Perceived Training Needs Of Principals In Northeast Tennessee: Analysis Of Data In Two Selected Years, Ann M. Little

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was to compare perceived training needs of public school administrators at two points in time and to analyze those needs as to age, sex, educational degree, and experience of respondents. The survey population consisted of public school principals in the 14 systems of the First Educational District in Northeast Tennessee. A descriptive research design was chosen for the study. A follow-up questionnaire was developed based on the 1986 Brown Survey which surveyed the same population for demographic and professional characteristics in addition to the perceived training needs of principals, superintendents, and school board members. A Demographic Evaluation Of The Certification Qualifications Of Secondary Science Teachers With Implications For School Administrators, Joan S. Bowen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This population study of the certification qualifications of the secondary science teachers of the Upper East Tennessee region in 1984-85 was conducted to determine if there was a qualification shortage in any science-teaching area at the beginning of the Comprehensive Education Reform Act (CERA). Data were obtained from the Tennessee State Department of Education Preliminary Report Forms for Staff. Subject certification data and 1984-85 teaching assignment were analyzed to find percentages of infield, out-of-field teaching and the size of the internal pool of active certificated science teachers who were not teaching. Results of these analyses were presented for each system …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Sentence-Combining Techniques On The Writing Of Individually Instructed Students In Beginning College Composition., Mary Jane Meehan Nov 1988

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Sentence-Combining Techniques On The Writing Of Individually Instructed Students In Beginning College Composition., Mary Jane Meehan

Student Work

For the past two decades, research in the teaching of writing has been examining writing as a process rather than the traditional rhetorical product. This positioning and public concern that students are not writing as well as they once did have led many high schools and colleges to establish writing laboratories where students in need of writing instruction can get a diagnosis of their writing and where a lab instructor will then prescribe exercises or techniques to improve the individual student's writing. Many businesses, too, have been unhappy with the poor quality of their employees' writing and have hired consultants …

A Profile Of Female School Administrators In The State Of Nebraska And Their Perceptions Of The Superintendency, Cathy J. Kyles

Student Work

Educational administration is a male-dominated field; one evident characteristic throughout research is that few women across the United States have secured the top management position of the school superintendent.

The Change Facilitators Stages of Concern Questionnaire (CFSoCQ) was the instrument selected as appropriate for the study. Permission was obtained from Dr. Gene Hall at the University of Florida to reproduce and administer the CFSoCQ. Implementing Educational Software And Evaluating Its Academic Effectiveness: Part Ii, Karen Jolicoeur, Dale E. Berger Oct 1988

Implementing Educational Software And Evaluating Its Academic Effectiveness: Part Ii, Karen Jolicoeur, Dale E. Berger

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

In Part I, published last month, we presented a successful classroom implementation plan for integrating educational software into elementary school classrooms. Implementing educational software successfully into classrooms is an essential prerequisite to achieving the second goal of the present research-evaluating how much students learned by using specific software programs. In Part II, we will measure how effective eight software programs were at teaching fifth grade students new fraction concepts and spelling words. In addition, we will examine the validity of teacher and student software ratings based on the effectiveness of each program.

Implementing Educational Software And Evaluating Its Academic Effectiveness: Part I, Karen Jolicoeur, Dale E. Berger

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Two major obstacles are responsible for the delay in getting good educational software into schools. First, software implementation is a complex process that many schools are simply not prepared to undertake. Second, there is very little empirical research available on the specific factors that make educational software effective, leaving it extremely difficult to separate good from poor quality software. We will describe a basic plan for implementing educational software into classrooms, incorporating a research design that permits educational researchers to measure the effectiveness of the software. Part I of this series of two articles presents a basic plan for implementing …

Twenty-five sixth graders are working in a classroom, with several different groups involved in a plethora of activities. A large group is working on software that is displayed on a big-screen monitor which has been hooked up to a computer via a coaxial cable, another group is working on a worksheet generated from a computer, still another group is being helped by the teacher, and the remaining individuals are independently working. Every single student is involved and interested. Learning is taking place. Half the children are black and the other half are mostly white. This is the type of classroom …

The Relationship Between The Farm Crisis And Rural Youth Achievement, John W. Brooke Jr. Aug 1988

The Relationship Between The Farm Crisis And Rural Youth Achievement, John W. Brooke Jr.

Student Work

Many Americans look at farm life with nostalgia and believe that farmers enjoy uncomplicated, secure and safe lives, that life is full of optimism and fun. However, in many time periods, the farmer has been forced to ride out economic crises. American History illustrates not only crisis, but also rebellions brought on primarily because of falling food prices. The first rebellion occurred in 1776 after the Revolutionary War. The second historical rebellion occurred between 1929 and 1932 when crop prices fell drastically and thousands of farms went bankrupt and were foreclosed on (Ross, 1986).

Peer Coaching: A Supplement To Administrative Evaluation, Mary Pat Shelledy Aug 1988

Peer Coaching: A Supplement To Administrative Evaluation, Mary Pat Shelledy

Student Work

The presence of high quality instructional skills in classrooms is a primary goal for school systems. Too often this goal is addressed in a hit-and-miss way by administrators who either don't have the time or don't possess the skills to help teachers maintain or acquire quality teaching skills. Some research has been done in the area of peer coaching as a means to specifically target the area of improved teaching skills, but few studies have been documented to see actual results of this type of program.

A Study Of The Correlation Of Theatrically Gifted Students, Creativity And Intelligence., Cathy Christensen Aug 1988

A Study Of The Correlation Of Theatrically Gifted Students, Creativity And Intelligence., Cathy Christensen

Student Work

A student gifted in the theater arts does not find it easy to be "an actor." Talent is a small part of the many factors necessary to go on the stage. The student needs a great deal of self-confidence and poise to go through lengthy and frequent auditions. No matter what age the student is, it is necessary to have vocal projection for great distances, clear diction, and the ability to show a spectrum of emotions. After going through the audition process, the chosen child needs an excellent memory, not only for his/her own part, but for his/her location on …

The Education Article Of The 1970 Constitution: Selected Policy Issues For Consideration And Debate At The Next Constitutional Convention, Douglas Anderson Jul 1988

The Education Article Of The 1970 Constitution: Selected Policy Issues For Consideration And Debate At The Next Constitutional Convention, Douglas Anderson

Northern Illinois University Law Review

The Education Article of the Illinois State Constitution, Article X, is one of the briefest in the document. Yet it deals with a subject which is of paramount importance to our society: the development of future generations of citizens--those who will be responsible for our democratic way of life, our culture in all its diversity, and the preservation and evolution of those values which underpin our society. This essay will devote its attention to Section 1, for statements of purpose and policy are often those most subject to ambiguity (deliberate or otherwise), to potential misinterpretation, and to the continued need …
