Closure In Fiction And Film: Strategies Of Ending In Howard Hawks's "His Girl Friday", Henry James's "The Ambassadors", Orson Welles's "Citizen Kane", And James Joyce's "A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man", Paul W. Salmon Jan 1992

Salmon

Digitized Theses

This thesis explores closure in two novels, Henry James's The Ambassadors and James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and two films, His Girl Friday directed by Howard Hawks and Citizen Kane directed by Orson Welles. The specific study of closure in films is necessitated by the almost total absence of research in this area. Although study of closure in prose narratives is historically more extensive, the study of closure in the two novels under discussion has previously been undertaken within narrow parameters. Rather than invoking a rigid model of the closural process, this thesis draws …

The Copper T 380 Intrauterine Device: A Summary Of Scientific Data, Irving Sivin, Forrest Greenslade, Frederick H. Schmidt, Sandra N. Waldman

Clinical Research

Intrauterine devices are the most widely used of all reversible contraceptive methods worldwide. Modern IUDs are among the most effective and long-acting methods of family planning and are acceptable options for many women. This monograph presents highlights of the clinical performance of the Copper T 380 over eight years, including the latest data on effectiveness, expulsions, and continuation rates. It incorporates data from Population Council and World Health Organization studies, and work by scientists at Family Health International and in several countries. Clinical studies of the three models of the Copper T 380 have provided substantial evidence of the safety, …

John Donne's Verse Letters To Lucy Russell, Countess Of Bedford: Rhetorical Means To A Friendship., Joan Frances Faust Jan 1992

John Donne's Verse Letters To Lucy Russell, Countess Of Bedford: Rhetorical Means To A Friendship., Joan Frances Faust

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

John Donne's verse letters to Lucy Russell, Countess of Bedford, are more than static hyperbolic praise to a patroness interchangeable with any other patroness. Rather, they are viable and personal means by which Donne creates and sustains a friendship. Through the five verse letters examined in this dissertation, "Reason is the soules left hand," "You have refin'd mee," "T'Have written then," "To the Countesse of Bedford At New-yeares Tide," and "Honour is so sublime perfection," Donne rhetorically demonstrates his understanding of and ability to function within the various contexts of Bedford's life. Using the accepted view of the epistolary form …

Directory Of Surveys In Developing Countries: Data On Families And Households, 1975–92, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Catherine M. Marquette Jan 1992

Directory Of Surveys In Developing Countries: Data On Families And Households, 1975–92, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Catherine M. Marquette

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This directory of surveys contains data on families and households in developing countries. The emphasis is on intergenerational linkages as well as conjugal ties and co-residential arrangements. Surveys that do not situate individuals within a family or household context are excluded. Thus, many labor force surveys with data on the employment status and earnings of men and women are not included unless they also collected data on respondents’ children and/or households. The same is true of contraceptive prevalence surveys that limit their attention to women’s reproductive behavior. The majority of surveys included in the directory are either household-based or woman-based. …

Family Planning And Child Survival Programs As Assessed In 1991, John A. Ross, W. Parker Mauldin, Steven R. Green, E. Romana Cooke Jan 1992

Family Planning And Child Survival Programs As Assessed In 1991, John A. Ross, W. Parker Mauldin, Steven R. Green, E. Romana Cooke

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This volume continues a tradition initiated at the Population Council nearly 25 years ago when the first edition of “Population and Family Planning Programs” was issued. That factbook began a series of 12 editions produced through 1993. The data in that series were consolidated and updated in another publication, and the present volume is now issued, based partly upon a 1989 questionnaire inquiry to over 100 developing countries. A range of maternal and child survival data were added to the family planning information. The relationships among fertility behavior, infant and child mortality, and maternal health are closely interwoven; moreover, many …

By And For Women: Involving Women In The Development Of Reproductive Health Care Materials, Valerie J. Hull, Barbara L. Ibrahim, Nadia Farah, Blanca Figueroa, Margaret Winn Jan 1992

By And For Women: Involving Women In The Development Of Reproductive Health Care Materials, Valerie J. Hull, Barbara L. Ibrahim, Nadia Farah, Blanca Figueroa, Margaret Winn

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The studies in this issue of Quality/Calidad/Qualité describe three efforts to involve women in the development of reproductive health care materials in different settings in the developing world. In Cairo, a women's health collective produced a comprehensive reference book for women; in Peru, a woman's group, with the extensive involvement of their nonliterate audience, developed a series of illustrated teaching materials; and in the South Pacific, an all-woman production crew produced three motivation and teaching videos developed in response to the expressed needs of Pacific Island women. Despite contrasts in the characteristics of the intended audiences, the development process, and …

Breaking New Ground: Reaching Out To Women Farmers In Western Zambia, Janice Jiggins, Paul Maimbo, Mary Masona Jan 1992

Breaking New Ground: Reaching Out To Women Farmers In Western Zambia, Janice Jiggins, Paul Maimbo, Mary Masona

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Over the last few decades, small-scale projects have been developed throughout Africa to help incorporate women farmers into the mainstream of agricultural extension services. This edition of SEEDS presents an interesting example from Zambia's Western Province—the Women's Extension Program, located within the Home Economics Section of the Department of Agriculture. This program is working to change a government agricultural bureaucracy from within by redefining mandates, encouraging attitude change through staff training, broadening village-level opportunities and perceptions, and widening technical and economic research agendas. The program’s experience emphasizes the importance of using a variety of approaches in order to effectively reach …

Norplant® Use-Dynamics Diagnostic Study, 1991, Heru Kasidi, Peter C. Miller

Reproductive Health

After five years of national programmatic use of Norplant® contraceptive implants, in 1992 the National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN) plans to implement a follow-up Use-Dynamics Study of implant users in West Java and West Sumatra Provinces, Indonesia. A Diagnostic Study was implemented in 1991 to prepare for that study prior to final approval, and to get some early insights into implant program operations in advance of final results from the main study. This report is a summary of findings from the Diagnostic Study. The Diagnostic Study had two broad objectives: to obtain information to guide development of the …

A Dance Set: Modern Familiar Essays, Marlene Koeing Oct 1991

A Dance Set: Modern Familiar Essays, Marlene Koeing

Student Work

The modern familiar essay is writing that balances skillfully on the fence rails between information and entertainment, scanning the view in both directions. Somewhat as in a business partnership, one member provides the originality that comes from experience and observation while the other contributes the authority that comes from facts and research. If balanced and integrated, the twin components of information and entertainment make the modern familiar essay as successfully unique in literature as the solid entrepreneurship is in business.

A Jungian Analysis Of Sir Thomas Malory's Tristram De Lyones, Jeanne Elizabeth Kocher May 1991

A Jungian Analysis Of Sir Thomas Malory's Tristram De Lyones, Jeanne Elizabeth Kocher

Student Work

This thesis responds to critical arguments that characterize Sir Thomas Malory’s Tristram de Lyones by his adherence to or neglect of social codes. Although Tristram’s actions as a knight and lover warrant both moral and immoral judgments, interpretations tend to either neglect opposing evidence or paint two-dimensional portraits of him. Tristram’s promiscuity as a lover is interpreted from a Jungian perspective to understand his contradictory behavior. A Jungian analysis concludes that Tristram flounders from one romantic relationship to another as a response to the repressiveness of chivalry. Unable to love a woman and uphold knightly perfection, Tristram goes mad and …

"India, The New Myth--A Collective Fiction": The Construction Of History In British And Indian Fiction About India's Independence Movement, Teresa Dawn Hubel Jan 1991

"India, The New Myth--A Collective Fiction": The Construction Of History In British And Indian Fiction About India's Independence Movement, Teresa Dawn Hubel

Digitized Theses

This dissertation is a study of imperialist and nationalist constructions of modern Indian history, encompassing Indo-Anglian and Anglo-Indian fiction written between 1880 and the year of India's political independence, 1947. Its theoretical approach is feminist and new historicist, and consequently it engages not only the fiction that sought to define the nationalist/imperialist moment in India but other public documents that contributed to this definition, such texts as British accounts of India's social life and moral problems, speeches, articles, and books by Indian nationalists, and analyses of the political situation written by British and Indian historians. This thesis is committed to …

Carlyle And The Economics Of Terror: A Study Of Revisionary Gothicism In "The French Revolution", Mary Desaulniers Jan 1991

Carlyle And The Economics Of Terror: A Study Of Revisionary Gothicism In "The French Revolution", Mary Desaulniers

Digitized Theses

Carlyle's The French Revolution occupies a distinctive place in literary history; its obscure and resistant style, its unrelenting use of Gothic overtones and its deliberate cultivation of equivocalness are part of a linguistic economy that challenges the currency of the sign. Reduced in function to an exchange value, the current sign participates in an arbitrary discourse which Carlyle overcomes with the motivating dynamics of German Transcendental Philosophy. To this end, paper money is exposed as an act of misrepresentation; its validity substantiated by arbitrary and conventional agreement, paper money remains a "wagered" word, a "contractual "sign or general equivalent. In …

"Operating From Bastard Territory": Attitudes Toward The Motherland And The Colonial Self In Four Australian And Canadian Novelists, Elisabeth J. Koster Jan 1991

"Operating From Bastard Territory": Attitudes Toward The Motherland And The Colonial Self In Four Australian And Canadian Novelists, Elisabeth J. Koster

Digitized Theses

This thesis explores the question, inherent to the fiction of both Canada and Australia as settler colonies, of what images are used to depict the motherland, and how this depiction affects the new colony's ability to create its sense of distinctiveness.;Examining critical studies of these national fictions in conjunction with those novels by four prominent Australian and Canadian authors which most closely examine the relationship between colony and Britain, this study uncovers four recurrent themes related to establishing a distinctive sense of self: the conception of opposing images of Britain and the new home; the experience of exile as a …

Adam Naming And Aesop Fabling: Artist-Figures In The Prose Works Of Dylan Thomas, Ann Elizabeth Mayer Jan 1991

Adam Naming And Aesop Fabling: Artist-Figures In The Prose Works Of Dylan Thomas, Ann Elizabeth Mayer

Digitized Theses

The initial impetus for this study was two-fold: to explore the rich but relatively neglected prose works of Dylan Thomas, and to examine the numerous self-referential and metafictional instances within them. Many of the prose works contain representational forms such as dreams, fantasies, maps, books, and stories. Also predominant are a variety of artist figures, through whom Thomas explores the nature of creation and the medium with which he creates, through self-conscious acts of writing and telling. Thomas's life-long concern with the primacy of words, and his self-conscious role as an artist, have been surprisingly overlooked in his work.;Many of …

Images Of Voice In "Paradise Lost", Elizabeth M. Sauer Jan 1991

Images Of Voice In "Paradise Lost", Elizabeth M. Sauer

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the relative status and authority of the poetic voices of Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained within a literary and socio-political context. The case against the monological function of the primary narrator has most recently been made by critics including Donald Bouchard and Jonathan Goldberg who discuss the dialogical nature of this speaker, and by Kathleen Swaim and Barbara Lewalski who examine the exchanges among the different narrators. Another scholar, Gordon Teskey, observes that before PL "few characters in non-dramatic literature appear as free as Milton's to choose their own story" (11). Milton's interpretive model of historical intervention …

Symbol And Sacrament: The Incarnational Aesthetic Of Christina Rossetti, Mary Arseneau Jan 1991

Symbol And Sacrament: The Incarnational Aesthetic Of Christina Rossetti, Mary Arseneau

Digitized Theses

This thesis attempts to establish that Christina Rossetti's particular religious milieu (of which the Oxford Movement was a prominent feature) was a formative influence not only on her religious poetry, but also on the pervasive aesthetic and symbolic practice that unifies the general and devotional sections of her volumes of poetry. Underlying the Oxford Movement (and its emphasis on the Incarnation, its revival of ceremonial in Anglo-Catholic worship, the renewed emphasis on sacrament that it engendered, and the sacramental aesthetic characteristic of Tractarian poetics) is a belief that material creation is able to contain and communicate moral and spiritual meaning. …

Authority And Interpretation In Chaucer's "Tale Of Melibee", Dominick M. Grace Jan 1991

Authority And Interpretation In Chaucer's "Tale Of Melibee", Dominick M. Grace

Digitized Theses

Although Chaucer's concern with problems of authority is widely recognized by scholars, the Tale of Melibee, which he assigned to his persona in the Canterbury Tales, is equally widely regarded as an unambiguous assertion of moral authority. The allegory is transparent, its moral clear, and the tale a slavishly literal translation of Renaud de Louens' Livre de Mellibee et Prudence, critics argue. Though its placement in the Canterbury context raises questions of interpretation--Chaucer prefaces the tale with overt stress on the matter of the tale's sentence, and the tale is followed by Harry's misreading of it--most critics accept the view …
