Multicultural Competence Among Teachers In Indiana, Kevin Rowe Jan 2022

Multicultural Competence Among Teachers In Indiana, Kevin Rowe

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Classrooms continue to become more diverse, and the overall demands on educators have expanded (Howe & Lisi, 2020). These changes require teachers to engage in cross-cultural interactions, to adapt instructional strategies, to be aware of the mental health states of young people, and to be more active in social justice issues (Baldridge, 2014; Hahl & Lofstrom, 2016; Henderson et al., 2019). If adjustments are not made, individuals who are part of a minority population may be in danger of being mislabeled in, misguided through, or excluded from their educational pursuits (Akamatsu, 2000; Chao, 2013; Gargiulo, 2007; Howe & Lisi, 2020; …

Communication 4 All: A Movement To Gain Communication For Non-Speaking Students With Autism, Elizabeth Bonker Jan 2022

Communication 4 All: A Movement To Gain Communication For Non-Speaking Students With Autism, Elizabeth Bonker

Honors Program Theses

Communication is a basic human right and the lack of access to communication for non-speaking students is a civil rights issue. Autism affects 1% of the world’s population across all racial and socioeconomic groups. Approximately 40% of autistics, 31 million people, are unable to speak. Without communication, non-speaking children are labeled “low functioning” and not educated. COMMUNICATION 4 ALL is my social innovation to ensure every child has a means to fully communicate in school. Informed by the Civil Rights and Disability Rights Movements, my thesis analyzes the current dynamics in non-speaking autism including the economic cost, communication methods, educational …

Provider education has the ability to improve provider knowledge of palliative care for heart failure patients. A brief education session was given to hospital providers in an acute care setting to evaluate the benefits of provider education on palliative care utilization for heart failure patients. Findings included improved provider confidence in referring heart failure patients to palliative care. …

Improving Parent/Guardian Awareness Of Kindergarten Entry Health Requirements, Paul Prince Jan 2022

Improving Parent/Guardian Awareness Of Kindergarten Entry Health Requirements, Paul Prince

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Ensuring students meet health requirements to enter Kindergarten is a time-consuming process. By improving education to parents to help them discern differences between PreK and Kindergarten requirements, the health of students can be optimized and the time burden for administrators and school nurses can be reduced. There is evidence that parents/guardians better respond to non-written material delivered through push notification or email. A 5-minute video presentation was distributed to 24 parents/guardians of PreK students. Project impact was measured through a pre/post survey evaluating levels of confidence in child readiness for Kindergarten. Results identified that parent/guardian confidence was increased after education. …

Nursing Education For Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections In Intensive Care Units, Carren Sandra Mullings

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Central line associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs) are the most acquired hospital infection in the United States. CLABSI is caused by bacteria that enter the bloodstream through a central line. In the United States, CLABSI has a mortality rate of 18%, and every year 250,000 people are infected. Of these, 30,000 patients die due to CLABSI infections, hospital stays are prolonged, and hospital costs are increased. Patients in an intensive care unit (ICU) are more exposed to CLABSI because of procedures that break tissues and skin, such as the insertion of a central line. A gap in practice was identified …

Rhode Island has long hosted refugees from around the world. Schools in RI, particularly those in Providence, currently enroll hundreds of refugee youth. After spending a semester conducting research and teaching in a school that serves refugee youth, it became clear that explicit teacher training about this population rarely occurs. This guide seeks to provide resources in which to address this need.

At Roger Williams University, I teach courses in our Education programs about race, class, and culture. My professional research centers on the same topics. While on sabbatical, I created several documents for the principal I worked with, to …

Mind The Gap: Addressing The Disproportionate Rate Of Discipline Of Black Students In The Public Education System, Sophia Mcconnell

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

Within public education, it has been shown that there is a disproportionate rate of discipline between Black and White students. A literature review was conducted to identify prevailing themes as to why this gap occurs, what factors maintain it, and what can educators do to reduce it. Several themes were found and are detailed in this paper in the following order: First, several studies have debunked the previously held idea that low socioeconomic status and the Differential Involvement theory could be explanations for the disproportionate rate of discipline. Second, there are two leading factors, among many others, that maintain the …

Family Factors In Career Decisions To Enter Education Amongst Black Urban Millennials, Christian Jacobs

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe interactions a student has with a teacher help form their relationship with the educational experience. Importantly, a lack of representation can greatly impact the future impression of oneself and the world. For students of color, the balance of teachers who represent their ethnic and cultural diversity in the education field is greatly skewed toward White educators. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study, which was rooted in the self-determination theory, was to examine if and to what extent various factors, including parental, household, environmental, gender, and ethnicity impact Black millennials’ decision to go into the educational field. Participant criteria …

Gestational Weight Gain, Level Of Education, And Infant Mortality Among African American Women, George Lee Amanambu

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Abstract

African American (AA) women in Mississippi have a higher burden of infant mortality, especially those with low income and educational levels, as compared to other regions of the country. However, it is unknown if abnormal gestation weight gain (GWG) is contributing to this increased burden. This quantitative cross-sectional study examined the association between GWG (25-35lbs), level of education, income, and infant mortality among AA women with normal prepregnancy body weight who were between 30 to 47 years old in the state of Mississippi from 2016 to 2018. Biopsychosocial and ecosocial models were used as the theoretical foundation to design …

Property Law—The Importance Of Intellectual Property Education In A Knowledge Economy, John J. Diffley, Diane R. Sabato, Richard H. Kosakowski

Western New England Law Review

Entrepreneurs, inventors, and innovators can be faced with an overwhelming amount of information and guidance when they plan their business startup. One area that is often neglected is the business’s intellectual property. In fact, it is critical to attend to the protection of IP early in the startup process. Entrepreneurs and others need to know what to protect, as well as when and how to protect it.

In the United States, IP accounts for thirty-eight percent of Gross Domestic Product, while IP and other intangible assets make up ninety percent of the market value of all S&P 500 companies. Increasingly, …

Andragogy And Leadership Development In Entry-Level Doctoral Occupational Therapy Education, Tracey Elaine Recigno

Dissertations and Theses

Leadership development is critical for occupational therapy practitioners to be effective in their varied roles and ultimately is necessary for the sustainability of the occupational therapy profession. Occupational therapy education needs to be the starting point for developing a leadership identity. Best practices in leadership development require that experiences are contextualized and provide opportunities for active learning and reflective practices, yet there is minimal research to understand how occupational therapy educators teach this concept. This dissertation sought to first describe leadership development in occupational therapy and then describe how occupational therapy educators approach leadership education using adult learning principles. The …

Circular Pedagogy For Smart, Inclusive And Sustainable Education, Lia Pop, Nadia Barkoczi, Lucia Morales, Jon-Hans Coetzer, Claudia Marian, Patrick Flynn

Working Papers

Higher education institutions seem to be engaged in a reactive process when thinking about education for sustainable development, instead of being proactive. A every stage, educational models remain very limited to specific goals and agendas driven by the fad of the moment and without articulating a sustainable educational model that we argue should be uttered within the concepts of intercultural competencies, smart, inclusive, and sustainable education where learners engage on a circular learning process as captured by the circular pedagogy for higher education. If the academic community is serious about driving actions that help us to enact change and impact …

Our Silence Will Not Protect Us . . . And Neither Will J. Edgar Hoover: Reclaiming Critical Race Theory Under The New Mccarthyism, Christina Hsu Accomando, Kristin J. Anderson

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

The right-wing attack against critical race theory is the latest manufactured panic designed to whip up supporters of a party beholden to Donald Trump. Since late 2020, hundreds of measures have been introduced across the U.S. to ban antiracism education, critical race theory, the 1619 Project, and any understanding of racism as systemic and embedded in U.S. history and law. While an understandable reaction of educators is to declare that they are not teaching critical race theory, our position is to reclaim critical race theory for the powerful lens it offers in understanding the history of the U.S., the protracted …

Scholarly Publications

During the spring of 2020 through the spring of 2021 of the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the courses at the Florida State University College of Law were moved to Zoom in order to be taught remotely. This transition was painful and inadequate for many of the traditional-style law school courses. However, FSU's International Trade Transactions course, which has operated around a digitized transactional world for twenty years, smoothly transitioned to remote learning. As the teacher of this course, I would like to explore what students learn in that transactional world, and also how that learning helps the students after law …
