You Have The Right To Remain Uneducated: The Role Of Lobbying In Subverting Anti-Racist Curricula, Liam Martin

Washington Semester Program

This research paper seeks to explore the relationship between professional political actors and the subject of racism in primary education curricula, specifically in areas with prominent anti-CRT movements. Synthesizing these ideas together, the fully formed research question guiding the development of this paper reads as follows: how does the lobbying industry impact the development of primary education curricula in the United States on the subjects of race and racism, specifically in reference to anti-CRT activism? The extant literature on topics of racism, the institution of lobbying, and primary education in America, led to the development of the following thesis …

Uplifting An Invisible Population: How We Can Combine Psychology And Policy To Improve The Educational And Mental Health Outcomes Of Homeless Youth, Melissa Hamilton May 2023

Uplifting An Invisible Population: How We Can Combine Psychology And Policy To Improve The Educational And Mental Health Outcomes Of Homeless Youth, Melissa Hamilton

Washington Semester Program

The goal of this thesis is to a) explain why homeless youth are frequently linked to poor mental health and education outcomes, and b) offer evidence-based suggestions that ought to be considered when developing any intervention aiming to improve the education and mental health of homeless youth. To accomplish this, prominent theories in both the psychology (ex: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs) and political science (ex: failed implementation of the McKinney-Vento Act) fields that pertain to student homelessness were reviewed, and a comparative analysis of existing intervention models was conducted. Three key trends were identified across successful homeless youth intervention models …

Recognizing The Unique Health Care Needs Of Pregnant Afghan Refugees, Catherine Mcelroy May 2023

Recognizing The Unique Health Care Needs Of Pregnant Afghan Refugees, Catherine Mcelroy

Senior Honors Theses

Healthcare providers in the US, specifically in areas of high refugee resettlement, have recently been overwhelmed by the recent influx of Afghanistan refugees. This increased demand has exposed the lack of culturally competent care that healthcare workers are able to provide, leading to the question: How can healthcare providers in the United States (US) recognize the unique health care needs of pregnant Afghan refugees? This research paper addresses the question through the collection of previous research surrounding medical care for pregnant Afghan refugees already in databases. First, background information was obtained about the situation from which pregnant Afghan women are …

The Bible In Full Color: A High School Bible Study On The Inductive Bible Study Method, Margaret Gregory May 2023

The Bible In Full Color: A High School Bible Study On The Inductive Bible Study Method, Margaret Gregory

Senior Honors Theses

Modern Christianity is saturated with Bible studies for students. However, a crucial skill the Christian student needs to learn – how to study the Bible independently – is a topic difficult to find in contemporary youth Bible study curricula. While there is a wealth of biblically sound, helpful Bible studies that students can benefit from, it is essential that students do not remain dependent on these resources. One goal for youth ministry leaders is that their students graduate high school with the knowledge and tools they need to interpret the Scriptures for themselves correctly. The creative thesis will be an …

The Utilization Of Recorded Read Alouds By Teachers In Kindergarten Through Sixth Grade, Kira Hart

Curriculum and Instruction Undergraduate Honors Theses

In March of 2020, schools in the United States turned to virtual instruction due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Recorded read alouds flooded the internet during this time (Shedrow & Stoetzel, 2021). Now that school is back in person, the internet remains full of these recorded read alouds. The purpose of this study is to examine the utilization of recorded read alouds as an instructional practice by kindergarten through sixth grade teachers within in-person classrooms. This study also determines whether the use of a recorded read aloud by teachers has changed following COVID-19 and the purposes recorded read alouds serve. Research …

Students in the high school classroom environment sample completed a dual credit English 101 course in a high school classroom located in an ECHS, taught by a high school teacher who had been credentialed by the partnering community/technical …

Improving Breastfeeding Rates In A Rural And Medically Underserved Community, Kaylie D. Waters May 2023

Improving Breastfeeding Rates In A Rural And Medically Underserved Community, Kaylie D. Waters

Masters Projects

Background: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports national breastfeeding rates that are inconsistent with the recommendation of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life (CDC, 2020). The rate of infants receiving any breastmilk by six months of age in a rural Midwest County is only 16% in contrast to 55% nationally (CDC, 2020; XXXXX, 2021). This discrepancy was addressed by evaluating breastfeeding status in that Midwest community followed by strategies to improve breastfeeding rates.

Methods: A multi-intervention quality improvement project was implemented using the SEIPS framework. The project evaluated the effectiveness of documenting breastfeeding status in …

Children’s television is proven to be an effective instrument for educational material for young age groups and can be utilized to teach social awareness, traditional educational content, and about worldly issues. Highly successful shows for varying adolescent ages, such as Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow, and Bill Nye the Science Guy, exist for the sole purpose of increasing young viewers’ cognition and knowledge. Differing formats are used to convey educational content, such as narrative and expository structures, depending on the material and target age group. This project will develop the script for a children’s television show in the expository format that …

Mental Health Education Protocol For Staff Members In An Inpatient Rehabilitation Center, Charles Nicholas Salvatera May 2023

Mental Health Education Protocol For Staff Members In An Inpatient Rehabilitation Center, Charles Nicholas Salvatera

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Mental health illnesses have a significant impact on the lives of individuals and society. Despite the availability of effective treatments, many people with psychosocial issues or cognitive impairments do not receive the right care. This highlights the importance of timely care and effective help-seeking opportunities. Increased mental health literacy and supportive behaviors in the social networks of people with mental health disorders can be achieved by providing hospital staff with education on mental health disorders. It is believed that improvements in these areas increase the likelihood that people will seek effective assistance. When healthcare providers are educated about mental health …

History Doesn’T Repeat Itself, But Often Rhymes: An Analysis And Extension Of Models Influencing Special Education, Rebecca Owens May 2023

History Doesn’T Repeat Itself, But Often Rhymes: An Analysis And Extension Of Models Influencing Special Education, Rebecca Owens

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The American special education system is largely hailed as a beacon for inclusion and support of students with disabilities, but was developed on the back of a deep, complicated history of isolation, fear, and ignorance. This historical analysis examines special education in the context of parallel-developing models of how those with disabilities are perceived and treated in the United States. Rather than juxtaposing the widely-discussed models of disability (moral, medical, and social) with the development of special education, I argue that they are consistent with a wave pattern, initially proposed by disability scholar and advocate Wolfensberger (1969), that traces the …

Improving Workers’ Effectiveness When Working With Unhoused Individuals, Danika J. Bralek May 2023

Improving Workers’ Effectiveness When Working With Unhoused Individuals, Danika J. Bralek

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

When volunteering with individuals without housing, volunteers may not know what to expect or how to act when assisting this population. Without proper preparation, these volunteers may end up further marginalizing the population they are working with, putting themselves in danger, or failing to assist these human beings. When volunteers know more about how to assist these individuals in need, they can properly manage each client’s case and assist them in receiving proper aid. In order to address preparedness for volunteers working with these vulnerable populations, I have created an instructional video addressing proper rapport building, understanding needs and correct …

Disability Awareness Seminar For Students: The Importance Of Accommodations, Claire Mena May 2023

Disability Awareness Seminar For Students: The Importance Of Accommodations, Claire Mena

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many school age children have not yet learned about disabilities. Without an awareness of disabilities, children may inadvertently insult or misunderstand their peers with disabilities. With disability awareness education, these kids can be more accepting and welcoming to their peers with disabilities. To address this issue, I have created a one-day lesson to teach disability awareness to first to fourth graders from the migrant after school program, at Santa Rita Elementary School in Salinas, California.

Breaking The Silence: What Isn't Being Said About Grieving Students, Robin Farian May 2023

Breaking The Silence: What Isn't Being Said About Grieving Students, Robin Farian

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The focus issue addressed in this Capstone Project is how well teachers are trained to support a student who is grieving. This is an important issue for teachers because a student who is grieving is in a very vulnerable place, and the way a teacher responds can be very beneficial or detrimental to the student. An argument is made that teachers should be better prepared for a situation where a student is struggling with grief. Considerations of the issue should include the perspectives of teachers who have experience teaching grieving students. Three action options emerged from an analysis of the …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This essay will analyze and look into the issue in K-12 education where there is little representation of Chicanx students and a little talk about their culture, history, and novels to which they can relate. This essay will examine why Chicanx writers and books do not remain in the K-12 curriculum and how we can fix this. To answer the following questions and find a solution, I will examine the history of Chicanx students' treatment in the educational system. I will also create a lesson plan catered to middle school/high school Chicanx students in which they will be able to …

Better Budtender Training, Vincent Mcdonald Castillo

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

A survey conducted by the cannabis education program in the Monterey County Health Department (MCHD) concluded that around 57% of users in the county do not feel educated enough in the subject to form their own educated opinions about cannabis use (Cannabis Education Survey 2022). The MCHD decided to address this concern by collaborating with local dispensaries to provide an educational course in video form for budtenders. This video provides factual information on consumption methods, how differently they may affect people and the recommended time to wait before operating a vehicle. Following this education, consumers of cannabis will have reliable …

Bringing Awareness Of Non-Traditional Family Structures To Elementary Education, Britney Itzel Melendez May 2023

Bringing Awareness Of Non-Traditional Family Structures To Elementary Education, Britney Itzel Melendez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many elementary school students lack awareness of family diversity. When students lack an awareness of family diversity, they may develop prejudices, may inadvertently insult their peers, and even demonstrate intolerant attitudes towards people of different types of families. When elementary school students become aware of family diversity, they are more inclusive and may develop a broader perspective about the world. In order to address the lack of awareness of family diversity among elementary school children, I have developed a two-day lesson on family diversity for second graders at Bardin Elementary School in Salinas, California.

Increasing Curriculum On Emotions And Emotional Regulation In Elementary School Children, Sindy Navarro Pineda May 2023

Increasing Curriculum On Emotions And Emotional Regulation In Elementary School Children, Sindy Navarro Pineda

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Schooling and education plays a pivotal role in a child’s learning and in their socio-emotional development. However, elementary school children are not receiving enough curriculum on emotions and emotional regulation. It is crucial for a child to have the ability to identify and express their emotions, as well as the ability to self-regulate. To address the lack of curriculum surrounding the identification of emotions and emotional regulation, I created a two-day lesson plan about identifying emotions, and ways to regulate emotions, and delivered it to the kindergarteners and first graders of the after school program at Oasis Charter Public School …

Gender, Personality, And Cognitive Resilience Against Early-Life Disadvantage, Joseph L. Saenz, Sadaf Arefi Milani, Silvia Mejia-Arango

School of Medicine Publications

Objectives: Early-life disadvantage (ELD) relates to lower late-life cognition. However, personality factors, including having an internal locus of control (LOC) or a conscientious personality, relate to resilience and effective stress coping. We explore whether personality factors convey resilience against the negative effects of ELD on cognition, by gender, in Mexico.

Methods: Using the 2015 Mexican Health and Aging Study, we estimated expected cognition using multiple ELD markers to identify a subsample in the lowest quartile of expected cognition given ELD (n = 2,086). In this subsample, we estimated cross-sectional associations between personality and having above-median observed cognitive ability (n = …

Best Practices Are Never Best: Evaluating Primate Conservation Education Programs (Pceps) With A Decolonial Perspective, Michelle Bezanson, Montserrat Franquesa-Soler, Martin Kowalewski, Allison Mcnamara, Rahayu Oktaviani, Michelle A. Rodrigues

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Who do we aim to educate with primate conservation education programs (PCEPs)? In a commentary published in a recent AJP, Annette Lanjouw suggested that many efforts to “educate” habitat-country communities can be neocolonial in their approaches. Forest destruction and habitat loss are a result of global consumption and expansion. We therefore need to approach conservation education from many angles including local stakeholders, policy makers, government officials, and the humans living in industrialized nations who are major consumers of the items that shrink primate habitats. In this review, we investigate PCEPs to determine if the conservation education goals, education methods, and …

The South In Young Adult Literature: Behind Southern Stereotypes, Margaret Martin May 2023

The South In Young Adult Literature: Behind Southern Stereotypes, Margaret Martin

English Undergraduate Honors Theses

The United States South has a long, complicated history, and some of its stories have not had the opportunity to be shared. Because of the ways in which the region has been represented stereotypically, many Americans have a misinformed perspective on what it means to live as a Southerner. Due in part to a lack of diversity in the publishing industry, a common phenomenon has been the retelling of the white man and his experiences within the region, as “89% of authors that were published in 2018 were white” (So & Wezerek). Yet because of editorial changes within the last …

The Effectiveness Of Targeted Education On Improving Nurses’ Self-Efficacy In Caring For Psychiatric Patients On Medical Surgical Units, Rachel Shirey Apr 2023

The Effectiveness Of Targeted Education On Improving Nurses’ Self-Efficacy In Caring For Psychiatric Patients On Medical Surgical Units, Rachel Shirey

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Individuals with mental illness are occasionally hospitalized on medical units, specifically medical-surgical units. Nurses working on medical-surgical units may find patients with mental illness more challenging due to the complexity of care they sometimes require. Nurses’ perceived ability to provide quality care for these patients is reduced in comparison to their perceived ability to care for patients without mental illness. Consequently, low self-efficacy can result in the provision of a lower quality of care for this population. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to improve the care that patients with mental illness receive while hospitalized on medical-surgical units. …
