Interventions To Support Teen Mothers In California And Reduce The Disparities Related To The Effects Of Teen Pregnancy, Shanelle Christine Sanchez
Master's Projects and Capstones
The US teen birth rate has slowly been declining; however, teenage pregnancy is still prevalent. In 2018 the US teen birth rate was 17.4 births per 1,000 girls aged 15-19 years, totaling 179,871 births (National Vital Statistic Report). California’s most recent birth rate was 13.6 births per 1,000 girls aged 15-19 years in 2020 (CDC, 2020). Few studies focus on teen mothers’ health, life needs, and outcomes as a result of adolescent pregnancy and subsequently, adolescent parenting. Additionally, few studies have looked at the cultural differences and views of adolescent pregnancy and parenting within the Hispanic population, which are greatly …

Culturally Responsive Teaching As A Way To Narrow The Opportunity Gap For African American Students, Emily Bazini
Culturally Responsive Teaching As A Way To Narrow The Opportunity Gap For African American Students, Emily Bazini
Masters Projects
Research reiterates the importance of implementing culturally responsive teaching and learning. Today, African American students and their families are in critical need for schools and teachers to support and implement characteristics of culturally responsive teaching and learning. The regular, standard curriculum is not benefitting African American students, as they are unable to make personal connections to their learning. In order to fully meet the needs of African American students, it is imperative that the teaching methods and the curriculum taught incorporate the cultural background and home lives of these students. It is important to note that the teaching workforce is …

Mathematics Funds Of Knowledge Survey: A Development And Validation Study, Tiffini Pruitt-Britton
Teaching and Learning Theses and Dissertations
“Real-world” contextualization of mathematics is derived from curriculum and educator experiences which lean heavily into White middle-class contexts which are not reflective of many U.S. schools. Using students’ frames of knowledge with which they are interested or familiar promotes an enhanced and more engaging learning experience in the mathematics classroom.
This dissertation outlines the development and validation of an instrument that collects and quantifies students’ mathematics funds of knowledge in various areas. This study not only provides a new validated instrument for practitioner and researcher use but contributes to the field regarding the importance of the authentic connection between student …
Acceptance Finds A Way: How To Teach And Use Evolution's Explanatory Power, Daniel George Ferguson
Acceptance Finds A Way: How To Teach And Use Evolution's Explanatory Power, Daniel George Ferguson
Theses and Dissertations
The theory of evolution is the central combing theory that brings together all the tenets of biology that bring about a solid understanding of life. It is also one of the most controversial scientific theories of all time and is widely rejected by about 40% of the general public in the United States. One of the biggest reasons for low evolution acceptance is the perceived conflict between evolution and religious beliefs. Educators and researchers have been working hard to improve how we teach evolution in the classroom; some methods, such as focusing on evolution knowledge, have shown to be mixed. …

Impacts Of Granite Quarrying: The Case Of Subsistence Farmers In The São Pedro River Valley, Isabelle Poupard Santizo
Impacts Of Granite Quarrying: The Case Of Subsistence Farmers In The São Pedro River Valley, Isabelle Poupard Santizo
Theses & Dissertations
Granite quarrying constitutes an occupational hazard that compromises workers’ health, destroys the environment and negatively affects nearby communities (Azevedo et al., 2020; Ibrahim et al., 2019; Oktriani, Darmajanti, & Soesilo, 2017; Shaik et al., 2015). But the demand for granite and other decorative stones continues to grow (Gupta, 2018). Despite a decrease in imports/exports due to Covid-19 (Alves et al., 2020), today Brazil remains the number 1 granite exporter to the United States (US Geological Survey, 2021). In the last 30 years, the extraction of granite in Brazil has been continuous, particularly in the states of Espírito Santo (ES) and …

A Predictive Model Of Completion At Mississippi’S Community Colleges, Richard Baker
Dissertations
In the 2020 American presidential election and throughout the time since, the discussion of free community college continues to raise its head in the present political landscape in the United States. As the recognition of the contribution of community colleges to the overall educational level of the country grows, increased focus is going to be placed on how efficient and effective these two-year institutions are.
This research expands the body of knowledge by combining Resource Dependency Theory (RDT) and Astin’s Input-Environment-Output (IEO) model into an educational production function as defined by Bowles (1970). Neither RDT nor IEO is complete on …

Interprofessional Education – Occupational Therapy And Eating Disord, Alexis Namyak
Interprofessional Education – Occupational Therapy And Eating Disord, Alexis Namyak
Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects
Living with an eating disorder (ED) can strip an individual from experiencing a meaningful life engaging in occupations, tasks, habits, rituals, routines, and roles that were once familiar to oneself prior to their diagnosis. Having an ED can lead to negative behaviors that become maladaptive and obsessive (Wagenfeld & Olson, 2017). Typical treatment for individuals with EDs includes members on an interprofessional (IP) team composed of a primary care physician (PCP), nutritionist, and a mental health professional (Walsh et al., 2000). However, another professional, an occupational therapist (OT), should be included throughout treatment due to their unique contribution to address …

The Right To Research In Africa: Making African Copyright Whole, Desmond O. Oriakhogba
Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series
The imbalance existing within the African copyright ecosystem in relation to access to information for research and education became more prominent during the COVID-19 pandemic. As teaching, learning and research inevitably occur on digital platforms, learners and researchers continue to grapple with the challenges of accessing materials owing largely to the protection of these resources under copyright law. Similarly, African libraries and knowledge curators found themselves ill-equip to perform their role of enabling access to information. To create the balance, therefore, there is a dire need for the recalibration of the African copyright system from the perspective of human rights …

Study Of Undergraduate Interior Design Student Outcomes Compared To Industry Professional Expectations, Rachel Lantz
Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
Interior design undergraduate programs must continually address current software available as drafting and modeling platforms. In addition to preparing students to successfully use these programs, educators also have to consider the creative design process and accreditation standards set to ensure students complete their undergraduate degree prepared for a career in interior design. A concern many design faculty share is what technology, including hardware, software, and apps to feature and how to properly implement those technologies into the design curriculum.
This research project aims to review and evaluate criteria for interior design student work to determine if the outcomes match expectations …

Examining Introductory Computer Science Student Cognition When Testing Software Under Different Test Adequacy Criteria, Austin Shin
Master's Theses
The ability to test software is invaluable in all areas of computer science, but it is often neglected in computer science curricula. Test adequacy criteria (TAC), tools that measure the effectiveness of a test suite, have been used as aids to improve software testing teaching practices, but little is known about how students respond to them. Studies have examined the cognitive processes of students programming and professional developers writing tests, but none have investigated how student testers test with TAC. If we are to improve how they are used in the classroom, we must start by understanding the different ways …

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
This project is about positivity and its impact on education and creativity. This Master's Project in Creative and Change Leadership is aimed to investigate, comprehend, and apply positively in the fields of creativity and learning. Our learning and creativity suffer when we lack positivity. One may even argue that without positivity, our lives deteriorate. My objective is to cultivate positivity in both my personal and professional lives, thus transforming myself into an unconsciously talented individual.
