What the adult does during the intertrial interval that the child does not to process information was under investigation in this series of studies. Representative ages chosen due to a difference in the utilization of control processes were 5-, 7-, 11-, and 19-year olds. The initial study tested the initial availability of information to the subject prior to processing. The major question was detecting developmental differences in kinesthetic sensory store. Results indicated that the superior performance of the adults is not due to the initial availability of the information. The second study investigated the detriment to performance by increasing the …

A Film Analysis Of Motor Pattern Development Of Educable Mentally Retarded Children., Leonard Max Hill

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the study was to compare the standing long jump, place kick, overarm throw and striking patterns of educable mentally retarded children to the mature patterns of highly skilled individuals. It was also the purpose of this study to determine if these same motor patterns were inherent in educable mentally retarded subjects and to determine if these patterns would emerge naturally in a goal-centered teaching-learning environment. Eleven educable mentally retarded children between the ages of five and eight years were selected to participate in the study. The children participated in a one week (fifteen minutes per day) orientation …

School documents and other recorded data are also used to trace the development of these schools. Variables suggested by Dahrendorf and by Nevin and Bills are explored and further developed. Enrollment figures are used in a state-wide analysis of the effect of potential black enrollment …

Learning From Animals: Models For Studying Physiology And Disease, W. Jean Dodds Jan 1980

Learning From Animals: Models For Studying Physiology And Disease, W. Jean Dodds

Education Collection

Animals can serve as valuable educational tools for elementary and high school students. By teaching young people reverence for all forms of life at an early age, it is possible to instill in them a proper perspective concerning the welfare and humane stewardship of animals. Exemplary subjects include the various aspects of evolutionary and embryological development; normal physiological processes, the mechanisms and pathology of naturally occurring infectious, metabolic, genetic and neoplastic diseases and aging; and an appreciation of the inevitability of death. Such studies can serve as learning models for students because these processes parallel or closely resemble those of …

Student (And Animal) Welfare, Leonard M. Krause Jan 1980

Student (And Animal) Welfare, Leonard M. Krause

Education Collection

Adolescents exhibit affection for numerous vertebrates and appear to sympathize and to identify with traumas these animals experience. Therapeutic benefits students attach to nurturing and breeding certain vertebrates are evident; destruction of these same creatures produces clearly negative attitudes by students toward the science course and the instructor. "Case histories" documented while teaching high school students working with vertebrates are reviewed and are related to specific techniques (e.g., pithing) utilized by numerous instructors. Motivation, increased attention span, sustained interest, involvement with community issues and other desirable educational goals are demonstrated to be resultants of student involvement with living vertebrates studied …

The Construction Of A Logical-Empirical Structure Of Knowledge For Differential Calculus Using A Theoretical Framework Based Upon Learning Hierarchy Theory And Order Theory, James Martin Devecchi Jan 1980

The Construction Of A Logical-Empirical Structure Of Knowledge For Differential Calculus Using A Theoretical Framework Based Upon Learning Hierarchy Theory And Order Theory, James Martin Devecchi

Doctoral Dissertations

The principal result of this study is a logically and empirically valid Structure of Knowledge for Differential Calculus constructed using a methodology based on Learning Hierarchy Theory (LHT) and Order Theory (OT). A review of existing research into calculus learning is presented and properties of the strucutre of knowledge which address deficiencies in existing knowledge discussed. LHT is developed and techniques for the empirical validation and generation of hierarchies are discussed. Included in this discussion is a detailed analysis of the important properties of OT.

The generation of the structure of knowledge consisted of two phases: the logical analysis and …

Spatial Ability, Mathematics Achievement, And Spatial Training In Male And Female Calculus Students, Joan Ferrini Mundy

Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of spatial training upon calculus achievement, spatial visualization, and tendency and ability to visualize solids of revolution in calculus, for college males and females. A random sample of 250 first-semester calculus students at the University of New Hampshire was apportioned into seven experimental groups, each containing males and females. Students were pretested on precalculus background, spatial visualization, and calculus background, and were assigned to one of three treatment conditions: audiovisual spatial training (AV), audio-vidual-tactual spatial training (AVT), and a control condition. The spatial training materials were organized into six …

Fundamental Criteria For Determining The Educational Value Of Live Animal Experimentation In High School Science Fairs, David H. Neil Jan 1980

Fundamental Criteria For Determining The Educational Value Of Live Animal Experimentation In High School Science Fairs, David H. Neil

Education Collection

The author contends that great and very detailed attention to one minuscule facet of experimental animal biology, particularly if it requires the skilled and uniform alteration of a significant number of animals, is of no real educational value to a high school student. This type of work, the necessity for it and the full understanding of its significance to the furtherance of human understanding must be the province only of those who are intellectually prepared. The suggestion is made that projects, which develop a more complete understanding of common and profoundly important elements in life (as we know it), should …

The Challenge And Motivation Of Students Through Live Animal Projects, Thurman S. Grafton Jan 1980

The Challenge And Motivation Of Students Through Live Animal Projects, Thurman S. Grafton

Education Collection

The subject of use of live animals by secondary schools either in classroom work or science fairs is a very controversial and often emotional issue. The author emphasizes the dedication to humane treatment of animals while at the same time explaining the process by which rules have been formulated to provide for the appropriate use of live animals. The difference between permission and mandate is clarified for the purpose of explaining the need to provide for the more effective challenge and motivation of the high achiever while still allowing for more modest undertakings by the average student The perils of …

Science Youth Activities And Animal Experimentation, E. G. Sherburne Jr. Jan 1980

Science Youth Activities And Animal Experimentation, E. G. Sherburne Jr.

Education Collection

Science youth activities (extracurricular science activities) involve millions of young people at the elementary and secondary school level. Such activities are popular with young people and with teachers because they offer values different from those provided by classroom work and the required laboratory. National science youth activity programs include science fairs and the International Science and Engineering Fair, the Science Talent Search, and a number of other programs. For activities involving research, animals have been increasingly used because of the increased sophistication of the students doing the work. While some projects using vertebrates may be done poorly, it is suggested …

All Graduate Projects

A Home Interaction Program (HIP) was designed and implemented for Title I parents and students. The components of the program included monthly newsletters, libraries, and workshops. It was found that parents of Title I students participated in HIP activities as long as they could be done in the home. The conclusion was reached that if schools want Title I parents to become involved in their child's education learning experiences, programs must be developed to reach into the home.

The five attitudes examined were generosity, greed, perseverance, quarreling, and respect for others. Forty-eight third-grade pupils from two classrooms were randomly assigned to three treatment groups. The three treatments were (1) a McGuffey Reader Treatment, in which subjects listened to selections from McGuffey readers which were written in a didactic literary style; (2) a Dr. Seuss Book Treatment, in which subjects listened to stories and books authored by Dr. Seuss which represented a …
