A moralist believes that an emotionally disturbed youngster lacks a strong value system--especially when it comes to controlling his/her baser instincts. Psychoanalysts theorize about rudimentary conflicts' destroying the delicate balance among id, ego, and super ego, and the need for sublimation.

The problem of this study was to determine if there were differences in principals' supervisory emphases and practices in school systems where the superintendent is appointed and in school systems where the superintendent is elected by popular vote. A total of three hundred principals was surveyed using a Supervisory Practices Inventory developed by Albert and Judith Canfield. The principals responded to questions about supervisory emphasis and practices. The supervisory emphases areas were people, tasks or results, paralleling those developed by Peter Drucker and George Odiorne. The other area of response was in supervisory practices. Three methods were measured by the …

The Use Of Mnemonic Strategies In Reading Comprehension, Karen F. Montgomery Aug 1985

The Use Of Mnemonic Strategies In Reading Comprehension, Karen F. Montgomery

Student Work

Research has generally shown that mnemonic techniques can improve the recall of poor readers. This experiment investigated the effect of verbal rehearsal and visual imagery strategies on the reading comprehension of 47 fourth-grade poor and average readers. The students were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: unaided, verbal rehearsal, visual imagery, and combined visual imagery plus verbal rehearsal. Subjects were taught a strategy (depending on the group assignment) and given a chance to practice. Following this, all subjects read a 1,000-word story. They were then given a 20-question test. As predicted, poor readers in the unaided condition recalled less …

Retrieval Of Divergent Lexical Definitions Of Homographs In Young, Mature And Elderly Adults., Barbara J. Gross

Student Work

The ability to communicate one's needs, desires and knowledge is a basic requirement for succeeding in society. It is an ability that is taken for granted by most individuals for whom mastery seemed automatic. The stages of language acquisition and development in young children have been extensively researched and documented. A wide range of semantic abilities of college freshman also have been investigated. Beyond the traditional college age, eighteen to twenty-two years, little normative data concerning functional language ability is available. Information pertinent to the evolution of language functioning across the adult lifespan would be useful in planning appropriate goals …

School District Reorganization: Review And Recommendations For Douglas County, Nebraska, Marvin Johnson Jul 1985

School District Reorganization: Review And Recommendations For Douglas County, Nebraska, Marvin Johnson

Student Work

School district reorganization is an ongoing process intended to enable school districts to best satisfy educational needs. Urban, suburban and rural schools encounter certain similar problems while attaining a district's optimum organization; not all are educational in nature. Peshkin (1982) suggests the school is a highly important focal point of community and personal identity. Considering such potentially significant emotions, it is not difficult to visualize community resistance to a school closing.
