03. First Edition Of Harry Stottlemeier's Discovery (1974) By Matthew Lipman, Matthew Lipman

Middle School Curriculum

Harry Stottlemeier's Discovery is the student book for a project in philosophical thinking. It offers a model of dialogue—both of children with one another and of children with adults. The story is set among a classroom of children who begin to understand the basics of logical reasoning when Harry, who isn't paying attention in class, says that a comet is a planet because he remembers hearing that comets revolve around the sun just as planets do. The events that follow in the classroom and outside of school are a recreation of the ways that children night might find themselves thinking …

The Role And Role-Performance Of Members Of County Extension Advisory Committees As Perceived By Selected Committee Members And County Extension Directors In Florida., William Carlton Smith Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate Florida County Extension Directors* and county Extension advisory committee members* perception of the roles and role performance of county Extension advisory committees. This purpose evolved from Extension personnel experiencing varying degrees of success in the committee approach to Extension program development. It was felt that this could be due to a lack of common understanding by Extension agents and committee members of the roles and functions of advisory committees. Two, similar but separate, mail questionnaires were sent to the County Extension Directors and 303 members of the over-all Extension advisory committee in …

Broggies On The Playground : Some Approaches To Creative Writing, Churchlands Teachers College Jan 1974

Broggies On The Playground : Some Approaches To Creative Writing, Churchlands Teachers College

Research outputs pre 2011

This is the second booklet of children's writing - and some approaches to teaching it - to be produced by this College. Once again all the writing comes from children at the Churchlands Primary School and the lessons were taken by members of an elective group.

There are examples of work from grades four to seven.

The length of each teaching period was only half an hour so there was little opportunity for students to re-write and improve on their first efforts. However, that particular insight which seems to be the prerogative of children is evident to some extent in …

Update And Revision Of The School Board Policies Manual Of The Blair Community School System, Roger H. Petersen Jan 1974

Update And Revision Of The School Board Policies Manual Of The Blair Community School System, Roger H. Petersen

Student Work

Although boards of education have been in existence for 300 years in the United States, until the 1950's little attention had been paid to the provisions of well organized and systematically written board policies. It has been only since the 1950's that educational policy development has been commonly accepted as the most important function of local school boards. The decade of the 1960's was a period of rapid change for public education. School boards were challenged and subjected to sharp criticisms. Employee professional negotiations, militant students, community factions, and troubled taxpayers brought to bear new pressures to boards of education. …

An Empirical Estimation Of A Cost Function For Elementary And Secondary Education, Alexander Bradley Holmes Jan 1974

An Empirical Estimation Of A Cost Function For Elementary And Secondary Education, Alexander Bradley Holmes

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Recent court cases, such as the California case of Serrano v. Priest, have revived interest in the question of equal educational opportunity. While The Supreme Court ruled that, in effect, education is not a right guaranteed under the Constitution and thus financing education on the basis of a local property tax is not unconstitutional, the provision of equal educational opportunity is still very much a live public issue, at least on the state level. The institution of the Fleischmann Commission in New York State to study educational financing with the mandate that "removing (educational) inequities deserves top priority" is …
