In school systems, among educators and psychologists throughout the country, it has long been recognized that many children are failing to learn to read at the time the initial reading instruction is presented. Some experts have believed that one of the major reasons for this reading failure, stems from the fact that reading instruction was first presented at an age too young, chronologically and mentally, that it, less than six years four months to six years six months, for first grade pupils to benefit from such instruction. Teacher education institutions had given little recognition to audio-visual education prior to World War II. Various studies conducted since that time indicated that audio-visual courses have increased in number thirty to forty times in the past twenty years. Although the increase in such courses has been rapid, the total number of institutions offering audio-visual education is not sufficient.

The purpose of this study was to determine the degree to which grades assigned by Air Force Reserve Officer's Training Corps personnel at the Municipal University of Omaha, Nebraska correlate with grades given these same students by other university instructors. On the basis of findings made on a comparison of grades during the 1951-52 school year the belief is held that a very close correlation will be found to exist between grades given cadets by AFROTC personnel and grades given cadets by their other university instructors during the first semester of the 1952-53 school year.
