Modeling Of An Aluminum Reduction Cell For The Development Of A State Estimator, Philip Biedler
Modeling Of An Aluminum Reduction Cell For The Development Of A State Estimator, Philip Biedler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Electrolytic cells are used to produce aluminum from alumina ore. These cells use a carbon anode, a cryolitic bath, and a carbon containment vessel, which also serves as the cathode. The process is not completely understood because of the limited number of measurements and its complexity.;A finite element model was developed that simulates the electrical, thermal, and chemical phenomena occurring within the cell. The model was verified by comparing its output to data presented in the literature, and by comparing its output to data gathered from operating reduction cells at Century Aluminum in Ravenswood, WV. The model was used to …

Design And In Situ Testing Of A Piezometer System To Measure Earthquake -Induced Pore -Pressure Changes, Robert Farrell
Design And In Situ Testing Of A Piezometer System To Measure Earthquake -Induced Pore -Pressure Changes, Robert Farrell
Doctoral Dissertations
Pore pressure changes have been measured in fine sand deposits that are known to have liquefied during earthquakes. Some of the measured signals have not been similar to what was expected during earthquake-induced liquefaction. Using artificially generated signals, several investigators have attempted to determine if existing piezometer fields designed to measure earthquake induced pore pressure changes are operating correctly. The signals generated during one investigation were not similar to those expected from an earthquake. In another investigation, while the generated signals were similar to ones expected from an earthquake, the results were not reproducible; the generated signals damaged the aquifer …
In-Situ Study Of The Influence Of Additives On The Growth Behavior Of Copper Electrodeposits On Copper Single Crystal, Aiwen Wu
Doctoral Dissertations
Trace organic additives are known to be essential in obtaining desired metal electrodeposits in the microelectronic industry, however, fundamental design principles for their use and a scientific understanding of their interaction during electrodeposition is lacking. In the present study we investigated electrodeposition of copper on the Cu(100) surface in air-saturated or dearated acid-sulfate plating solutions containing several combinations of chloride and additives benzotriazole (BTA) and 3-mercapto propane sulfonic acid (MPSA) under galvanostatic pulse-current conditions. The electrodeposition process was followed using in-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM images were quantitatively analyzed by pattern-recognition and scaling procedures.
In the absence of additives, …
A Wavelet-Based Cmac For Enhanced Multidimensional Learning, Brian P. Kirk
A Wavelet-Based Cmac For Enhanced Multidimensional Learning, Brian P. Kirk
Doctoral Dissertations
The CMAC (Cerebellar Model Articulation Controller) neural network has been successfully used in control systems and other applications for many years. The network structure is modular and associative, allowing for rapid learning convergence with an ease of implementation in either hardware or software. The rate of convergence of the network is determined largely by the choice of the receptive field shape and the generalization parameter. This research contains a rigorous analysis of the rate of convergence with the standard CMAC, as well as the rate of convergence of networks using other receptive field shape. The effects of decimation from state-space …

Academic Fleet Renewal- Two Years Later, Larry Atkinson
Academic Fleet Renewal- Two Years Later, Larry Atkinson
CCPO Publications
(First paragraph) In November 2000, I wrote a Soapbox article on fleet renewal for Sea Technology. It is a little unsettling to see how slowly ideas move towards implementation. Nevertheless, we are making progress. In this editorial I will note a bit of that progress and try to guess where we will be in two more years.

Active Disturbance Cancellation In Nonlinear Dynamical Systems Using Neural Networks, John C. Canfield
Active Disturbance Cancellation In Nonlinear Dynamical Systems Using Neural Networks, John C. Canfield
Doctoral Dissertations
A proposal for the use of a time delay CMAC neural network for disturbance cancellation in nonlinear dynamical systems is presented. Appropriate modifications to the CMAC training algorithm are derived which allow convergent adaptation for a variety of secondary signal paths. Analytical bounds on the maximum learning gain are presented which guarantee convergence of the algorithm and provide insight into the necessary reduction in learning gain as a function of the system parameters. Effectiveness of the algorithm is evaluated through mathematical analysis, simulation studies, and experimental application of the technique on an acoustic duct laboratory model.

Testing For The Significance Of Induced Highway Travel Demand In Metropolitan Areas, Lawrence Craig Barr
Testing For The Significance Of Induced Highway Travel Demand In Metropolitan Areas, Lawrence Craig Barr
Doctoral Dissertations
The theory of induced growth in vehicle travel hypothesizes that highway improvements which add capacity to a specific corridor or regional transportation network will attract increased levels of vehicle traffic. This relationship of highway capacity to travel demand is an important consideration when evaluating how effective highway expansion alternatives will be in solving transportation problems. Two different but complementary empirical studies were conducted to quantify the effect of highway system improvements on travel behavior. In the first study, I apply ordinary least squares regression models to estimate travel demand elasticities with respect to travel time using travel survey data from …

Application Of Characteristic Mode Analysis To Variable Antenna Placement On Devices Operating In The Near -Resonant Range, David Anthony Strohschein
Application Of Characteristic Mode Analysis To Variable Antenna Placement On Devices Operating In The Near -Resonant Range, David Anthony Strohschein
Doctoral Dissertations
As antenna sizes on portable wireless devices decrease to the dimensions of the device itself and to that of the operating wavelength, the system begins to operate in the near-resonant frequency range. Currently, a straightforward synthesis approach for determining optimal antenna placement within such near-resonant range systems does not exist. Previously, characteristic mode analysis had only been applied to systems with constant geometry that operated in the near-resonant range and the system had constant characteristic modes independent of the probe location. Successful application of characteristic mode analysis to radiating systems with a constant characteristic mode response suggest that a similar …
Oxygen And Nitrate Enhanced In Situ Bioremediation Of An Oil -Contaminated Salt Marsh, Fabio A. Roldan-Garcia
Oxygen And Nitrate Enhanced In Situ Bioremediation Of An Oil -Contaminated Salt Marsh, Fabio A. Roldan-Garcia
Doctoral Dissertations
Salt marshes are among the most ecologically-sensitive areas to oil spills and remediation activities. Contaminated marshes may take years or decades to recover. Bioremediation is the process of enhancing naturally-occurring biodegradation by supplying limiting nutrients and terminal electron acceptors (TEAS). During this study, two TEAS (O2 and NO3 -) were evaluated for their ability to enhance natural in situ biodegradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in an oil-contaminated marsh. EPA (9071A) and ASTM (D5831) methods were evaluated for screening TPH in the contaminated marsh sediments. The ASTM Method was selected to evaluate TPH levels in candidate sites at the Fore …

Alternate Path Routing Algorithm For Traffic Engineering In The Internet, Shyam Subramanian
Alternate Path Routing Algorithm For Traffic Engineering In The Internet, Shyam Subramanian
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Data flowing through the internet continues to grow every year. Increase in traffic demands increase in bandwidth. But bandwidth1 does not grow as fast as the traffic. This leads to congestion in the network and performance degradation. One way to avoid this problem is to use efficient routing algorithm that efficiently maps the flow of data onto the network; The most often used routing algorithm in the internet is the shortest path algorithm (Dijkstra's algorithm). This algorithm is simple and easy to implement. But this algorithm leads to over-utilization of part of the network, while the other part remains under-utilized. …
