Addressing The Suppressed Epidemic: Violence Against Indigenous Women, Amanda R. Young
Addressing The Suppressed Epidemic: Violence Against Indigenous Women, Amanda R. Young
Journal of Indigenous Research
This purpose of this article is to explore issues relevant to understanding the current high rates of the intergenerational suppressed epidemic of violence against indigenous women and how the general public can use this information to aid in lowering this epidemic. Based on a review of past literature, the hypothesis arose of how media representation is related to increased violence against Indigenous women and girls. This article will explore this hypothesis and introduce a call to action from the general public on how we can use our individual platforms to lower this epidemic.

Missing And Murdered Indigenous Women (Mmiw): Bringing Awareness Through The Power Of Student Activism, Devon S. Isaacs, Amanda R. Young
Journal of Indigenous Research
Students are often an underutilized resource for advocacy and activism. Students have a unique positionality as members of academia who greatly understand the power and privilege higher education can bring- particularly when they have intersectional identities as women, minorities, and members of marginalized groups. This article tells the stories of two such Native American women who are using their power and privilege as it intersects with lived experience to bring awareness to the epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW). The article brings light to what drives them to promote social justice movements and how they work to institute …
Reclaiming Impact In The Age Of Awareness-Raising For Human Rights, Azadeh Pourzand, Ali Arab
Reclaiming Impact In The Age Of Awareness-Raising For Human Rights, Azadeh Pourzand, Ali Arab
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
In the last decade, the practice of awareness-raising for human rights has appeared as notably common across the board. Nevertheless, widespread awareness-raising has not necessarily always resulted in meaningful and sustainable impact. Accepting that awareness raising is not a panacea, we challenge the global collective fascination with big impact, while considering the power of small strategic impact that invests in education, and building alliances, and has the potential to last and to expand by way of gradual encroachment through contextually-defined grassroots means natural to its course.
Empowered through social media, advocates are increasingly enthusiastic about reaching massive audiences by way …
Disrupting Dichotomous Traps And Rethinking Problem Formation For Rural Education, Amy Price Azano, Catharine Biddle
Disrupting Dichotomous Traps And Rethinking Problem Formation For Rural Education, Amy Price Azano, Catharine Biddle
The Rural Educator
This article highlights various paradoxes and false dichotomies in rural education research. Using Paulo Freire's theories of oppression and critical awareness, the article delineates a theoretical framework designed to explore a reframing of rural education. We propose that this reframing would serve as rural praxis for school leaders and teachers, and we make use of these theories to discuss school leader and teacher preparation programs. This reframing for the field of rural education research proposes a way through contradictions and dispels deficit narratives underlying conceptions of rurality and theoretical constructs in rural education research.
I Didn't See It Coming: Improving Mental Health Training For Nurses In The Hospital Setting, Brandon Bredimus
I Didn't See It Coming: Improving Mental Health Training For Nurses In The Hospital Setting, Brandon Bredimus
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Nurses are increasingly exposed to patients experiencing acute mental health crises but are often ill-prepared to manage these patients in the acute care setting. Implementation of a focused mental health training program can increase nurse competency in treating this population, leading to improved outcomes for both patient and provider.
Addressing Mass Atrocity In Chile: Learning And Unlearning As A Function Of Social Memory, Irving Epstein
Addressing Mass Atrocity In Chile: Learning And Unlearning As A Function Of Social Memory, Irving Epstein
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
In this presentation, I reference a chapter, that is taken from my newly published book, Affect Theory and Comparative Education Discourse: Essays on Fear and Loathing in Response to Global Educational Policy and Practice (Bloomsbury Academic, 2019). I argue that when schools fail to address issues of social memory or basic existential questions involved in the pursuit of meaning-making for the purposes of understanding human rights issues, popular support evolves for other institutions to fill the void. Through examining the case of Chile, efforts to memorialize victims of the Pinochet dictatorship occur in the absence of robust initiatives to address …
Firing Queer Teachers From Catholic Schools: Ethical And Theological Considerations, Ish Ruiz
Firing Queer Teachers From Catholic Schools: Ethical And Theological Considerations, Ish Ruiz
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Since 2007, there have been over 90 cases of queer employees fired from Catholic institutions – many of which include dismissals of queer educators from Catholic schools. As religious institutions, Catholic schools are constitutionally protected by a ministerial exception that offers legal immunity to Catholic educational institutions that fire queer employees (which are sometimes considered “ministers” by the courts). The ministerial exception is an extension of the institution’s right to religious freedom to promote its doctrine though its schools. Although this right to discriminate is legally protected, from a moral standpoint, one may argue that the exercise of one human …

Collaborative Allied Health And Nursing Interprofessional Health Education: Beginning The Journey, Anita Hazelwood, Lisa Delhomme, Scott Sittig
Collaborative Allied Health And Nursing Interprofessional Health Education: Beginning The Journey, Anita Hazelwood, Lisa Delhomme, Scott Sittig
Journal of Interprofessional Practice and Collaboration
The Allied Health and Nursing Departments within the College of Nursing and Allied Health Professions at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette have begun a journey towards interprofessional health education (IPE) with the vision of offering multiple IPE courses for the allied health and nursing students. The need for interprofessional education in the health professions has been recognized for many years. In 1998, the Pew Health Professions Commission identified the need for interdisciplinary teams as an endeavor to strive for in the 21st century. A variety of terms have been used to describe this pedagogic practice including shared learning, interprofessional …
A Wac Composition I Memoir, Nathan Larson
A Wac Composition I Memoir, Nathan Larson
Theses and Dissertations
Composition I: Writing About the Visual Arts was a freshman / sophomore level writing course constructed on the methodology of Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC). Would student writing skills improve if writing assignments were based in the visual arts and the students who enrolled in the course interested in pursuing art history or the studio arts as a major or minor? Analyzing the semester writing assignments, I would ascertain if student writing skills did indeed improve and try to ascertain if WAC was a or the contributing factor. Ultimately, none of the students taking this course had any background in …
Teaching Hierophany Through Film And Film Through Hierophany, Marc Yamada
Teaching Hierophany Through Film And Film Through Hierophany, Marc Yamada
Journal of Religion & Film
Courses that deal with cinematic representations of the sacred often focus on the experiences of characters in the film, relegating the viewer to the position of a passive witness to the reorienting effects of cinematic hierophanies. These types of courses do not take full advantage of the power of the cinematic medium to transform the way viewers understand the ontological and temporal structures they use to anchor themselves in the “profane” world. Based on my undergraduate course Cinema and the Sacred, this article outlines ways to allow students to experience the full transformative effects of cinema. As is the case …

Honors College Portfolios
This portfolio is a collection of my work throughout my past 4 years in Duquesne University’s School of Education. As a Middle-Level Education major, the following pieces are focused on student inquiry in the main 4 subjects of my certification area: Mathematics, English, Social Studies, and Science in addition to Inclusive Education. It is in my opinion that there has been a major shift in how students are taught in comparison to today from even just 10 years ago. In the past, teachers often resorted to teaching the material to the students without allowing them the opportunity to explore and …
Examining Diagnostic Utility Of Celf-5 Sentence Comprehension Test, Dayana Lituma-Solis
Examining Diagnostic Utility Of Celf-5 Sentence Comprehension Test, Dayana Lituma-Solis
NERA Conference Proceedings 2019
In our partnership with urban schools serving large populations of students from lower socioeconomic and culturally diverse backgrounds, we have provided research-based interventions for improving the reading skills of at-risk readers in first and second grade. Our research augments the school’s response-to-intervention (RTI) while simultaneously investigating the efficacy of our assessments and interventions. Because the school we work with tends to have insufficient personnel and resources to serve all who need RTI, it is essential that our screening measures can accurately identify children who may need extra intervention. Last year we were asked to assess kindergarteners and provide an intervention …

Availability And Quality Of Resources And Their Effect On Continuance To Higher Education, Tabitha Lenhart
Availability And Quality Of Resources And Their Effect On Continuance To Higher Education, Tabitha Lenhart
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
This project is a research proposal. The main purpose of this proposal is to determine if resources have an effect on the number of students who go on to higher educations after high school. Many studies have been done to see what resources effect students achievement levels. This proposed study looks to determine which resources have the greatest effect on students confidence and preparedness to go on to higher education. Once this is discovered, certain schools would receive extra funding to go towards these resources and survey the students and teachers again to see if there is an increase of …

Preschool For All: Plyler V. Doe In The Context Of Early Childhood Education, Shiva Kooragayala
Preschool For All: Plyler V. Doe In The Context Of Early Childhood Education, Shiva Kooragayala
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
In its 1982 opinion in Plyler v. Doe, the Supreme Court held that a state could not deny undocumented children living within its borders a public and free K-12 education. This Note argues that Plyler’s protections extend to publicly-funded early childhood education programs that serve children between the ages of three and five. Due to the broad support of researchers, educators, and the general public, early childhood education programs funded by local, state, and the federal governments have become an integral part of a comprehensive public education today. While these early childhood education programs are nominally open to all students …

The Power Of Play: An Action Research Study Examining Teachers’ Use Of Gamified Learning Practices To Develop Habits Of Mind In Elementary Students, Christina Clark
The Power Of Play: An Action Research Study Examining Teachers’ Use Of Gamified Learning Practices To Develop Habits Of Mind In Elementary Students, Christina Clark
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
The development of specific habits and skills is critical to students’ academic success. Costa and Kallick (2008, 2009) created a framework of these habits over their 25 yearslong collaboration called habits of mind. In this framework, Costa and Kallick detail the habits that students need to develop to be successful in school and beyond. An action research study was conducted to determine the influence of gamified learning practices to help students develop habits of mind in elementary students. The study participants were elementary teachers from upper elementary school in a large, suburban school district. Over eight weeks, five participants spiraled …
E-Waste Shouldn’T Be Waste: A Study On The Practices, Perceptions, And Policies On E-Waste In Urban Arusha, Tanzania, Melanie Mckenzie
E-Waste Shouldn’T Be Waste: A Study On The Practices, Perceptions, And Policies On E-Waste In Urban Arusha, Tanzania, Melanie Mckenzie
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This study examines the e-waste stream in urban Arusha, answer the questions of where electronics go, how people usually dispose of them, if people are aware of the impacts of e-waste, and what next steps are necessary. The study took place in November 2019 in urban Arusha, Tanzania. Through snowball and convenience sampling in 4 quotas (community members, electricians, business members, and a policy maker), the study finds that there is no place for the proper disposal of e-waste in Arusha. Many electronics are disposed of improperly by being put into the landfill or burned. Most participants were unaware of …
"A Miss Is As Good As A Mile": Examining Social Distance As A Predictor Of Academic Performance In Kentucky, Anna K. Davidson
"A Miss Is As Good As A Mile": Examining Social Distance As A Predictor Of Academic Performance In Kentucky, Anna K. Davidson
Honors Theses
This paper examines social distance and how it relates to academic performance for students in Kentucky high schools. To perform this examination, I ran a series of bivariate regressions of student performance scores and differing variables that account for social distance such as race and/or ethnicity, socioeconomic status, types of classes offered in a school, and, primarily, location of the school. Results showed that as the number of students of color enrolled at a school increases, the gap in performance between groups of traditionally underserved students and non-underserved students increases. This gap also increases as more students are enrolled in …
