The Case For Adolescent Girls’ Rights And Investments In The Implementation Of The Pact For The Future And The 2030 Global Agenda: A Collection Of Global Data Insights, Girl Center
Adolescents and Young People
Globally, there has been notable progress in improving adolescent girls’ wellbeing over the past few decades. These strides have been majorly driven by commitments such as the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the International Conference on Population and Development Program of Action, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, the progress has been uneven, especially in low- and middle-income countries—girls continue to be left behind and face gendered challenges in multiple aspects of their lives, including education, health, socio-economic aspects, digital technology use, among others, which hinder a healthy and effective transition to adulthood. Partnerships and multi-dimensional policies and …

Overview And Impact Of Young Feminist Organizing In Mexico: Rapid Evidence Assessment, Esperanza Basurto-Alcalde, Natalia E. Tenorio Tovar, Paulina Márquez González, Anel Julieta Bobadilla Negrete, Sonia Cruz Del Águila, Ricardo Regules-García
Adolescents and Young People
In Mexico, young feminists and youth-led feminist movements are already leading the way and pursuing radical approaches to addressing social injustice, such as gender-based violence (GBV), lack of sexual and reproductive health care, and gender discrimination. Although young feminist organizations (YFOs) in Mexico are showing an increasing ability to advocate for and effect change, there is limited systematized evidence on YFO strategies and impact. This Rapid Evidence Assessment (REA) provides an overview of the YFO landscape strategies, and impact on policy and social change in Mexico from 2010 to 2023. Young feminists were defined as those aged 15 to 30. …

Rapid Evidence Assessment On The Landscape And Impact Of Young Feminist Organizing In Kenya, Chantalle Okondo, Beth Kangwana, S. Ndolo, N. Maina, Jerry Okal
Adolescents and Young People
Globally, adolescent girls, young women, and youth-led initiatives have been a crucial part of feminist and social justice struggles. In Kenya, young feminist activists, young feminist organizing / organizations (YFO) have been historically rooted in grassroots movements and are now being positioned and brought into formal spaces to play a vital role in rejuvenating, strengthening, and sustaining feminist activism. There continue to be power dynamics, systematic barriers, and harmful policies that underestimate, lock out, or disregard young feminists. This Rapid Evidence Assessment aims to provide an overview of the YFO landscape, strategies, impact on policy and social change, and challenges …

An Exploration Of The Landscape Of Young Feminist Organizing/Organizations (Yfo) In Kenya & Mexico, Jerry Okal, Ricardo Regules-García, Chantalle Okondo, Esperanza Basurto-Alcalde, Beth Kangwana
Adolescents and Young People
Over the last 10 years, numerous youth-led initiatives have emerged globally to address local development and social challenges. These initiatives focus on issues such as gender inequalities, women’s economic empowerment, gender-based violence (GBV), access to safe abortion, girls’ education, climate justice, and other social problems. The Population Council-Kenya and the Population Council-Mexico joined forces with young feminist organizations (YFOs), feminist academics, and other stakeholders to conduct participatory evaluation research. This research aimed to better understand the YFO landscape in Kenya and Mexico, including organization, operations, challenges, and shared experiences. The study provides an overview of youth-led feminist organizations in Kenya …
How Latinx Students Experience A High School English Class In A Monolingual School District, Elisa Malinovitz
How Latinx Students Experience A High School English Class In A Monolingual School District, Elisa Malinovitz
Theses and Dissertations
In an effort to address the needs of the fastest growing population at my school, I asked Latinx students to share their experiences of being in a monolingual English 2 classroom. Students also shared opinions about friendships, Latinx culture in school, and alternative methods of educating non-English speakers.
Through action research we can assess the exigencies of Latinx learners. Further study is needed to determine evolving needs and best practices for increasing the academic achievement for this population. Some possible solutions to Latinx students falling behind their hegemonic peers include incorporating Latinx culture in curriculum and school culture, as well …
Demystifying The Choral Music Of Herbert Howells: A Pedagogical Approach Via Selected Works, Michael Ballard
Demystifying The Choral Music Of Herbert Howells: A Pedagogical Approach Via Selected Works, Michael Ballard
Theses and Dissertations
The music of Herbert Howells is a mystery for many choral musicians. Howells’s popularity in England is unquestioned, but knowledge of his music has grown slowly in the United States. While the BBC Singers’ performance of Requiem in 1980 brought new enthusiasm for his music and the Requiem, he is still seldom performed in the United States outside of small circles which are generally in Anglican or Episcopalian communities. This is likely due to lack of exposure to his music and the perception that the music is inaccessible and mysterious. Some of Howells’s more complex music is inaccessible for …

Summarizer: Sophia Maier
Eileen Langer is a lifelong Bronxite. Despite her world travels, she identifies the Bronx as her home. As a child, she lived in Roosevelt Gardens on the Grand Concourse and remembers walking to see her grandmother across the Concourse. As she got older, Langer remembers going to the movies, going shopping, eating ice cream, and attending the Sephardic synagogue all along the Grand Concourse. Though she went to college at City College, she completed all of her other schooling in the Bronx, including a master’s degree from Lehman College. Becoming an educator herself, she has taught and …

Policy Brief—Safeguarding Women's Health: Trends, Inequities, And Opportunities In Pakistan's Abortion And Postabortion Care Services, Population Council, Guttmacher
Safe Abortion and Postabortion Care
Pakistan is experiencing critical reproductive health issues driven by a high population growth rate of 2.55% per year, low contraceptive use (34% for all methods, 23.4% for modern methods), and a significant unmet need for family planning (17.3%). Low contraceptive use and high unmet need for family planning contribute to high rates of unintended pregnancies which often result in unsafe abortions and postabortion complications.
This policy brief presents the findings of a comprehensive study on abortion and postabortion care in Pakistan. The study was conducted in 2023 by the Population Council in partnership with the Guttmacher Institute. The study is …

Linking Research To Action To Address Unintended Pregnancy In Refugee Settings In Uganda, Baobab Research Programme Consortium
Humanitarian Task Force
The evidence available to support and shape improved family planning (FP) programming in refugee settings is sparse, and little is known about how to effectively deliver such programming to the most vulnerable, including women and girls. Baobab is responding to these questions through two complementary formative studies on unintended pregnancy and abortion incidence in refugee settings in Uganda. The findings pointed to a critical mass of non-users who intend to use an FP method in the future, and of non-users who have no such intention, but are still supportive of FP use. To expand access to FP services using existing, …

Between February 2023 and May 2024, the Population Council, in partnership with the Egyptian Chamber of Apparel and Home Textile Industries (ECAHT) and with support from the Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Cairo, assessed the acceptability, effectiveness and cost of an intervention that combines raising awareness of family planning/reproductive health with on-site provision of family planning services. The intervention, known as the “Our Health is Our Capital” project, was implemented in 10 garment factories in El Amereya Free Investment Zone. Results showed that this model of public–private partnership is …

Girls First Fund: External Evaluation, Brian Medina Carranza, Dela Nai, Neelanjana Pandey, Grace Saul, Angel Del Valle, Fatima Zahra
Adolescents and Young People
The Population Council is leading an evaluation of programs funded by the Girls First Fund (GFF) in the Dominican Republic (DR), India, and Niger. These three countries were chosen to maximize geographic, social, cultural, and economic diversity across contexts, but common to all three is the continued persistence of child marriage and the presence of collective efforts to eliminate it. The broader goal of this evaluation is: 1) to demonstrate proof of concept for the impact of GFF-supported programs; 2) to examine key outcomes of interest to the GFF and the community-based organizations (CBOs) that it funds, including education, child …

Violence Against Children And Youth In Humanitarian Settings: Findings From A 2022 Survey Of All Refugee Settlements In Uganda, Office Of The Prime Minister, Department Of Refugees, Unhcr Regional Bureau For The East And Horn Of Africa And Great Lakes, Baobab Research Programme Consortium, Together For Girls
Humanitarian Task Force
Conducted in 2022, the Uganda Humanitarian Violence Against Children Survey (VACS) is a representative household survey of 13- to 24-year-old females and males drawn from all 13 refugee settlements in the country. This is the first ever VACS to take place exclusively in a humanitarian setting. The Uganda HVACS reveals that children across refugee settlements in Uganda experience high levels of emotional, physical, and sexual violence, which have a major impact on their wellbeing. About 50% of 18–24-year-old females and males experienced at least one of these forms of violence before age 18. About a third (32%) of females and …

The Persuasiveness Of Point Of View, John Brandon Keever
The Persuasiveness Of Point Of View, John Brandon Keever
Masters Theses
An obsession with the point of view, POV, as a craft element, drove the impetus of this research. The artist's statement highlights a love affair with escapism through the written word in fiction. The critical paper reviews evidence of the persuasiveness of point of view, POV, as a critical craft element as seen in the nuances of POV in The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, Persuasion and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and A Time to Dance by Karen Kingsbury and in first-person testimony in journalism. While some research into POV exists for literary classics, like Pride and Prejudice, this …

Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
This study was conducted as part of the efforts of the Council's FGM Data Hub to address measurement challenges encountered by programme implementers in measuring change and the effect of social desirability in the context of FGM. The study involved piloting a simple opinion poll survey using a combination of direct (self-report) and indirect (vignettes) questioning methodologies to generate robust data to measure public views on FGM. While opinion polls have been widely used in market research and to measure public views on other stigmatised or illegal behaviours such as abortion, they have rarely been used in the FGM context. …
