Media & Trust: Exploring The Differences Between Traditional And New Media Forms, Alexandra Jones
Media & Trust: Exploring The Differences Between Traditional And New Media Forms, Alexandra Jones
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
This research seeks to explore how news media, traditional versus new, influences public trust, as well as, what types of consumers use traditional versus new media. My hypotheses are that (A) that those who use primarily new media to access news will have less trust in the news they are consuming and (B) those who have at least a college degree, are below 30 in age, and use, daily, a computer in the course of their work, will use primarily new media to access news. Using an online survey administered through the platform Qualtrics, distributed through Amazon Mechanical Turk, I …
Do Differences In Teaching Evaluations Really Matter? An Investigation Into What Constitutes A Meaningful Difference In Evaluations Of Professors, Catherine Bain
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
This study sought to determine what constitutes a minimally meaningful difference in student evaluations of their professors, when students are asked to rate their professors on the traditional 5-point teaching effectiveness item commonly used in higher education. A minimally meaningful difference is the smallest difference between two ratings that: 1) exceeds chance variation and 2) corresponds to a difference deemed meaningful using some external anchor or standard. Data was obtained through a series of surveys given to students at Butler University and to an online nationwide sample. Analysis occurred through both an anchor-based approach, using data obtained from a single …
Impact Of Education On Hiv Testing Among African American Women In The United States, Florence Matimbah Mbangowah
Impact Of Education On Hiv Testing Among African American Women In The United States, Florence Matimbah Mbangowah
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Improved and increased human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing among African American women in the United States could facilitate early detection of the virus. The purpose of this cross-sectional quantitative study was to determine if there was a significant association between HIV testing participation and education level (i.e., high school, college, post-college level) based on access to healthcare after accounting for insurance, income, employment, marital status, English language proficiency, and vision quality. The integrated theory of health behavior change, the theoretical framework used for this research, proposes that changes in health behavior can be improved by various factors such as fostering …
Survey Of Teachers’ Use Of And Preferences For Professional Development Regarding Available Technology, Shannon Main-Petelka
Survey Of Teachers’ Use Of And Preferences For Professional Development Regarding Available Technology, Shannon Main-Petelka
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem in a medium-sized school district is the lack of data regarding what currently accessible technology and technology learning activities (TLAs) teachers use, have access to, and for which technology and TLAs they desire professional development (PD). There is a gap in practice in that technology directors lack data-based plans for PD. The purpose of this nonexperimental quantitative study was to analyze teachers’ ratings of technology access, use, and desire for PD including the correlation between teachers’ use of technology and their previous PD hours as well as between teachers’ desire to use technology and their location in their …
Getting The End Of Life Care Conversation Started, Lisa Ann Mccabe-Evans
Getting The End Of Life Care Conversation Started, Lisa Ann Mccabe-Evans
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractEducation is needed among the health care collaborative team to address the lack of end of life conversation, the underutilization of hospice leading to patients’ end of life wishes not being met, the increased depression among bereaved loved ones, and the increased health care costs at the end of life. Nurses reduce the patient’s physical and emotional stress by helping guide conversations and answer questions to meet the needs of patients and their loved ones. This project addressed the practice-focused question to determine if nursing knowledge and expressed intentions about end of life care increase as shown via the difference …
The Great Turning: A Call For Systems-Thinkers, Gabriella M. Demarce
The Great Turning: A Call For Systems-Thinkers, Gabriella M. Demarce
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
David Orr, in an article on ecological intelligence reminds us that the modern world was shaped by people who did not understand that our social and economic systems could not coexist with the rest of the biological or natural systems on Earth (Orr, 1994). My research is rooted in Orr’s argument and discovering ways to shift this degrading paradigm. With my belief in the power of education in empowering youth and my background in environmental and climate change studies, I see a future in great need of people who holistically understand the functions of all types of systems and can …

Use And Perception Of Beyond-The-Classroom Learning Skills By Students In High School, Alyssa Nicolina Yusko
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
College readiness in the United States is a multifaceted and complex concept, with many contributing factors that often overlap, and many students leave high school and enter college lacking the skills or knowledge necessary to succeed in higher education. This study investigates a set of study skills and self-management skills related to college readiness. I label this set Beyond-the-Classroom Learning Skills (BCLS). I investigate these skills as they relate to factors of cultural capital both in the home and at school. Using the theory of cultural capital, I determine probable sources of cultural capital in each of these settings and …

O Brother Where Art Thou? The Struggles Of African American Men In The Global Economy Of The Information Age, Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt
O Brother Where Art Thou? The Struggles Of African American Men In The Global Economy Of The Information Age, Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt
Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality
As early as the late 1980’s, William Wilson argued that widespread economic transitions had altered the socioeconomic structure of American inner cities to the detriment of African Americans. Wilson identified declines in manufacturing work and its replacement with poorly compensated service sector work as driving racial segregation and leaving African Americans jobless, poor and alienated from American society. These transitions were particularly problematic for African American men since manufacturing work was their primary gateway to middle-class employment while African American women had already focused more on service work.
Since the initial exposition of Wilson’s theory of deindustrialization, Wilson’s framework of …

Educating Girls, Educated Women: Dehomogenizing The Impact Of Education In Development, Tricia Beck-Peter, Nikolai G. Wenzel
Educating Girls, Educated Women: Dehomogenizing The Impact Of Education In Development, Tricia Beck-Peter, Nikolai G. Wenzel
College of Business and Economics
After a half-century of failed top-down international aid efforts that ignore basic microeconomics, the New Development Economics (NDE) offers an alternative. First, sound institutions (such as rule of law, property rights, contractual enforcement, etc.); second, respect for basic microeconomic principles (from incentives to knowledge). Within the New Development Economics, development economist William Easterly offers controversial and innovative insights; one of these is the ineffectiveness of education-alone, and without sound institutions-for promoting growth. We argue that Easterly is generally correct, but we improve on Easterly's lessons by dehomogenizing education. Specifically, education for girls has high marginal returns: at the micro level, …

Honors Theses and Capstones
Although accounting has gone through significant changes over the years due to technological advancement, the profession remains at the core of business. Technology has not only impacted the accounting profession, but has completely transformed the business world. As professionals are continuously introduced to new technology platforms, their ability to analyze and interpret data is enhanced. The research presented in this paper seeks to understand which platforms are leading the way for change within the accounting profession. More specifically, this paper explores which platforms professional accountants perceive as most important to their job. This involves understanding which platforms they perceive themselves …

Perceptions Of White Mountain Apache High School Graduates About College, Tyler Rush Bangert
Perceptions Of White Mountain Apache High School Graduates About College, Tyler Rush Bangert
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Very few high school graduates from the White Mountain Apache Reservation go on to college, and it is not known what perceptions may contribute to a decision not to attend college. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study is to investigate these perceptions, including cultural values and family obligations. The framework of this study is founded on Tribal Critical Race Theory, also known as TribalCrit, which came out of Critical Race Theory (CRT). TribalCrit posits that colonization (Western European peoples colonizing Native American lands and peoples) is endemic in society. Seventeen White Mountain Apache tribal members who had graduated …

Hospital Nurses’ Perceptions Of Computer-Assisted Instruction For Professional Development, Katherine Irizarry
Hospital Nurses’ Perceptions Of Computer-Assisted Instruction For Professional Development, Katherine Irizarry
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) is increasingly being used for professional development. However, at one hospital in the northeast region of the United States, it was observed that nurses were not completing their CAI professional development modules and were failing to meet continuous education requirements. This qualitative case study explored professional nurses’ perspectives regarding the usefulness of CAI as a mode of professional development. The conceptual frameworks used to guide this study were Davis’ theory of technology acceptance, and Knowles’s theory of andragogy. The research question explored how professional nurses perceived the usefulness of CAI to assimilate new learning. The participants in …

This manuscript highlights benefits of service-learning (SL) as a promising pedagogical approach to improving teaching and learning in college classrooms. Drawing on the collective experiences of integrating SL projects in university courses, the authors share a framework aimed at assisting faculty in higher education in designing, implementing, and evaluating SL projects across diverse higher education courses. A case example illustrating how SL projects can be infused in a graduate course is offered, and recommendations are provided for faculty who wish to integrate SL projects with the goal of improving teaching and learning in their college courses.

Peace, Love, And (Soul)Cialism: Function Of Teacher- Student Love In Collectivist Societal Education And Its Relationship To The Elimination Of African American Educational Underachievement, Nirel Jonesmitchell
CMC Senior Theses
Top researchers in the field of intimacy education signify that definitions of intimate connection—referring to a deep relationship with oneself, immediate circle, or humankind, more broadly—are identity dependent. Different countries and racial demographics, thus, conceptualize notions of solidarity, interdependence, and self-awareness distinctly. Without investigation, these discrepancies provoke division; attention, alternatively, has the power to induce the mitigation of educational achievement gaps in Latin America and domestically. Cuban notions of ‘legitimate’ relationships are contextualized by the political philosopher Jose Martí who delineated an ideological framework encouraging collectivism. This idea undergirds his contribution to the revolutionary Cuban literacy campaign: dialogical education. Despite …
Children’S Development And Crisis: Comparing Developmental Best Practices Against Aid Program Curricula, Martha Baker
Children’S Development And Crisis: Comparing Developmental Best Practices Against Aid Program Curricula, Martha Baker
CMC Senior Theses
Using the monitoring, evaluation and learning for adaptive management model (MEL4AM), this paper examines how international organizations translate productive criteria for early childhood development (ECD) into emergency response programming for children. Early childhood is a crucial developmental time in individual’s lives and adverse experiences undermine, among other things, language development, self-regulatory capabilities, and child-caregiver interactions. International aid organizations are operationalizing the research on ECD best practices into site-level programming. This thesis examines whether the developmental needs of these children in crisis are being met through these efforts and offers two in-depth case studies: Sesame Workshop’s intervention for Syrian refugee children …

This is an excerpt from my book, ‘Essential Learning Theories: The Human Dimension’ published by Rowman and Littlefield in 2021.
Disclaimer: The special education teachers I have had the privilege to work with over the years are making a difference lives of their students. However, they are often trapped in a system that is broken. This system puts limitations on what they are able to accomplish. In this chapter (article), I am referencing this larger system. I am not referencing any particular school, school district, university, or teacher preparation program.
A disability is not disorder or deficit; rather, it is …
Growing Green Minds: Implementation Of A School Garden & Nutrition Program For The Freedom Area School District In Rural Wisconsin, Marissa Schuh
Growing Green Minds: Implementation Of A School Garden & Nutrition Program For The Freedom Area School District In Rural Wisconsin, Marissa Schuh
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Most children in the U.S. consume too few fruits and vegetables which is putting them at risk to develop obesity and other lifestyle diseases. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that individuals should increase the amount and variety of fruits and vegetables consumed in order to prevent weight gain and other chronic diseases. Research shows that garden-based educational programs can increase children’s fruit and vegetable intake as well as change their preferences and attitudes towards eating and trying new fruits and vegetables. Incorporating a garden and nutrition curriculum into a school setting is an ideal opportunity to improve children’s …
The Subject-Centered Integrative Learning Model: A New Model For Teaching Occupational Therapy’S Distinct Value, Barb Hooper, Matthew Molineux, Wendy Wood
The Subject-Centered Integrative Learning Model: A New Model For Teaching Occupational Therapy’S Distinct Value, Barb Hooper, Matthew Molineux, Wendy Wood
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
The concept of occupation-centered education has been used to describe what programs do when they infuse occupation throughout an occupational therapy curriculum. In describing occupation-centered education, educators often describe the strategies they use to help students learn occupation, including courses about occupation, direct experience with occupation, cases and questions that connect biomedical sciences and health conditions to occupation, assignments that require students to infuse occupation into therapy, curriculum threads related to occupation, and many others. While each of these strategies is important, no conceptual model exists that defines occupation-centered education, elaborates its concepts and principles, and guides the development of …

Computer accessibility is defined in this context as the accessibility of a computer system to all people, regardless of disability type or severity of impairment. As developers we are taught how to build a table for any styling, but not taught how to make sure that table could be used by an individual with a visual impairment. Naively, we are sometimes under the impression that we don’t need to or even can’t solve the needs of all individuals when it came to common software, and boy are we wrong.
It is our responsibility and privilege as developers to create software …

Pathways To Success In Anatomy And Physiology At The Community College: The Role Of Prerequisite Courses, Staci B. Forgey, Mitchell R. Williams, Shana Pribesh
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
Gatekeeper courses such as Anatomy and Physiology are often referenced in discussions regarding the national shortage of persons in allied health professions. In an attempt to bolster access to STEM professions, some community colleges are mandating prerequisite courses such as Natural Sciences and/or General Biology for STEM gatekeeping courses. In this study, we examined which of these prerequisite courses helped students to pass Anatomy and Physiology and whether the courses are an additional barrier to STEM field completion. This was the first study to evaluate whether a prerequisite course was predictive of success in Anatomy and Physiology, and it contributes …
