A Comparative Study Of Twelfth-Grade Social Studies Using A Student-Activity Method, A Traditional Method, And A Combination Traditional-Activity Method Of Instruction., James Edward Darcy Jan 1973

A Comparative Study Of Twelfth-Grade Social Studies Using A Student-Activity Method, A Traditional Method, And A Combination Traditional-Activity Method Of Instruction., James Edward Darcy

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The problem statement. The twelfth grade social studies in the Merced Union High School District had been traditional in its organization and structure until the mid 1960's. 10 At that time the district-began to encourage teachers of government to draft new goals and innovate new methods of instruction in the government curriculum. Three separate methods of teaching twelfth grade social studies emerged as a result of that encouragement. In the Atwater High School, an activity-centered approach uses team teaching in which the emphasis is on having students involved in "doing" rather than listening and reading about government. This method includes …

A Study Of Selected Walt Disney Screenplays And Films And The Stereotyping Of The Role Of The Female, Jerry P. Houseman Jan 1973

A Study Of Selected Walt Disney Screenplays And Films And The Stereotyping Of The Role Of The Female, Jerry P. Houseman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Given this large involvement that children have with motion pictures, an educator is moved to inquire into the possible effects that movies might have upon them. It, therefore, seems appropriate that an educational dissertation be undertaken concentrating on Disney Production films, since as indicated by the foregoing, they are so universally viewed by American children.

Statement of the problem:

This study attempted to (1) analyze the five screenplays listed on page 6, (2) show two Disney films based on the screenplays analyzed to groups of children and administer a questionnaire to them. The investigator used the obtained data to determine …

A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Individual Learning Units In A Junior High School Basic Mathematics Program., Nicholas Anthony Laplaca

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The study was designed to: (1) determine the expenditures for an individual basic mathematics program in the junior high schools using individual Learning Units, (2) determine the expenditures for a traditional, textbook-oriented approach to basic mathematics instruction, and (3) compare the achievement gains of the two programs. Null hypotheses related to cost-effectiveness stated that the operational cost per unit gain, and the sum of the developmental and operational cost per unit gain of the ILU program would be greater than the cost per unit gain of the traditional approach. Null hypotheses related to effectiveness stated that the ILU treatment would …

A Study Of The Advice And Counsel Given By Omaha Pediatricians And General Practitioners To The Parents Of Retarded Children, Nancy Karen Kelly

Student Work

Since the beginning of man, the human race has had the problem of dealing with those individuals who could not function and learn as well in society as could the great majority. The vast majority of them are best known by the label, retarded. In ancient times, they were persecuted, mistreated, and even left to die . The rise of Christianity had not significantly improved their lot, and it wasn't until the 19th century that men and women such as Itard, Sequin, Montessori, and Decroly began to investigate their potential. Despite considerable effort, many thousands of retarded children and adults …

A Model To Elicit Optimum Internal Communications In Unified School Districts, Harry C. Weinberg

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Often it is the case unified school districts do not have optimum internal communications. "'Today school personnel, including administrator, often 'confound' their own language by failing to communicate adequately and effectively or by communicating unintentionally in a manner that is detrimental to them and the schools with which they are associated."

Each district has its own unique instruments and channels by which internal communications take place. Knezevich states~, "Communications is one of the least understood areas in administration." This study provides information about successful communication techniques and presents a viable model that should have positive practical implications for unified school …

The Effect Of Feedback Of Quiz Results On Achievement In Introductory College Economics., William Guilbert Darling Jan 1973

The Effect Of Feedback Of Quiz Results On Achievement In Introductory College Economics., William Guilbert Darling

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Problem: Kelley's "Teaching Information Processing System (TIPS)” provides informative feedback (IF) from non-credit quizzes to students, teaching assistants, and instructor. Differentiated assignments are made according to quiz results. TIPS classes achieve reliably higher midterm scores than control classes in introductory economics; no final examination comparisons have been reported. TIPS may be an important contribution to educational technology, but questions may be raised about (1) the contribution of quizzes-cum-feedback-to-students to achievement, as measured by the. Test of Understanding in College Economics (TUCE), and (2) the effects of the interaction of personality variables and informative feedback (IF) intervals on achievement.

Purposes: 1. …

An Organizational Typology : The Nature Of An Incongruent Organization, Ursula Loree Shepherd

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The research group was also anxious to take on this study because it was just following the first welfare worker’s strike in California. This had occurred at the agency in question and provided a situation in which the team would receive maximum cooperation. It was expected that the agency would be more likely to implement the team’s suggestions.

As the study progressed the questions which became of most interest were those which related to the issues of whether or not the organization could function well, where the sources of power and goal-setting lay, and what could be done. After a …

This is a study of the differential incidence of unemployment between white and nonwhite male workers in the U.S. labor force. The general question to which this study addresses itself is to what extent can the higher incidence of nonwhite compared to white unemployment at a point in time and over a period of time be explained by differences in certain characteristics of the respective labor forces.

To measure and compare the relative unemployment burdens of white and nonwhite workers, the unemployment differential will be investigated. The differential can be of two types: the relative differential, denoted by the ratio …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the two gubernatorial terms of J. Bracken Lee, Governor of Utah 1948-1956, and the effect he had on education during these years. Lee has been accused by his detractors of being opposed to education. He has been defended by his supporters as being a friend whose only desire was to have education operated on a sound fiscal basis. During his two terms as governor he was almost constantly involved in some dispute with the education people in the state and was frequently on the defensive against anti-education charges.
