Strategies And Algorithms Of Sudoku, Callie Weaver
Strategies And Algorithms Of Sudoku, Callie Weaver
Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers
This paper discusses different strategies for the game of Sudoku and how those strategies relate to other problem solving techniques while also attempting to use those other techniques in a way that improves the strategies for Sudoku. This includes a thorough analysis of the general algorithm and an algorithm that is formed by the Occupancy Theorem and Preemptive Sets. This paper also compares these algorithms that directly relate to Sudoku with algorithms to similar combinatorial problems such as the Traveling Salesman problem and more. With the study of game theory becoming more popular, these strategies have also been shown to …

Challenges To Learning And Teaching In Malaysia In The Time Of Covid-19, Rashid Ating
Research Publications (2016 to 2020)
Amid the outbreak of Covid-19, the Malaysian government under Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has announced two different economic stimulus packages. The first one is a total of RM250 billion ($57 billion) on March 27th 2020 (ASEAN Briefing, 2020a) and the second is a stimulus package of RM10 billion ($2.3 billion) on April 6th 2020 (ASEAN Briefing, 2020b). The Prihatin Rakyat Economic Stimulus program (PRIHATIN) broadly aims to provide social support in the form of cash incentives for marginalised households (MOF, 2020).

Unaddressed Challenges For The “Most Honest And Ethical Profession:” A Pilot Study Of Web-Based Learning Strategies To Prevent Moral Distress, Kelly Straight
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: Nurses and nurse practitioners (NPs) face greater responsibility to address the ethical challenges that present during the course of patient care, due to advances in medical technology and pharmaceutical innovation, and because of widening disparities within the U.S. healthcare system. These ethical questions, which arise during the course of routine patient care, are increasing in both number and complexity in nearly every patient care setting. Even with codified ethical standards, unresolved and/or ongoing ethical questions and dilemmas pose further issues such as the development of moral distress. This pilot project was designed to help NPs and other healthcare workers …
When Class Is Colorblind: A Race-Conscious Model For Cultural Capital Research In Education, Bedelia N. Richards
When Class Is Colorblind: A Race-Conscious Model For Cultural Capital Research In Education, Bedelia N. Richards
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Sociologists of education frequently draw on the cultural capital framework to explore the ways in which educational institutions perpetuate inequality in schools and the larger society. However, these studies adhere to a white centered “class-based master-narrative,” to legitimize and perpetuate the assumption that racial differences are secondary manifestations of class-based structures. The class-based master-narrative elevates a one-dimensional view of inequality as rooted primarily in class-based stratification and downplays the fact that the economic elites who inhabit these dominant social positions are predominantly white. In this essay, I propose a race-conscious framework to challenge the colorblind assumptions and deficit perspectives inherent …

“Pen Is Envy”: Education, Feminine Sexuality, And Fruitfulness In Christina Rossetti’S “Goblin Market” And “An Apple Gathering” And Margaret Atwood’S The Handmaid’S Tale And The Testaments, Hannah White
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The Victorian era was a time in which people were very much interested in morality and sinning, especially when it came to women’s sexuality. It was also time in which conversations about women and education often linked women to their bodies—even medical doctors during this era spoke of the dangerous consequences education might have on a woman’s reproductive capabilities. While men’s sexual transgressions were often viewed as a natural result of their being in the public sphere, women were expected to be the pure and domestic moral compass there to guide men that could not help but sin because of …

Adventism In East Africa: Were The Initial Mission Strategies Effective?, Christopher R. Mwashinga
Andrews University Seminary Student Journal
The Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) is one of the fastest-growing Christian denominations in the world. Studies show that the SDA Church in Africa in general and East Africa, in particular, has recorded tremendous growth since it was introduced in the region in the early 1900s. This article surveys the first fifty years of the beginning and development of the SDA Church in East African (1903–1953). It focuses on the three initial mission strategies employed by early Adventist missionaries to East Africa, including education, medical care, and publishing work. Early Adventist missionaries to East Africa established educational and medical institutions alongside …

Curriculum Coaches: Pre-Service Teachers Opinions And Perceptions Within The Field Of Education, Brooke Ann Mcintyre, Catherine Scott
Honors Theses
The role of a curriculum coach in the PK-12 school system is a valuable one; the curriculum coach can provide mentoring and instructional supports to new teachers as they enter the field. The importance of this aid can be easily overlooked, nonetheless, because teachers are often unaware of the type of support that is available to them. In this study, a survey was administered to preservice teacher education students at a liberal arts institution in the southeast to evaluate their perceptions of curriculum coaches and their role in the classroom. Findings are shared and implications discussed for both school systems …

An Investigation Of The Experiences Of New Teachers And Their Reasons To Stay In The Classroom, Jessa N. Mcentire
An Investigation Of The Experiences Of New Teachers And Their Reasons To Stay In The Classroom, Jessa N. Mcentire
Honors Theses
New teacher attrition rates have increased over the years. Twenty percent of new teachers will leave the profession after three years. That number increases to forty-four percent after five years of teaching. For those just entering the profession, these numbers can be daunting. The purpose of this study was to determine the reasons for this departure and what actions schools employ to help lessen this attrition rate. After screening four teachers to gain a general insight into their experiences, eight teachers with a similar educational background were selected for additional interviews. This study was intended to determine how much of …

Honors Theses
In a world of ever-advancing technology, it is imperative that young pre-health professionals are educated according to the most relevant research. One of the most fundamental, foundational concepts of health is genetics. This field is rapidly expanding, and quickly engraining itself into the realm of healthcare. Genetic testing and gene therapies, once subjects of science fiction, have become commonplace. It is more important than ever that health professionals have a concrete knowledge of genetics, and this begins with the proper education of pre-health students.
With this idea in mind, a laboratory protocol was designed for students of the Bisc 336 …

Education In Liberal Political Theories, Amy Cain
Education In Liberal Political Theories, Amy Cain
Honors Theses
This paper examines two sources of conflict within the literature on education in liberal political theories: the proper justifications for a state-mandated education and the necessary standard for education in a liberal state. After arguing that a liberal state must offer a child-centered justification for the universal mandate and uphold an equality standard of education, this paper proceeds to examine two common objections to such a system of compulsory education in a liberal state. This paper concludes that the perennial objections based upon concerns for familial rights and pluralism do not present a significant obstacle for incorporating a system of …

Proactive Prosocial Strategies Employed By First-Grade Teachers, Lisa M. Skiadas
Education Doctorate Dissertations
Primary students begin their school careers with widely varied skill sets in the areas of social and emotional competence, executive function, and self-regulation. However, many schools, like the one in this study, do not include social and emotional learning (SEL) in their curricula or tiered intervention frameworks. Students who struggle with basic classroom functions and behaviors do not receive the maximum benefit from academic instruction. Conversely, high levels of social and emotional competence have been linked to future academic success, financial and job security and better physical and mental health.
This investigation sought to identify proactive strategies used by three …

Q&A: A Career In Christian Higher Education: An Interview, Linda Gray
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
Much has changed in U.S. culture since the 1970s, requiring teachers to adjust their methods of reaching students who are markedly different from their parents’ generation. But through the decades, Christian educators have tried to demonstrate God’s love through caring, patience, knowledge, and commitment, and in a Christian institution, they also seek to bring a Christian worldview to their students. But if some students at Christian universities are not believers nor seekers and when students lack basic biblical knowledge, teachers in Christian institutions must adjust their teaching methods. Online teaching creates even more challenges as students and teachers can see …

Improving End-Of-Life Care On Navajo Through Education, Johanna G. Bahe
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
End-of-life care (EOLC) is an essential component of comprehensive healthcare and has been shown to improve the quality of life of patients and their families by preventing and relieving pain caused by physical, psychosocial, and spiritual complications. Many rural communities lack access to EOLC, specifically certified palliative and hospice services. The lack of this specialty in rural areas directly affects the experience of healthcare staff. The absence of education for rural healthcare staff and the importance of culturally sensitive care among indigenous people are key concepts in this study.
The purpose of this study was to measure the knowledge, confidence, …

Abstract
Objective The effective utilization of intern training for ophthalmology residency is undermined by its variability across postgraduate programs. As residency programs shift toward integrating the first postgraduate year (PGY-1) into the ophthalmology-training curriculum, there are no definitive guidelines to build upon.
Methods This is a retrospective cross-sectional study of new second postgraduate year (PGY-2) ophthalmology residents. Residents were surveyed in their first 2 months of ophthalmology training. Residents were asked to self-assess preparedness for ophthalmology based on their PGY-1 curriculum. A survey was composed and modified from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education's assessment of resident training. The …
