It is the attempt then of this thesis to study a) the basic philosophy of American Experimentalism and the techniques for carrying this program into effect; b) the basic philosophy of Catholic education and the methodology used for carrying this approach into effect; c) the present and proposed methodologies of teachers in Lutheran secondary schools; d) and finally, the summary ina final outline, or all techniques suggested by this study which are in agreement with the Lutheran Christian philosophy or education and which propose a fuller integration of the Lutheran Christian principles.

This study is intended (1) to explain how it came to pass that religious orders have been conducting public schools in New Mexico, (2) to reveal the outcome of controversies or litigation involving claims of illegality in the practice, and (3) to present the contributions of Catholic religious orders to public education in New Mexico since the American occupation by offering a brief history of the public schools which they have conducted.

The orientation course in the Sacramento Senior High School has developed withint the school. In making a study of this orientation course, it seems important to make a study of some representative schools in the west and middle west sections of our country. Geetalt Psychology teaches us the importance of dealing with wholes and this theory applied to education produces the modern theory of developing the whole child up to his inherent abilities. The Carnegie Institute claims, following research, that only 15% of those who lose their jobs do so because of lack of skill to perform the specific task that is allotted to them to do. The other 85% are found to be no longer needed by the employer because of personality or character defects.

Progressive education uses the terminology of education but apparently places particular connotations on certain terms which are noticeable prominent in the ideology of Progressive Education. The very ubiquity of these terms is proof of their importance in the philosophies of Progressive Education. Since certain terms are so prominent, their connotations may well be assembled for educational examination. It is well to observe definitely wherein these connotations vary from the general connotations attached to these same terms.
