Effects Of Leadership Education And Mentoring For Assistant Nurse Managers, Karen T. Descent
Effects Of Leadership Education And Mentoring For Assistant Nurse Managers, Karen T. Descent
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: Nurse manager knowledge and leadership styles influence quality of care, patient satisfaction, staff engagement, and retention. Dissatisfaction with the assistant nurse manager (ANM) role can lead to high job turnover with negative influences on patient satisfaction, quality of care, workforce engagement, and achievement of organizational goals.
Local Problem: Two hospitals and one free-standing ambulatory surgery unit of a large integrated healthcare organization experienced high ANM turnover due to role dissatisfaction, ANM frustration with low-quality care in the units they oversaw, and patient satisfaction metrics below the 65th percentile. The regional healthcare system leadership team recognized the need to increase …

Community Health Worker Program: Adverse Childhood Experiences And Early Childhood, Arelis Sandoval
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) negatively affect childhood development and long-term health outcomes. Latino children face multiple adversities and social determinants of health compounded by ACEs. Community Health Workers (CHWs) have access to work with families to improve resilience and mitigate the effects of ACEs in this population.
Local Problem: In the Central Valley of California, CHWs provide support and resources to a largely Latino population with increased poverty rates, low educational attainment, lack of health insurance, and many chronic health issues, putting families at a higher risk for ACEs exposure. CHWs need further training to apply ACEs knowledge to …

Reducing 30-Day Heart Failure Hospital Readmissions Through The Implementation Of A Telehealth Education And Screening Program, Madison Geib, Jo Loomis, Maria (Dupi) Gomez Cogan
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Heart Failure (HF) is a difficult disease to manage. It requires knowledge on weight monitoring, diet, exercise, medications, and symptom management. With this difficulty, there is a high incidence of HF patient readmissions into the hospital, especially in the first 30-days after discharge, showing that patients are not well equipped to manage their HF on their own at home. A review of the available literature found that some of the most common reasons for readmission include poor discharge planning, a lack of continuation of care, as well as a lack of education and adherence to their medications (Mathew & Thukha, …

Slack In Education: A Voice Platform For Quiet Students A Personal Reflection Using Drawings, Emma M. Corby
Slack In Education: A Voice Platform For Quiet Students A Personal Reflection Using Drawings, Emma M. Corby
English
In this thesis, I will be exploring how Slack can be used as a platform for quiet students in the classroom. I do this by referring to barriers I faced as a quiet student myself. These barriers include the competitive atmosphere of learning, unheard communications for help, unread and unanswered emails, and limited connections with my teachers. The scholarship on Slack's presence in education hasn't yet researched the topic of Slack as a platform for quiet students to find their voice. In this thesis, I explore my own experiences as a quiet student and as a teacher using Slack; I …

Democratic Disagreements. A Book Review Of Lived Democracy In Education. Young Citizens’ Democratic Lives In Kindergarten, School And Higher Education, Sonja Helkala, Julia Jaakkola, Tuukka Tomperi
Democracy & Education
As the title Lived Democracy in Education suggests, the predominantly Norwegian writers of the book share a deep and robust vision of democracy. Drawing on deliberative democratic theory and many other theoretical perspectives, the authors blend theory, practice, and empirical case studies to illuminate these modes of “lived democracy” in educational contexts. In particular, the book’s chapters examine different communicative interactions between children and young people, presenting these as examples of learning to live with controversies in communities of disagreement. The book contains valuable perspectives on democratic discussion in education. As several authors are experts in mathematics and science education, …
Liberating Children, Or Breaking The Backbone Of Our Democracy? A Book Review Of Hostages No More: The Fight For Education Freedom And The Future Of The American Child, Jeffrey Frenkiewich
Liberating Children, Or Breaking The Backbone Of Our Democracy? A Book Review Of Hostages No More: The Fight For Education Freedom And The Future Of The American Child, Jeffrey Frenkiewich
Democracy & Education
In Hostages No More, former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos provides a 10-chapter memoir in which she argues for school privatization, including the expansion of government funding of charter schools. DeVos argues that the modern public education system, supported by an “establishment” of government bureaucracies, the education industrial complex, and teacher unions, holds American children, especially poor Black and Hispanic children, “hostage” (DeVos, 2022, p. 261) and that her life’s work has been a civil rights struggle to help parents and their children obtain their “education freedom” (p. 216). However, many of her claims are supported with misleading information, and …
Navigating Context Collapse: A Strengths-Based Approach To Building Youth Civic Empowerment. A Response To “Blended Spaces: Reimagining Civic Education In A Digital Era”, Ellen Middaugh, Mariah Kornbluh, Mark Felton
Navigating Context Collapse: A Strengths-Based Approach To Building Youth Civic Empowerment. A Response To “Blended Spaces: Reimagining Civic Education In A Digital Era”, Ellen Middaugh, Mariah Kornbluh, Mark Felton
Democracy & Education
In the article “Blended Spaces: Reimagining Civic Education in a Digital Era,” the authors joined a new area of research on "civic media literacy," or the capacity to use media with civic intentionality. Building on previous scholarship that examined how to support youth capacity for effective civic inquiry, dialogue, expression, and action in the digital age, the authors contributed to this literature by usefully elaborating on the phenomenon of “context collapse” and the challenges this blurring of the boundaries between public and private spheres may present, particularly in the liminal spaces where the shifting boundaries most clearly depart from the …
Deliberative Facilitation In The Classroom: The Interplay Of Facilitative Technique And Design To Make Space For Democracy, Kei Nishiyama, A. Wendy Russell, Pierrick Chalaye, Tom Greenwell
Deliberative Facilitation In The Classroom: The Interplay Of Facilitative Technique And Design To Make Space For Democracy, Kei Nishiyama, A. Wendy Russell, Pierrick Chalaye, Tom Greenwell
Democracy & Education
Widespread global interest and adoption of deliberative democracy approaches to reinvigorate citizenship and policymaking in an era of democratic crisis/decline has been mirrored by increasing interest in deliberation in schools, both as an approach to pedagogy and student empowerment and as a training ground for deliberative citizenship. In school deliberation, as in other settings, a key and sometimes neglected element of high-quality deliberation is facilitation. Facilitation can help to establish and maintain deliberative norms, assist participants to deliberate productively, and enable collective goals. By participating in facilitated deliberation, students can develop awareness, skills, and voice that empower them to engage …
Creating Inclusive Interface And Online Learning Environments, Grace Mosher
Creating Inclusive Interface And Online Learning Environments, Grace Mosher
Education | Master's Theses
This study seeks to examine educational learning environments with a focus on new platforms of learning, course design, equity, inclusion, and user interface (ex: seeing impaired, cultural differences, gender) that includes the perspectives of students with disabilities. The evolution of learning from singular multi-age classrooms through institutional schools and into dynamic online platforms has radically reshaped the educational ecosystem (Sarkar, 2020), and there have been calls for a deeper understanding of inclusive learning practices to meet the needs of diverse students (Philips & Salem, 2021). Adams (2017) also outlines how the aesthetic interface of each learning environment impacts the quality …
Implementing Ethics Education For Nurse Managers, Mona L. Lateyice, Rachel E. Marzec
Implementing Ethics Education For Nurse Managers, Mona L. Lateyice, Rachel E. Marzec
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Background: Every day, nurses are faced with making decisions for patient care and may come across complicated ethical decisions. Ethical practice is essential in every health care organization in providing care and how they conduct themselves (ANA, 2015). Nurse managers are responsible for ensuring ethical standards are met by nursing staff.
Problem: Nurse managers are faced with ethical problems more than fifty percent of their work time (Aitamaa, 2019). There are studies that show nurse managers and nurses have difficulty solving ethical problems because they lack understanding of ethical principles (Huang, et al., 2020). Evidence shows nurses are deficient in …

Chapter 17- Mentoring Redesigned To Attract Entry-Level Students, Timothy Schroeder, Tara S. Hackel, Yadéeh E. Sawyer
Making Connections
Competitive and highly structured mentoring relationships between undergraduate students and professional researchers are often life-changing. However, such mentoring programs often have rigid qualifications and attract students who are already advanced in their educational and professional planning. The University of New Mexico (UNM) developed a program to shift the paradigm to attract entry-level students for whom “professional research” was still a new and daunting concept. By pairing these students with engineers and scientists at the Air Force Research Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory, UNM was able to engage students in structured, low-stakes mentoring that helped shape their current understanding of research, …

Chapter 22- The Well-Prepared Adjunct: Peer Mentoring, Autonomy Supports, And Values-Based Pedagogy, Dionne Clabaugh
Making Connections
This mentoring program was developed to meet two needs in the School of Human Development: college alumni who applied for adjunct faculty positions lacked college teaching experience, and non-alumni applicants lacked pedagogical skill with nontraditional adult learners. This college is a Hispanic-serving institution with core values of inclusion, diversity, respect, and social justice. Their transformational, culture-centered pedagogy is grounded in seven faculty values that develop learner competence across five domains: development, diversity, communication, research, and growth.
The program meta-mentor describes how and why autonomy-supportive instruction (ASI), based on self-determination theory, is embedded into all elements of the adjunct faculty mentoring …

Chapter 21- Mentoring Graduate Underrepresented Minorities In Stem, Benjamin C. Flores, Jessica Shenberger-Trujillo, Milka Montes
Making Connections
In this chapter, we discuss high-impact mentoring practices for graduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). We make a case for inclusive and assets/strengths-based mentoring approaches as a strategy for increasing the number of doctoral degrees awarded to historically underrepresented minorities (i.e., Hispanics, African Americans, Native Americans, Alaska Natives, and Pacific Islanders); improving their levels of satisfaction with doctoral programs and reducing the notoriously extended time to the PhD that they endure. We offer two examples of national programs committed to promoting graduate student success through professional development and mentoring strategies in which instrumental support, sponsorship, psychological support, …
Chapter 26- Staff Mentoring And Development At Arizona State University, Karen Engler-Weber
Chapter 26- Staff Mentoring And Development At Arizona State University, Karen Engler-Weber
Making Connections
Most university structures provide extensive mentoring and support for students and faculty, but the mentoring of university staff is often a neglected area within university systems, despite the clear need to support staff professional development, career advancement, and retention. At Arizona State University (ASU), the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) has developed an extensive university-wide staff mentoring and development program model that pairs staff mentees with mentors, providing the space and opportunity for mentees to identify their strengths and consider their long-term career trajectory at ASU. Through mentoring, participants learn more about specific skills, university areas, and career …

Chapter 28- Networked Mentoring Programs: Targeted Developmental Relationships And Building A Broader Community, Valerie Paquette, Wendy Murphy, Susan Duffy
Making Connections
We introduce a targeted approach to mentoring programs that considers students’ developmental stage and fosters an inclusive mentoring community. Using the case study of Babson College’s Center for Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Mentoring Programs, this chapter will detail evidence-based effective practice in delivering high-quality mentoring across distinctive student populations as well as connecting students and mentor volunteers to one another to cultivate a mentoring community. We highlight three mentoring programs: the Undergraduate Near Peer, Undergraduate Professional, and Graduate mentor programs. Each program is designed to match student mentees with developmentally appropriate mentors who provide support tailored to their needs. The Undergraduate …
Chapter 14- The Mentoring Program As A Research Project, David Law, Nicole Vouvalis, Andy Harris, Jim Lamuth
Chapter 14- The Mentoring Program As A Research Project, David Law, Nicole Vouvalis, Andy Harris, Jim Lamuth
Making Connections
Chapter 14, “The Mentoring Program as a Research Project,” helps stakeholders, program coordinators, and researchers distinguish the differences and similarities between program evaluation and program research. If stakeholders choose to include program research, they will need approval from their university’s institutional review board (IRB). Therefore, the second section of this chapter helps stakeholders navigate the IRB. The third section of this chapter describes how theoretical frameworks, operational definitions of mentoring, and methodological designs factor into mentoring programs that contain research. While all formal mentoring programs in academia should include theoretical frameworks, operational definitions, and sound methodology, many do not. The …

Chapter 6- The Mentoring Context: Securing Institutional Support And Organizational Alignment, James Y. Taylor, Greg Dart
Making Connections
A university’s mission and vision statements are the guiding documents that create a framework by which the institution can accomplish its goals. All university initiatives are tied back to that mission and vision, and alignment is essential for university support of bottom-up initiatives. No matter how mentoring is structured, one area that is essential is proper internal institutional support and alignment with the mission of the institution. Focusing on the context in which the formal mentoring program occurs, this chapter outlines the importance of executive support, mission and vision alignment, incentivizing participation for both mentors and mentees, and how mentoring …
Chapter 7- The Crucial Role And Responsibilities Of The Mentoring Program Coordinator, Michael A. Christiansen, Don Busenbark
Chapter 7- The Crucial Role And Responsibilities Of The Mentoring Program Coordinator, Michael A. Christiansen, Don Busenbark
Making Connections
Mentoring is a crucial part of personal and professional development in practically any environment, including higher education, industry, and private institutions, though the nature and methods of such mentoring may vary as much as the organizations themselves. Because institutions differ so much in their structures and needs, it is important that a dedicated program coordinator be assigned to define mentoring and spearhead the construction, implementation, assessment, and evaluation of any institutional mentoring program. This program coordinator should have enthusiasm for mentoring, effectively communicate program goals, and provide the training and resources necessary to implement an efficient mentoring model. Coordinators should …
