Criteria For Design Of Pavement Thicknesses, Kentucky Interstate Highways, William B. Drake, James H. Havens
Criteria For Design Of Pavement Thicknesses, Kentucky Interstate Highways, William B. Drake, James H. Havens
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The Kentucky Department of Highways, in 1946, sought a more systematic criteria and basis for designing the thickness of bituminous concrete pavements. The Research Division was authorized to pursue this work and to develop the criterion. These efforts were embodied in a report (1) to the Department, which offered a system of design based upon CBR's and EWL's. EWL's were computed originally for a 10-yr. period but this practice was revised in 1954, to encompass 20-yr. traffic (more realistic with respect to average road life). Then, in 1957, the Department requested a re-evaluation of the criteria from the standpoint of …

Hydraulic Model Studies Of Culvert Operation, Eugene M. West
Hydraulic Model Studies Of Culvert Operation, Eugene M. West
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Since 1951 the Division of Research has been engaged in a comprehensive study of highway drainage problems. This study has included special investigations of rainfall and runoff, drainage structures in use and the practices used in their design, culvert hydraulics, and other relevant investigations. To date, reports have been published concerning runoff and rainfall variables (1 and 2)* and the effects of barrel roughness upon culvert operation (3), together with the preparation of a drainage manual for the use of Highway Department engineers and consultants.
The most recent special project, part of the over-all study, has dealt with the effects …

Polarographic Determination Of Germanium, Calvin Leo Stevenson
Polarographic Determination Of Germanium, Calvin Leo Stevenson
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
In the past germanium has been determined by either wet methods or by the spectograph; the spectograph being used for the determination of very small amounts of germanium and wet methods used when more than one hundredth of one percent germanium is present. Both of these analytical schemes have weaknesses.

A Study Of The Effects Of The Chloride Ion On The Lead-Silver Anodes And On The Lead Tenor Of The Zinc Deposit In Zinc Electrolysis, William A. Mitchell
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
The electrolyte used in the commercial production of electrolytic zinc from zinc sulphate solutions contains small amounts of impurities each of which has its own effects upon the process. Impurities such as antimony, cobalt, nickel, and iron tend to lower the current efficiency while other impurities such as chlorine, fluorine, and nitrates tend to increase the corrosion of the lead anodes and thereby increase the lead tenor of the zinc deposit.

A Survey Of Acidity In Drainage Waters And The Condition Of Highway Drainage Installations, James H. Havens
A Survey Of Acidity In Drainage Waters And The Condition Of Highway Drainage Installations, James H. Havens
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
During the summer of 1949, approximately one year after installation, serious corrosion failures were discovered in a series of galvanized metal entrance culverts on U.S. 60 south of Ashland near Princess. Because of a unique disparity in their performance at this location, the problem was referred to the Research Division for possible explanation. An impromptu investigation ensued, and the cause of the failure was attributed directly to acid drainage water flowing from extensive strip-mining operations within the immediate area. A report (1)* describing the attendant conditions was made to the Research Committee in December of that year.
As an outgrowth …
A Study Of Runoff From Small Drainage Areas And The Openings In Attendant Drainage Structures, Eugene M. West, J. O. Cornell
A Study Of Runoff From Small Drainage Areas And The Openings In Attendant Drainage Structures, Eugene M. West, J. O. Cornell
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
In 1926, John T. Lynch read to the Kentucky Academy of Sciences a paper entitled, "The Relation Between Drainage Area and Waterway Required for Culverts and Small Bridges in Kentucky." The paper was based on a study of many small drainage structures then existing in the highway system, and a general evaluation of the performance of the structures in relation to rainfall and runoff from contributing watersheds.
As a result of this report, and in accordance with the suggestions contained in it, the Department of Highways adopted a system of runoff coefficients applicable to different sections of the state and …

A Survey Of Acidity In Drainage Waters And The Condition Of Highway Drainage Installations, James H. Havens, James L. Young Jr., Harvey J. Field Jr.
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Every creek gulley and raw interrupted by roadway fills and embankments must be provided with an adequate drainage conduit under the pavement. If the natural drainage is impeded or the conduit is not functioning properly, impounded water over-runs the pavement, seeps through the fill, and eventually disintegrates the section or reduces its stability. The topography in Kentucky, through varied sectionally, requires on the average, one cross-drain for every thousand feet of roadway. Obviously, these drainage structures are of considerable economic importance in the highway program, not only from the standpoint of initial construction costs, but also from consideration of the …
Variation Of Moments With Distributions Of Masses And Areas, Mayo Glenwood Shults
Variation Of Moments With Distributions Of Masses And Areas, Mayo Glenwood Shults
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The purpose of this investigation has been to determine the variations of the first, second, third and fourth moments as functions of distributions of masses and areas. These moments were found about a line or plane perpendicular to the horizontal axes of the figures, and at various distances along the axes. For a complete understanding of the problem, an explanation of various terms will be made in relation to mechanics statistics.
