Administrative Support Of Library Programs In Selected Public Elementary Schools In Louisiana., Marjorie Jane Ducote
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Administrative support for elementary school library programs was studied with emphasis upon the awareness, attitude, and actions of the principal, and the working relationship between the principal and the librarian. A survey was conducted in order to determine varying degrees of agreement or disagreement with statements which were indicative of administrative support for school libraries. Questionnaires were sent to one hundred fifty-five principals of schools which were randomly selected, and to one hundred fifty-five librarians of the same schools. Ninety-two percent of the principals (one hundred forty-two) and ninety-six percent of the librarians (one hundred fifty) responded. The first five …

(1983) Education For Autonomy: A Nietzschean Perspective, Ann Margaret Sharp
(1983) Education For Autonomy: A Nietzschean Perspective, Ann Margaret Sharp
Collected Papers of Ann Margaret Sharp
Friedrich Nietzsche was aware of the dangers of the state control over education, as well as the dangers of the technical society in general. Dehumanization, loss of freedom and power to create alternatives for the society could spell the death of the society itself. Human beings could well become nothing more than cogs in a machine of production and consumption. The human self whose urge is the will to grow, to become more, will eventually have nothing to will anymore. Ohly an education which encourages a new conception of freedom -- intellectual freedom as the self affirmation of life against …

Modifying The New York State Public School Financing Formula After Levittown, Elizabeth M. Flinn
Modifying The New York State Public School Financing Formula After Levittown, Elizabeth M. Flinn
Fordham Urban Law Journal
Spending on public education is primarily an obligation of state legislature and local school districts in the United States. Legislatures determine not only the amount of education spending, but also how much money is to be given to specific school districts. As a result, there have been growing discrepancies over how much financial assistance one district will have over another, leaving children from poor and fiscally overburdened districts at a disadvantage. This Note focuses on the New York case, Levittown v. Nyquist, as well as the New York funding formula, and ultimately recommends adoption of a school finance system that …

Marginal Images: Art And Ideology In The School, Dan Nadaner
Marginal Images: Art And Ideology In The School, Dan Nadaner
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Art has come to connote something that is eclectic and unpredictable. Art may be concerned with the aesthetic organization of visual elements, or it may defy conventional aesthetics; it may seek to interpret visual experience, or it may interpret psychological phenomenon that have no visual manifestation; it may have significant social content, or it may not. Art defies generalizations about its form, but welcomes more readily a characterization of its spirit. Art is inquiring, open-ended, illuminating, often startling. Art is very close to the central concerns and experiential reality of the artist. While it is increasingly difficult to say what …

An Exploratory Functional-Structural Analysis Of American Urban Traditional And Alternative Secondary Public Schools, Mary Ellen Sweeney
Dissertations and Theses
This study investigates the way traditional and alternative secondary public school organizations are structured to impact youths. Some studies have found that traditional secondary schools utilize inappropriate and outdated organizational elements and arrangements. Alternative schools with different organizational arrangements have been initiated in public school districts to institute school reform measures. The three goals of this study are to: (1) collate a large share of the literature on the function, social context and organizational characteristics of conventional and alternative secondary public school organizations, (2) explicate a theoretical framework or interrelated set of propositions of organizational principles regarding modern organizations, including …

Identifying Important Phonological Features In The Expressive Use Of Signs By A Non-Oral Mentally Retarded-Emotionally Disturbed Child., Mary Wunder Lopez
Student Work
This study investigated the phonology of a sign system when it was used to train expressive vocabulary development in a mentally retarded-emotionally disturbed child. The study specifically dealt with the salience of movement and number of hands involved in the construction of a sign. For the subject in the study, two-handed signs involving movement were the most readily learned. Further comparison among the categories observed indicated that the parameter of movement appeared to be an important factor in expressive learning of while the number of hands involved was less important. Recent studies show that ease of acquisition may be influenced …
Factors Facilitating Or Impeding The Initial Placement Of Women Graduates In Educational Administration., Eleanor Renee Anderson-Jackson
Factors Facilitating Or Impeding The Initial Placement Of Women Graduates In Educational Administration., Eleanor Renee Anderson-Jackson
Student Work
American women have a gift of time which no other group of women in the history of the world have had, The average life-span is approaching 80 years compared to 47 years at the turn of the century (Osborn, 1977). Industrial research and technology have eliminated much of the drudgery in the home. Now, anxiety of preparing for additional years and hours without the 'benefit of structure, while attempting to satisfy one's own needs and the needs of many others, produces a "challenging uncom fortableness" among women today. This phenomenon is often interpreted as abnormal behavior, eliciting such comments as, …

A Study Of Catharsis (Abreaction, Emotional Discharge), In 4th, 5th, And 6th Grade Students, Drina Miriam Fried-Roberts
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Problem. Catharsis is becoming more widely talked about as a method to get rid of negative emotions, to gain increased achievement, social maturity, and emotional well being. The emphasis on affective education is one example. There have been few controlled studies testing the catharsis hypothesis directly. No formal research is available that uses (randomly chosen) young people as subjects in studying emotional discharge.
Purpose. The purpose of the study is to see whether elementary school students can accept training in this re-evaluation counseling mental health model. Comparisons of those who hear about the model are made with those who hear …

The Relationship Of Location To The Effectiveness Of Marriage Enrichment Retreats And Workshops, Lavon W. Rupel
The Relationship Of Location To The Effectiveness Of Marriage Enrichment Retreats And Workshops, Lavon W. Rupel
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The Problem. The proliferation of marriage enrichment programs in the past two decades has generated much public interest. Little controlled research, however, has been done to guide sponsoring community agencies and churches in program effectiveness. It has been assumed that a retreat location, removed from daily routines and stresses, enhances the learning and growth opportunities for a couple who wish to focus on their relationship. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of one marriage enrichment program and to investigate the importance of location as a factor in the effectiveness of marriage enrichment weekends. In addition, the …
The Effects Of L1 And L2 Instruction On The Metalinguistic Awareness Of Spanish-Speaking Children, Rene Merino
The Effects Of L1 And L2 Instruction On The Metalinguistic Awareness Of Spanish-Speaking Children, Rene Merino
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The Problem: While middle class students can succeed in L2 immersion programs, there is growing evidence that language minority students from low socioeconomic backgrounds do better in Ll programs. Jim Cummins' linguistic interdependency hypothesis resolves this apparent paradox by proposing that middle class students enter school with cognitive academic language proficiencies (CALF), which allow them to succeed in language mismatch situations. He claims that CALF is best developed in Ll and that schools should_teach language minority students in their first language. This study attempted to test the validity of Cummins' CALF construct. It also investigated the effects of Ll and …
