Child …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
BACKGROUND: Effectively managing epilepsy in children necessitates the active engagement of parents, a factor that is reliant on their understanding of this neurological disorder. Widely available, high-quality, patient-focused, bilingual videos describing topics important for managing epilepsy are limited. YouTube Analytics is a helpful resource for gaining insights into how users of differing backgrounds consume video content.
OBJECTIVE: This study analyzes traffic to paired educational videos of English and Spanish versions of the same content. By examining the use patterns and preferences of individuals seeking information in different languages, we gained valuable insights into how language influences the use of clinical …
