A Case For Judge-Made Law For The American Jurists From An English Perspective—Drawing Example From The Human Rights Act 1998, Samuel Kuo
Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law
Many authors frown upon judge-made law as an inappropriate and ghastly exercise of judicial activism in American jurisprudence. This, nevertheless, is not the view of English jurisprudence. This Comment proposes instead that the American legal audience should embrace the benefits of judge-made law as a means of correcting the rigidity and inadequacies of the legislature. It does so by drawing an example from the recent debates over whether the Human Rights Act 1998 should be amended or repealed by the legislature, which is comprised of the members of parliament sitting in the House of Commons. By drawing the example of …

WAC/WID programs are uniquely positioned to lead the response to generative AI (GenAI) in student writing—not by policing its use, but by guiding ethical, effective integration across and in the disciplines. This study shares findings from a spring 2024 survey of 226 students at a midwestern university, exploring how students use GenAI in their writing, what they perceive as its benefits and risks, and whether they’re receiving instruction on how to use it well. Students reported frequent use of GenAI for brainstorming and revising but noted limited faculty guidance. Many expressed nuanced views: they recognized GenAI’s potential to support learning …
An Analysis Of The Impact Of Cognitive Writing Strategies On High School Writing Scores In A Suburban Tennessee District, Bethany A. Wilson
An Analysis Of The Impact Of Cognitive Writing Strategies On High School Writing Scores In A Suburban Tennessee District, Bethany A. Wilson
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) writing assessment revealed that only 27% of eighth and 12th graders are proficient in writing. The federal No Child Left Behind and Every Student Succeeds Acts have put pressure on schools to demonstrate proficiency on reading and math tests, leaving minimal time for instruction in other subjects, including writing. In addition to the pressure of standardized testing, teachers also find themselves underprepared to teach writing and overwhelmed by the demands of large teaching loads. While researchers have reported benefits associated with cognitive writing strategies since the 1960s, instructional demands have prevented …
Annotated Bibliography Assignment For English 201, Sara Whitestone
Annotated Bibliography Assignment For English 201, Sara Whitestone
Open Educational Resources
In this English 201 assignment, students investigate a research question about happiness and build an annotated bibliography through 15 scaffolded, low-stakes steps involving research, source evaluation, reflection, drafting, feedback, and revision. They use the same sources to write papers in two different disciplinary genres, adapting their selection and use of evidence to each genre’s conventions, audience, tone, and style. The process emphasizes personal intellectual engagement, responsible use of AI, self-assessment, and the understanding that strong academic writing develops through sustained revision.
As If It Were Food: A Prose Translation Of The Old English Genesis B, Kane R. Malone
As If It Were Food: A Prose Translation Of The Old English Genesis B, Kane R. Malone
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
The anonymous Old English poem known as “Genesis B” comes down to us as one of the most inherently human retellings of the Fall of Adam and Eve. Despite this, the piece is seldom read by the average twenty-first century middle-school learner. The poem, originally penned in Old English, has been translated into modern English numerous times, yet as I read through a variety of these translations, they all seemed to downplay the human element which I found intriguing. Thus, I created my own translation of “Genesis B” with a more general audience in mind, looking to create something that …
"More Boldly I Shall Go:" Jacobites, Hanoverians, And The Fabrication Of Nostalgia, 1745-1766, Jacob Louis Shropshire
"More Boldly I Shall Go:" Jacobites, Hanoverians, And The Fabrication Of Nostalgia, 1745-1766, Jacob Louis Shropshire
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This study investigates how Jacobites and Hanoverians constructed competing forms of nostalgia, identity, and political meaning in the decades after the rebellion of 1745. Although the defeat of Prince Charles Edward Stuart at Culloden ended any realistic hope of a Stuart restoration, it sparked a cultural struggle in which both supporters and opponents of the Stuarts depicted the Highlander as a symbol of heroic resistance or barbarism. A psychic struggle emerged as a result, and the Highlander became beloved by Jacobites and loathed by Hanoverians. These representations circulated through paintings, engravings, clothing, glassware, newspapers, pamphlets, and verse, which became central …

Provenance In The Book Lab Library, Regan Spangler
UROP Posters
For my Distinguished English Major project, I am designing and implementing a catalog of the books in the Book Lab (VCU Campus, Hibbs Hall room 408). This consists of three major components. One, I am compiling a digital catalog of the collection, including book title, author, editor(s), Library of Congress call number, and provenance (in other words, previous owners and users). Two, I am adding corresponding physical cards to each book. Both the digital catalog and the cards include all information previously stated. The third component includes research into provenance of the Book Lab collection. Using David Pearson’s Books as …

Eng 2100 - Writing 1 - Writing As Being, Jonathan Toro
Open Educational Resources
This is an Open Educational Resources (OER) syllabus for ENG 2100 - Writing 1 - Writing as Being. In this course, students will examine how their identities and communities shape their understanding of themselves and the world around them—how it affects the way they move and think in the spaces they occupy. Through the usage of personal narrative and critical writing, the students will study how language, culture, community, and socio-historical contexts influence their ways of knowing and being. Then, they will utilize these influences—the very systems that affect them in tremendous ways—to write themselves into being. All course materials, …

Creating Actionable, Culturally Appropriate Interventions From Survey Data: A Community-Driven Capstone Pilot Project, Nicole Placke
Creating Actionable, Culturally Appropriate Interventions From Survey Data: A Community-Driven Capstone Pilot Project, Nicole Placke
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
The Community-Driven Capstone Track is a pilot program designed as an alternative to the traditional capstone track. With this track, students are able to engage with community partners through an integrative learning experience. The goal is to address real organizational needs in a way that demonstrates the mastery of foundational and concentration competencies.
Unlike the traditional capstone track, the CDC offers flexibility in both project type and deliverables. Rather than one formal written report, students might produce a series of products or tools. Deliverables are decided collaboratively between the student, community partners, and the faculty committee to ensure they are …

How Do Emirati University Students Develop Their Academic Biliteracy? A Mixed-Method Study, Eman Kamel Rababa
How Do Emirati University Students Develop Their Academic Biliteracy? A Mixed-Method Study, Eman Kamel Rababa
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Framed by Hornberger’s continua of biliteracy model, this study investigated the developmental dynamics of academic biliteracy among Emirati university students. The research employed a sequential mixed-methods design, conducted across three public universities in the UAE. In the initial qualitative phase, interview data were collected from 30 students. Informed by these findings and the extant literature, a quantitative survey was then developed and administered to a sample of 299 students from various disciplines. The qualitative data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis, while the quantitative data were examined using advanced statistical analyses, including structural equation modeling. Three primary themes emerged from …
A Detailed Investigation Into Word-Order In The Modification Of Pronouns, Kelli Hesseltine, Joseph C. M. Davis
A Detailed Investigation Into Word-Order In The Modification Of Pronouns, Kelli Hesseltine, Joseph C. M. Davis
Publications and Research
This study builds upon Hesseltine and Davis ([2020]. “The Communicative Function of Adjective-Noun Order in English.” WORD 66 (3): 166–193. https://doi.org/10.1080/00437956.2020.1793499), which examines word order in modification in English and proposes the Assertion of Characterization hypothesis. To communicate an assertion of an entity’s traits, speakers employ two different meanings: weaker, signaled by the order AB as in long (A) hair (B), and stronger, signaled by BA as in hair (B) long (A). The attribution of the characterization is thus made less or more assertively. This work focuses on examples where the characterized entity, the B, is a form traditionally …

Open Educational Resources
This resource offers an assignment sequence for a 200-level writing class. As a variable topic course broadly titled “Writing for Special Fields,” I have flexibility in terms of course content. I ground this course in theories of community writing, where students will learn about how people have written about and for their communities. The resource supports students engagement with their communities, starting with an introduction to QC’s archives. specifically the “LIfe at Queens College” archive, as a way to tell a story about place. Students will then be invited to tell a story about a community to which they belong …

English 130: Writing About The Literature Of Queens (Essay Sequence), Kate Schnur
Open Educational Resources
Source Description — Attached is a draft of a new essay sequence for English 130 (Composition II, Writing About Literature). The traditional essay sequence for this class is: 1. a close reading essay, 2. an analysis of a text through a lens, and 3. a research essay. I have shaped the sequence around a group of literary texts about Queens (you will see a provisional list on the essay 1 prompt) and a small selection of secondary sources about Queens. The first essay is a close reading assignment of one of the literary texts we will read in the first …

I am developing a module for ENGL 371: Twentieth- and Twenty-first Century Drama and Performance. In this course for majors, I have the latitude to choose different topics in my syllabus design. One of the versions I previously developed was organized around “Visions of Home.” In that first attempt I did not successfully connect the material to Queens at any point; in part because none of the plays I selected were based in Queens, I had not figured out how to implement a place-based mode of inquiry of the kind that this workshop explored. The class is organized chronologically (1950s-2000s) …
