INTRODUCTION: As scholarship moves into the digital sphere, applicant and promotion and tenure (P&T) committee members lack formal guidance on evaluating the impact of digital scholarly work. The P&T process requires the appraisal of individual scholarly impact in comparison to scholars across institutions and disciplines. As dissemination methods evolve in the digital era, we must adapt traditional P&T processes to include emerging forms of digital scholarship.
METHODS: We conducted a blended, expert consensus procedure using a nominal group process to create a consensus document at the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors Academic Assembly on April 1, 2019.
RESULTS: We …

This study examined how TIME Magazine has visually represented and communicated ideas about education from TIME Magazine’s inception in 1923 through 2019. Drawing on theories of visual culture and social semiotic approaches to multimodality, the researchers conducted a qualitative multimodal content analysis of 115 covers that featured content related to education and schooling. The findings included (a) names and places are used to suggest authority, power, or relevance in education circles; (b) learning and schooling are presented as having not changed over time; (c) overgeneralized and metonymic representations can stand for broad categories of education stakeholders; (d) schools are presented …

Improving Palliative And Hospice Knowledge Among Nurses In A Long-Term Care Facility., Kelly Rae Smith
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: Early referral and implementation of palliative best-practices in patients with chronic diseases and at the end-of-life (EOL) significantly decreases patient symptom burden, increases quality-of-life, contributes to patient and family satisfaction with care, and reduces healthcare costs. Nurses in long-term care (LTC) are poised to help identify patients appropriate for referral, to provide quality palliative and EOL care, but lack adequate knowledge. Objectives: To determine if a short one-on-one or two-on-one palliative and hospice educational offering can improve (a) knowledge of best-practice palliative and hospice care symptom management techniques (b) the ability of nurses to identify patients appropriate for hospice …
Hepatitis A Educational Program In Food Service Workers., Katherine Barker
Hepatitis A Educational Program In Food Service Workers., Katherine Barker
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Louisville, KY was affected by a significant outbreak of Hepatitis A in 2017-2018. Kentucky consisted of one-third of the national deaths. The outbreak influenced not only human mortality but had an economic impact on the food service industry. Many restaurants were affected, and some were forced to close due to Hepatitis A outbreaks. To address this issues, a two-step educational process was designed for management to gain understanding of hepatitis A content. The first step was to survey staff (kitchen staff, waiters/waitress, busier, etc.) to determine the compliance rate and variables that influence the compliance rate for vaccination of Hepatitis …

Pediatric Asthma, Monica Stricklin
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Effective management of asthma will improve pediatric patient quality of life. This may be achieved through the prevention of asthma exacerbations by continuous pediatric and guardian/parent education to proper inhaler technique, appropriate medication management and the avoidance of environmental triggers. These modalities may prevent trips to the emergency department, hospital admissions and the pediatric patient can avoid missing days from school.

Preoperative Opioid Education: Total Knee And Total Hip Arthroplasty., Brittany Durbin
Preoperative Opioid Education: Total Knee And Total Hip Arthroplasty., Brittany Durbin
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Opioids are commonly prescribed for the treatment of acute pain symptoms such as surgical pain. The United States is struggling to deal with abuse, misuse, and accidental death associated with prescription opioids. Lack of knowledge regarding safe opioid use is partly to blame for this crisis. The purpose of this evidence-based quality improvement project is to implement a dual-modality (written and spoken) opioid educational intervention to both health care providers and patients. Intended outcomes include increased opioid knowledge for providers yielding more effective opioid education to patients. A pre- and post-test design was used to evaluate provider knowledge and intent …

Education Module For Serotonin Syndrome With 24-Hour Dose Monitoring Intervention., Jonathon Blake Hicks
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: Serotonin Syndrome (SS) is recognized by a combination of mental status changes, neuromuscular hyperactivity, and autonomic hyperactivity (Volpi-Abadie, Kaye, & Kaye, 2013). Despite the severity and commonality of SS, it is an under reported and an under treated condition (Boyer, 2018). The purpose of this project was to 1) implement an education module on SS using a pretest and posttest design to increase LTC staff knowledge, and 2) evaluate the effectiveness (e.g., confidence level, satisfaction) of the intervention among nursing staff. Method: An education module was implemented focusing on recognizing and treating SS in aging adults. A pretest-posttest design …
Breastfeeding Education In The Postpartum Period., Kiersten Proctor
Breastfeeding Education In The Postpartum Period., Kiersten Proctor
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Breastmilk is the best source of nutrients for an infant, yet many mother-infant dyads do not sustain breastfeeding past initiation. Breastfeeding education and support offered to the motherinfant dyad in the postpartum period have the potential to increase maternal breastfeeding selfefficacy, and attribute to a longer duration of breastfeeding. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement project was to implement breastfeeding education and support in the postpartum period to mothers who have initiated and maintained breastfeeding by the time of the newborn well-child check, occurring at two to eight days postpartum. This project aimed to increase …

Sepsis Screening Education, Brittany R. Horn
Sepsis Screening Education, Brittany R. Horn
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project
Sepsis is a significant burden to the healthcare field with 1.7 million Americans annually diagnosed with this condition. Earlier diagnosis and treatment are the most effective ways of reducing morbidity and mortality related to sepsis. The current sepsis screening tool in place at Stormont-Vail Hospital, in Topeka, Kansas, is the systemic inflammatory response (SIRS) criteria; however, this screening tool has proven to be less effective than other screening tools available. The screening tools proven more effective than the SIRS criteria, are the quick sequential organ failure assessment (qSOFA) and the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA). For this project, nursing staff …
The Effects Of Racialization On Sikhs In America: An Intersectional Approach, Harsirjan K. Roopra
The Effects Of Racialization On Sikhs In America: An Intersectional Approach, Harsirjan K. Roopra
Senior Theses
Sikhs have been largely ignored in the literature surrounding social justice and religious tolerance. The many pressures Sikhs face, and the social assumptions that lead to them, must be brought into the broader conversation on these issues so that educators and politicians might help support the well-being of the Sikh community. Sikh identity has been misinterpreted and redefined in modern day American society. The lack of cultural and religious literacy of many Americans, coupled with Sikhs’ distinct visible identity, has led to xenophobic violence against Sikhs since their arrival in the U.S. more than a century ago. The root of …

“Oh no. Could I borrow a tampon or pad?” These (or similar) words are familiar to almost everyone who has ever had a period. Even for adults, menstruation can at times be a challenge. For some schoolchildren, it can be an insurmountable obstacle to receiving an education. Students are subject to constant observation by classmates and teachers; they may not have autonomous access to a bathroom during the school day; or they may not be able to afford menstrual products. They may experience menstruation-related peer harassment, restrictive school policies, a lack of access to menstrual products, and inadequate menstruation-related education. …

Spoken Language Interpreters Andsigned Language Interpreters: Towards Cross-Fertilization, Daniel Gile, Jemina M. Napier
International Journal of Interpreter Education
This commentary aims to give an overview of developments in the related fields of spoken and signed language interpreting, with consideration given to professionalization, standards, education and training, and research. We base our discussion on our observations of the changing nature of the sister professions over the years, as the two related fields become more closely aligned. We propose that spoken and signed language interpreters can work more closely together to promote more cross-fertilization in interpreting studies.

Exploring Response To Intervention: How Are We Narrowing The Gap For Tier 3 Minority Learners?, Kristi Baker
Teaching and Learning Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to 1) analyze the relationship between RTI tier of intervention, minority status, and reading growth and 2) explore school level factors that might explain differential growth of minority students in Tier 3 relative to their peers. I used the lens of Critical Race Theory in Education to explore the reading growth of minority students in Tier 3 relative to their peers which included non-minority students in Tier 3 as well as minority and non-minority students in Tier 1. I sampled a total of 1,002 minority and non-minority elementary students from three schools in …
Making The Case For The Systematic Observation Of Language And Reading: A Reading Comprehension Measure Inclusive Of Students With Disabilities, Carlin Conner
Teaching and Learning Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this literature synthesis is to examine the empirical literature on comprehension measures used in studies of reading interventions for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and low IQ. Sixteen studies met inclusion criteria for this review. All studies were experimental, included a measure of reading comprehension, and sampled participants with ASD and low IQ (i.e., at least one standard deviation below the mean). The focus of this synthesis is on the comprehension measures used in the interventions, including type of measure and comprehension construct assessed through the measure. Results indicate that most of the studies included measures …

Researchers, Instructors, & Staff Scholarship
In this chapter, the authors describe the learning experience and goals of a class assignment to write content for Wikipedia about women in science and technology fields. The authors, a university professor and two librarians, collaboratively developed this assignment to allow students to engage in rigorous research and contribute to the visibility of women scientists by writing content for the web. The authors chose the Wikipedia platform as the means to make the students work openly available because of its ubiquity and the potential for student work to make an important impact. The assignment, used in two iterations of the …

The Effectiveness Of Patient Education Utilizing The Teach-Back Method To Improve Patient Satisfaction, Gladys Cajucom Apuli
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this Evidence-Based Project is to determine the effectiveness of using “teach-back” method in giving education to patients receiving chemotherapy and how this method can increase patient satisfaction with understanding of medication action and side effects. Teach-back method is a way of checking patient’s understanding by asking them to state in their own words the information about their health. It is a way to confirm that the explanations given by their provider is understood. Teach-back method can improve patient’s understanding and adherence, decrease call backs and cancelled appointments. This project was developed to improve the organization’s patient satisfaction …

Center for Policy Research
We provide new evidence on the effect of adolescent health behaviors/outcomes (obesity, depression, smoking, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)) on schooling attainment using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. We take two different approaches to deal with omitted variable bias and reverse causality. Our first approach attends to the issue of reverse causality by using health polygenic scores (PGSs) as proxies for actual adolescent health. Second, we estimate the effect of adolescent health using sibling fixed-effects models that control for unmeasured genetic and family factors shared by siblings. We use the PGSs as additional controls in …
Longer-Term Impact And Efficacy Of Nebraska's In-School Elementary Grades Savings Programs, Jennifer Davidson
Longer-Term Impact And Efficacy Of Nebraska's In-School Elementary Grades Savings Programs, Jennifer Davidson
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
The prevalence of in-school savings programs is widespread. Research on program efficacy is not. This mixed-methods case study contributes to the gap in the research literature. The study examined the in-school savings program, conducted in the elementary grades, from multiple perspectives. The first perspective was a longitudinal one that assessed high school student financial behaviors and evaluated if there were any lasting effects from participation in the program when they were in elementary school. The second perspective was an educational one that assessed what elementary school teachers and administrators who implemented the programs thought about the benefits of the program. …

Opportunities And Challenges –The Next 5 Years Of A Service Dedicated To The Medical Management Of Neurosurgical Patients, Rene Daniel, Catriona Mcdonald Harrop
JHN Journal
Neurosurgery hospitalists will continue to be closely involved in the management of patients which undergo neurosurgery. In the first article, we discuss the tremendous potential of the service for improving the care for neurosurgical patients at Jefferson. We highlight the interactions with other services and the areas for potential growth. Further, we emphasize the need for constant feedback, which is necessary to improve the care provided by FHS.
In the second part of the article, we highlight the potential impact of FHS beyond the Jefferson Hospitals in Center City of Philadelphia, to other hospitals within the Jefferson network, and beyond …
