Self-Regulation In The Relationships And Educational Experiences Of University Students, Rebecca Artzer, Sofia Softas-Nall, Blake Karlin, Mckenzie Ruff
Self-Regulation In The Relationships And Educational Experiences Of University Students, Rebecca Artzer, Sofia Softas-Nall, Blake Karlin, Mckenzie Ruff
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
This research evaluates what effects self-regulation, motivation, and self-efficacy have on relationship satisfaction and educational success of university students. The ability to self-regulate is an important component in goal obtainment. Limited investigation has been done on self-efficacy and motivation along-side self-regulation within an educational framework, and only marginal research has been completed with the non-romantic relationships of college students and self-regulation. Data suggest level of motivation did not predict relationship satisfaction or self-efficacy toward school. Learning strategies (indicative of motivation) and self-efficacy did not predict school performance. A second form of motivation, goal orientation, correlated with self-efficacy. Data also indicate …
The Education Of Digital Design For Children, Neha Kharidi
The Education Of Digital Design For Children, Neha Kharidi
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Digital design is a set of rules stating how computer software and hardware are joined together and interact to make a computer work. This is an important area of study that should be made more accessible to children, particularly of the middle school age. Although middle schools do provide access to computer science software, access to the hardware aspect is nonexistent. In this project, I proposed to create a mock up for an android app that aims to teach children beginner concepts in digital design. It is my goal to one day create an app in order to bring these …

Understanding Bullying And The Necessity For Prevention And Intervention In Schools, Erica Marie Thompson
Senior Honors Theses
The emotional stability and mental health of a student plays an essential role in his or her academic success. The emotional state of a student can be greatly damaged when he or she is the victim or perpetrator of bullying. Unfortunately, bullying is an active and serious problem that affects millions of students in K-12 classrooms every day. One could argue that the issue of bullying is becoming more prevalent in present time that is ever was before. In recent years, the rise of technology gave birth to a new form of bullying named cyberbullying. Kids no longer have a …

Gdpr Compliance—It Takes A Village, Susy Mendoza
Seattle University Law Review
When the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect in May of 2018, many legal departments were confronted with the gravity of just how they were going to comply with such a wide-reaching law. If you have international customers (both direct to consumer or business to business), it is not hard to convince your general counsel that compliance with the GDPR is a must. You may even be able to get the chief technical officer (CTO) or chief operating officer (COO) onboard just by mentioning the steep fines—two to four percent of worldwide gross revenue. But how does the …

Title Ix And Gender Stereotype Theory: Protecting Students From Parental Status Discrimination, Jocelyn Tillisch
Seattle University Law Review
This Comment asserts that students who experience discrimination on the basis of parental status have a cause of action under Title IX by using the gender stereotyping theory that is common in Title VII analysis as illustrated by Tingley-Kelley v. Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania. Part I will first provide an overview of the applicable law surrounding Title IX and Title VII. Part II will briefly summarize application of the gender stereotype theory and the applicable case law that provides the legal framework for this proposition. Part III will detail how the Title VII framework can be followed to …

Formative Assessment As A Method To Improve Student Performance In The Sciences, Natalie Miller
Honors Projects
This study focused on utilizing formative assessment to shape student understanding and teaching practices in a junior high science classroom. Students were given a pre-test as a method of formative assessment and their results on the pre-assessment before instruction were compared to their performance on a modified post-test. Students received direct instruction, completed an independent project, and responded to daily “bellringer” questions as a form of additional formative assessment before taking the post-test. Students showed marked improvement on the post-test as average scores increased from a 35.7 percent to a 94.4 percent.

Action Research: Effective Ways To Group Students In A Middle School Classroom, Shawna Russell
Honors Projects
Effectively grouping students based on the lesson, activity, interests or ability is one of the most challenging things to do in a middle school classroom. This Action Research explores the effectiveness of flexible grouping students in a fifth- grade science classroom, and the impact on the students’ learning and engagement. Students were grouped four ways: mixed readiness, same readiness, learner profile, and interest. Six focus students were selected to be interviewed before and after implementing each method for grouping. Formative assessments and learner profile and interest surveys were used to flexibly group the students and create appropriate and engaging lessons. …

Evaluating Educational Training Impact On Pre-Service Students’ Attitudes Towards Human-Animal Relationships, Yuleinys A. Castillo, Denise Silcox, Lynn K. Fisher
School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications
Experts suggest that human-animal relationships can bring benefits to households, work environments, and training facilities. Animals can also have a positive impact on humans’ psychological well-being, interpersonal relationships, and interaction with human services providers. Even though human services providers need to understand clients’ holistic experiences, animals are often excluded from treatment and services. Therefore, human services students, who have exposure to the human animal bond, can be more effective providers and understand the role of animals in society. This study evaluated the impact of information about the human-animal bond on attitudes towards animals among pre-service human services students. In addition, …

Scholarly communication is undergoing an ever accelerating evolution in how research and scholarship are being conducted, how scholarship is being disseminated, and who is included in the creation and communication of new knowledge. At the forefront of this evolution are libraries and academics who recognize that students are not only creating new knowledge that is valuable beyond the walls of the classroom but that there is a dire need to support and educate students and institutions about the impact of information sharing on a global scale. Students share and receive information on the internet with very little context and support …

Mississippi State University Libraries has sought to expand and promote our graphic novel collection; one way we have done this is by introducing the format to students and professors in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education (CISE). Over the last several years, professors in CISE have consistently requested regular instruction in graphic novel use for their education majors, particularly in two classes that focus on child and adolescent literacy. In these classes students are required to read a graphic novel and prepare a book talk or lesson plan that incorporates the material. While these students are tangentially aware …

What will careers look like in 2050? Harris winds her way through the past to unravel the economic trends of today to predict the future work infrastructure. The middle class, made possible by the industrial revolution and several wars in the past two centuries, erodes quickly in the face of the technological revolution, globalization, and rise of the gig economy. Generation after generation are increasingly prone to switch jobs and even careers throughout their lives. Retirement is becoming a thing of the past, as the life expectancy in the United States increases. Innovative solutions for future employment, benefits, and careers …

More Than Republican Motherhood: How Education Helped Women Find Agency In Revolutionary America, Emily J. Miller
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
This thesis is a case study examining the lives of three women who lived in the early American republic: Theodosia Bartow-Burr, Margaret Shippen-Arnold, and Angelica Schuyler-Church, within the context of republican motherhood. While republican motherhood remains a vital concept in the field of early American women’s history, the role was more expansive than historians originally thought. Though all three of these women would remain republican mothers, they would also become “intellectual friends”, “deputy husbands,” and “female politicians,” respectively. By understanding the lives that these women lived within the construct of republican motherhood we gain a fuller and more diverse picture …
The Importance Of Education And Community Engagement Towards Sea Turtle Conservation, Elias Miller, George Meindl
The Importance Of Education And Community Engagement Towards Sea Turtle Conservation, Elias Miller, George Meindl
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
In order to cope with the historic unsustainable use of resources and lack of concern that humans have for the environment, scientists and educators have “elected” species they believe can help to conserve natural resources. As a beloved and charismatic species, sea turtles are often chosen as ambassadors to encourage a change in public perception of the importance of healthy ecosystems. Sea turtles are some of the most vulnerable species in marine ecosystems, yet the roles they play as habitat engineers, predators, prey, and facilitators of nutrient cycling are becoming more apparent as human activities have reduced their numbers worldwide. …

Motivating The Unmotivated: How Are We Supporting Struggling Readers In Upper Elementary Classrooms?, Maci V. Wood
Honors College Theses
Motivating struggling students to read is a question considered by many general education reading teachers and special education teachers alike. Since student classroom experiences today differ greatly from classrooms of the past in terms of instructional practices and learning supports, scripted materials that seldom cater to student interest have often been promoted due to the pressure of standardized assessment. With little to no student engagement present in the classroom, it is up to the student to find the will to read or to the teacher to utilize alternative strategies in increasing student motivation (Cambria & Gunthrie, 2008). However, there is …

Fostering Critical And Creative Thinking In The Elementary Social Studies Classroom: Teaching Social Justice Through The Lenses Of Power And Oppression And Site-Based Experiences, Julia R. Wilkins, Chelsea D. Witwer
Dissertations
This joint study in the elementary school social studies setting enacted the explicit intention of facilitating student understanding of social justice. The first study was conducted in a second grade classroom to assess how exploring historical neighborhoods in St. Louis impacted students’ understandings of diversity. Student writings, interviews, artwork, and adult interviews and surveys provided evidence of the impact the curriculum had on the school community and larger city. This study revealed that it is possible for young students to explore hard histories and present day social justice topics through the use of place-based learning and community partnerships. Their learning …
