Marshall Journal of Medicine
The objective of this paper is to introduce selected statistical and epidemiologic topics that are of interest to interdisciplinary teams of healthcare quality professionals, educators, technical staff, and researchers who participate in clinical simulation scholarship. Four research vignettes in the setting of a hypothetical clinical simulation training workshop are presented. The first vignette illustrates the utility of exact logistic regression when analyzing a small dataset. The second underscores the importance of using an appropriate method to account for the repeated measurement of an outcome. The third illustrates the use of the intraclass correlation coefficient to measure inter-rater reliability. The final …

Letters On The Aesthetic Deformation Of Man, Katya Mandoki
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Friedrich Schiller wrote Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man hoping to elevate human potential through the arts for the development of free citizens of the Republic, and also in reaction to the decline of the French Revolution into a Reign of Terror. Nowadays, with the prominent role social networks have acquired in human relations, aesthetics is an invaluable tool for capturing attention in marketing and political propaganda, no less than in recruitment and indoctrination by terrorist organizations. Adopting a pragmatics approach, we will examine Schiller’s relevance today regarding uses and abuses of aesthetics related to terrorism, focusing on the …

Exploring Puerto Rican Preservice Teachers’ Resilience: A Focus Group Study, Yitza A. Arcelay-Rojas
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
This study explored the experiences of 10 Puerto Rican middle and high school preservice teachers at the end of their student teaching experience. The qualitative design, using the focus group technique, provided insight into the phenomenon of teachers’ resilience. The analysis incorporated the main constructs of resilience-building proposed by Jordan’s model of relational resilience: mutuality, empowerment, and development of courage. This study reinforced the notion of the importance of promoting supportive relationships with mentors and students. These relationships empowered teachers and helped them become more skilled in their profession. Addressing more aspects of resilience-building including before, during, and after their …

Social Work Faculty Publications
Developing faculty interested in aging may help social work meet the needs of our growing aging population. However, doctoral students need a variety of supports to complete PhDs and become gerontological social work faculty. This study explored one program’s role in supporting the development of social work doctoral students to faculty in gerontology. An e-mail invitation was sent to all former participants (2010–2016 cohorts) of the Association for Gerontology Education in Social Work (AGESW) Pre-Dissertation Fellows Program (PDFP). The 38-question online survey consisted of Likert-type scales, multiple answers, and one open-ended question per section about the program’s impacts on …

A Mixed Method Study Of Infrastructure Resilience Education And Instruction, John Richards, Suzanna Long
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
As the frequency and severity of natural and man-made disasters increases, the importance of improving the resilience of complex infrastructure systems in an uncertain environment is increasingly critical. Proper training and education are key components to addressing this issue, but it is unclear how and where modeling under uncertainty, infrastructure systems management, and resilient systems are integrated into the standard undergraduate and graduate engineering management curriculum. This research uses a mixed method to determine whether and at what level engineering managers receive instruction regarding the implementation of tools and techniques to improve infrastructure resilience. A review of current courses and …

What Do College Students Have To Learn From The Amish?, Caroline Brock
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
This paper presents the results of a survey of college courses taught on the Amish. It is based on a series of interviews with instructors at other institutions of higher learning whose courses focus on the Amish, an examination of their syllabi, and analysis of student writing from the course I teach at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The survey was designed to ascertain the goals of professors who teach a class about the Amish and how they best achieve their course objectives. Secondly, the survey explored what attracts college students to a course about the Amish, and what prior knowledge, …

How To End A Discussion: Consensus Or Hegemony? A Response To "Education For Deliberative Democracy And The Aim Of Consensus", Ásgeir Tryggvason
How To End A Discussion: Consensus Or Hegemony? A Response To "Education For Deliberative Democracy And The Aim Of Consensus", Ásgeir Tryggvason
Democracy & Education
By taking the vantage point of agonistic pluralism, the aim is to enter into dialogue with Samuelsson’s theoretical development of consensus as an educational aim for classroom discussions. The response highlights three points of interest in the deliberative conception of consensus. The first point relates to the problem of exclusion, which Samuelsson clearly framed as something that concerns deliberative theory and agonistic theory. The second point is about the relation between conflict and consensus and the kind of conflict that is compatible with Samuelsson’s idea of consensus. The concluding part of this response is an exploration of how the agonistic …

Valuing International Student Presence With A Global Curriculum: A Cosmopolitan Approach, Sheri Dion, Denise Desrosiers
Democracy & Education
Against the backdrop of increasing political polarization and growing contention over ideological differences, U.S. colleges and universities are facing the daunting challenges of trying to prepare students for economic and personal engagement with a globalized world. Although many institutions admit students from other countries, they often overlook the opportunity to engage with the growing numbers of international students in their midst. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the discussion of how international student presence could be incorporated and valued by adopting a cosmopolitan approach in U.S. higher education. Recognizing that a cosmopolitan approach presents many educational challenges, …

Red States, Blue States, And Media Literacy: Political Context And Media Literacy, Kristal Curry, Todd S. Cherner
Democracy & Education
This paper examines the ways that political contexts affect the perceptions and practices of social studies preservice teachers (SSPSTs) being prepared in a conservative “Red State” compared to those being prepared in a liberal “Blue State.” The researchers analyzed how controversial the SSPSTs in each context considered the practice of teaching media literacy by exploring their beliefs about media literacy using a survey, analyzing practices related to media literacy through a targeted lesson plan assignment, and facilitating focus groups to member check emerging themes. Survey data indicated that both groups believed teaching media literacy skills was essential, but the assignment …
Debugging: The Key To Unlocking The Mind Of A Novice Programmer?, Anthony A. Lowe
Debugging: The Key To Unlocking The Mind Of A Novice Programmer?, Anthony A. Lowe
School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series
Novice programmers must master two skills to show lasting success: writing code and, when that fails, the ability to debug it. Instructors spend much time teaching the details of writing code but debugging gets significantly less attention. But what if teaching debugging could implicitly teach other aspects of coding better than teaching a language teaching debugging? This paper explores a new theoretical framework, the Theory of Applied Mind for Programming (TAMP), which merges dual process theory with Jerome Bruner’s theory of representations to model the mind of a programmer. TAMP looks to provide greater explanatory power in why novices struggle …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
As instructors, there is an incredible responsibility to deliver content that is true to the standards of which the institution requires. But not only is it necessary to deliver content, it is necessary to deliver content in a way that promotes student learning, promotes student success, and an engages higher levels of thinking. The Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) Course in Effective teaching practices provides instructors evidence based strategies that do just that. As the reflections display, applying these strategies achieves the University goal to support students towards learning, success, and higher levels of thinking.
Revisiting The Role Of Education In Global Society: Relevance Of The Concept Of “Value Generalization” In An Educational Context, Matteo Tracchi Phd
Revisiting The Role Of Education In Global Society: Relevance Of The Concept Of “Value Generalization” In An Educational Context, Matteo Tracchi Phd
Societies Without Borders
Interpreting global society through the morphogenetic approach, the article looks at education as one of the dimensions of social change brought about by the plural process of globalization. The role and vision of education will therefore be questioned to finally claim that education has to be revisited in culturally diverse and complex global societies. Necessary steps include moving from a market- to a human-centred approach to education and taking the paradigm of human rights as the universal point of departure. Indeed, framing the concept of “value generalization” (Joas 2013) within an educational context, the paper argues that human rights should …
The Role Of Metacognition In Visual Art Education, Renae P. Mccollum
The Role Of Metacognition In Visual Art Education, Renae P. Mccollum
Master's Theses
Metacognition is a conscious activity that occurs in the brain when an individual monitors or controls his or her thinking. Research in multiple fields has found that metacognition plays a significant role in a person’s learning. It is currently a popular trend in general education to teach students metacognitive strategies, and research has shown that it is a practical tool to boost student success. Moreover, metacognition is most effective when it is taught explicitly and regularly practiced by the students. There is a need for more research into the effectiveness of explicitly teaching metacognition in middle and high school visual …

Disability, Gender And Race: Does Educational Attainment Reduce Earning Disparity For All Or Just Some?, David C. Baldridge, Mukta Kulkarni, Beatrix Eugster, Richard Dirmyer
Personnel Assessment and Decisions
Although interest in research on persons with disabilities has grown steadily, these individuals continue to encounter workplace discrimination and remain marginalized and understudied. We draw on human capital and discrimination theories to propose and test hypotheses on the effects of educational attainment on earnings (in)equality for persons with disabilities and the moderating influence of gender and race using 885,950 records, including 40,438 persons with disabilities from the American Community Survey 2015 (United States Census Bureau, 2015). Consistent with human capital theory, we find that persons with disabilities benefit from greater educational attainment, yet consistent with disability discrimination theories, we find …
Making Sense Of Incentives: Taming Business Incentives To Promote Prosperity, Timothy J. Bartik
Making Sense Of Incentives: Taming Business Incentives To Promote Prosperity, Timothy J. Bartik
Upjohn Press
In evaluating incentives, everything depends on the details: how much in incentives it takes to truly cause a firm to locate or expand, the multiplier effects, the effects of jobs on employment rates, how jobs affect tax revenue versus public spending needs. Do benefits of incentives exceed costs? This depends on the details. This book is about those details. What magnitudes of incentive effects are plausible? How do benefits and costs vary with incentive designs? What advice can be given to evaluators? What is an ideal incentive policy? Answering these questions about incentives depends on a model of incentive effects, …
