Process And Product In Prereferral Intervention: A Study Of Planning, Integrity, And Outcome., William Treen Mckee
Process And Product In Prereferral Intervention: A Study Of Planning, Integrity, And Outcome., William Treen Mckee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of the study was to obtain data on the intervention planning processes engaged in by prereferral intervention teams, primarily, through a focus on the verbal processes of teacher and committee team member interactions. Teacher and committee participation in the prereferral intervention planning process was operationalized in terms of the frequency of teacher and committee verbal interactions, in terms of numbers of questions, responses, and initiated comments made by each, as well as teacher and committee speaking time. Results of analysis of these data revealed that teachers asked few questions and initiated relatively few comments in comparison with their …
The Effects Of Community Building Group Process Intervention Technique On Reading Performance Among Inmates In A Medium Security Prison., Robert Earl Roberts
The Effects Of Community Building Group Process Intervention Technique On Reading Performance Among Inmates In A Medium Security Prison., Robert Earl Roberts
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A substantial body of research has shown that when students work together in groups and are rewarded based on the learning of all the groups members, they achieve consistently more than students who are in traditionally taught classes. The goal of this project was to test the effects of an innovative group process intervention technique on reading performance among a population of incarcerated adult males in a medium security prison in Louisiana. This model, referred to as "Community Building" (CBGP), has been utilized among other ways as an intervention technique to resolve organizational/personnel problems in private, business, university, and government …

Inaugural Professorial Lecture: "Education For Business: The Way I Saw It And The Way I See It", Val Pervan
Research outputs pre 2011
I feel honoured in being asked to give this address as one of the the University's foundation professors in 1991. I am grateful for this opportunity, particularly as it comes in the year of my retirement from full-time teaching and as Dean of the Faculty of Business of this University. The title of this talk, "EDUCATION FOR BUSINESS- THE WAY I SAW IT AND SEE IT", implies that much of what I am going to say this evening comes from personal experience of 32 years of involvement in the education of business students, that is, from 1960 through 1991. Besides …

Phonological Profile For The Hearing Impaired : Manual, Iris Vardi
Research outputs pre 2011
Anyone who deals with the speech of the hearing impaired is only too well aware of the wide range of speech problems that can present. Many of these problems have been thoroughly researched and documented. Toni Gold (1980), detailed the following characteristics of hearing impaired speech as revealed by the literature to that date:
(l) intelligibility problems;
(2) consonant errors relating to voicing, consonant omissions, position of consonant error in word, difficulties with consonant blends, effects of place of articulation;
(3) vowel and diphthong errors;
(4) suprasegmental errors including problems with rate, increased duration of phonemes, timing, pausing; and
(5) …
(1991) Children In Chaos: A Philosophy For Children Experience, Leonard Harris
(1991) Children In Chaos: A Philosophy For Children Experience, Leonard Harris
Collected Papers of Leonard Harris
A provocative encounter between two liberal models of education. John Dewey's model of education, developed as a philosophy for children program by Matthew Lipman, Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children, emphasizes dialogue in a community of inquiry. Carter G. Woodson's model of education emphasizes learning for the purpose of social "uplift," particularly the uplift of African Americans. The two emphases clash in the experience of a philosopher working with children and teachers in four Washington D.C. elementary schools.
The experiences of teachers, the dialogue of students, and the struggles of an elementary school administrator tell the story of …
The Role Of Public Schools In The Education Of 4-Year-Olds, Cheryl Lynnette Cavanaugh Grosvenor
The Role Of Public Schools In The Education Of 4-Year-Olds, Cheryl Lynnette Cavanaugh Grosvenor
Graduate Research Papers
A major educational issue in recent years is the role of public schools in the education of 4-year-olds (Day, 1988). This issue impacts all areas of society. It is a complex and emotional issue for teachers of young children, for parents, administrators, and officials in local, state, and federal governments.

Career Pathways Of Youth Work Graduates, Donna Taylor, Reggi Steele, Suzanna Olmelczuk, Rod Underwood
Research outputs pre 2011
A survey of the 49 youth work students who graduated from the Edith Cowan University in the years 1986 to 1988 was undertaken. Information was sought on the occupational destinations of graduates including the time taken to obtain a first appointment, impediments experienced' in attempting to gain a position, and perceived barriers to future career prospects. The study found that most graduates were able to obtain employment in the youth affairs field. However, it is clear that life is not easy for many youth workers for reasons such as low salaries, adverse working conditions, lack of professional status, and uncertain …

(1991) The Community Of Inquiry And Educational Structure., David K. Kennedy
Collected Papers of David Kennedy
Young people engaged in philosophical dialogue sometimes exhibit resistance to the program, expressed in boredom, impatience, and sometimes even rejection. My theory is that, in addition to a lot of reasons like the ones just cited, the problem has to do with the way schools and classrooms are structured, which in turn is the result of an overall educational model--what Matthew Lipman has referred to as "tribal" or "information-acquisition" education. I want to argue that there is a "new" educational model—in fact it is already about 200 years old—and that it has the strucmral characteristics which provide place for what …
A Handbook For Secondary Teachers Of Remedial Mathematics In Georgia, Diane Koart
A Handbook For Secondary Teachers Of Remedial Mathematics In Georgia, Diane Koart
Theses and Dissertations
Several changes affecting the context of mathematics education were identified in Reshaping School Mathematics (Mathematical Sciences Education Board National Research Council [MSEB], 1990). The need for mathematics has changed to demand a higher level of quantitative literacy. New mathematics has been discovered and types of mathematical applications have increased. The development of technology has impacted mathematics greatly. Greater mathematical skills are demanded in the work place. Better understanding of how students learn and changes in international competitiveness also affect mathematics education. These changes implied the need for a new practical philosophy of mathematics education as a basis for curricular reform. …
Lawyers And Liberations, Robert E. Rodes
Lawyers And Liberations, Robert E. Rodes

The Jesuit educational tradition stresses the importance of service to the community and especially to its underprivileged members. Much of the discussion at the Ignatian Year celebration held at St. Louis University centered on the role of the law school in the Jesuit educational tradition. However, I would like to propose that this discussion take on a much larger focus.
The ideas of community service, solidarity with the poor and professionalism within an ethical context, although integral to the Jesuit tradition, are relevant to society as a whole. Furthermore, integration of these concepts into law school education is merely a …
An Exploration Of The Determinants Of Attitude Toward Computers In Middle School Students, Earl Wayne Connell Edd
An Exploration Of The Determinants Of Attitude Toward Computers In Middle School Students, Earl Wayne Connell Edd
Dissertations
The educational world is belatedly rushing into the world of technology with relatively limited factual information concerning students' attitude toward computers. While most students have a positive attitude, research has indicated that the male is more positive than the female for various reasons. The purpose of this study was to investigate a diverse set of possible determinants of attitude toward computers including sex, ethnic background, learning style, and computer literacy. The subjects were 284 coeducational students from four ethnic backgrounds that attended three middle schools in San Diego. A requirement that subjects have two years of experience with computer assisted …

Character Education Through Secondary School Literature Classes, Mary Elizabeth Curfman
Character Education Through Secondary School Literature Classes, Mary Elizabeth Curfman
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Perhaps because of a lack of knowledge about American history and tradition, American youth are disconnected from society and feel little moral obligation or responsibility to others. While American public schools traditionally taught values and ethics, most no longer do so in any consistent or systematic fashion; This thesis will defend a synthesis of the thinking of certain influential moral philosophers and learning theorists on the nature of moral character and its development. Since its recommendations are for improving character education in public secondary school literature classes in the Clark County School District, Las Vegas, Nevada, the thesis will also …

A Study Of The Effects Of Prediction Activities On Instructional Outcomes In High School Genetics., Anne Spratlan Sinclair
A Study Of The Effects Of Prediction Activities On Instructional Outcomes In High School Genetics., Anne Spratlan Sinclair
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the instructional effects of incorporating prediction activities in a high school biology genetics curriculum. Criteria for instructional effectiveness included enhanced levels of classroom discussion and interaction, improved subject-related attitude, higher achievement motivation, and greater mastery of genetics concepts. Genetics was chosen as the domain of research because of the multiple variables operating which make it amenable to the making of predictions. Four experienced high school biology teachers taught an experimental and a control class. Students in the experimental classes made written predictions using researcher-developed prediction activities as an introduction to 19 genetics …
An Ethnographic Study Of Kindergarten Children's Literacy Skills And Stress-Related Behaviors Before And After Teacher Demonstration., Nancy Crossland Weems
An Ethnographic Study Of Kindergarten Children's Literacy Skills And Stress-Related Behaviors Before And After Teacher Demonstration., Nancy Crossland Weems
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this ethnographic research was to study kindergarten students' literacy skills and stress-related behaviors and a teacher's instructional behavior before and after demonstrations in appropriate bookreading strategies. A lower socio-economic setting, which previously had been identified by Burts, Hart, Charlesworth, and Kirk (1990a) as a developmentally inappropriate instructional environment, was selected for observation as one which might be amenable to change. The demonstrations included bookreading strategies that the kindergarten teacher could implement to promote the acquisition of literacy in ways that do not contribute to stress. Ethnographic data collection consisted of three months of participant observation in one …

Student Thought Processes And Quality Of Practice During Motor Skill Instruction., Melinda Ann Solmon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The focus of this study was the examination of relationships between initial skill level, observer estimates of attention, student thoughts, quality of practice, and achievement during motor skill instruction. Specifically, the following questions were addressed: (1) What is the relationship between observed student behavior to quality of practice and achievement? (2) What is the relationship between student reports of their cognitive processes to quality of practice and achievement? (3) Does written self-report data produce the same information as data collected during stimulated recall interviews? and (4) Are student self-report data about attention consistent with observer estimates of overt student behavior? …

Prewriting, Drafting, And Revision In Large Scale Writing Assessment. (Volumes I And Ii)., Arthur Marshall Halbrook
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine prewriting, drafting, and revision in a large scale writing assessment. In April 1989, Louisiana administered a graduation exit examination. Written composition comprised one of the three testing components. From the 40,000 tenth grade students who participated in the written composition test, a stratified sampling of 1,467 was selected for this study. Using a research design incorporating both quantitative and qualitative assessment procedures, the study examined prewriting, drafting, and revision practices at two levels. In Level I, the first and final drafts of the 1,467 students were analyzed using a scoring model derived …
An Analysis Of Educational Films: An African-American Perspective. (Volumes I And Ii)., Brenda Garibaldi Hatfield
An Analysis Of Educational Films: An African-American Perspective. (Volumes I And Ii)., Brenda Garibaldi Hatfield
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Historically African-Americans have been marginalized and subordinated in critical discourse and research in curriculum studies and educational media. There is a vital need for research directed toward African-Americans as subjects and viewers of media used in school curricula. Cultural theorists in curriculum and educational media studies are interested in knowing how social, political and ideological messages are produced and circulated in society, and how student audiences use them to make sense of their experiences. The purpose of this research is to contribute to a better understanding of how racial representations and social identities are coded and produced in educational films, …
Louisiana Principals' Perceptions Of Nontraditional Vocational Teachers And The Importance Of Vocational Education., Moo Yul Huh
Louisiana Principals' Perceptions Of Nontraditional Vocational Teachers And The Importance Of Vocational Education., Moo Yul Huh
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Even though the elimination of sex bias and stereotyping has been a national priority in vocational education for a number of years, many educators or administrators still hold sex biased and stereotyped attitudes about labor force participation and have a belief that there are "men's" and "women's" jobs. A study of sources affecting sex bias and sex stereotyping of vocational teachers is critical to provide more productive programs. The local school principal typically has the greatest impact on school level employment decisions because the principal is the chief executive officer or administrator of the basic unit in the school system. …
School Centralization And Organizational Effectiveness: The Role Of Teacher Alienation., Bobby L. Johnson Jr
School Centralization And Organizational Effectiveness: The Role Of Teacher Alienation., Bobby L. Johnson Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The focus of educational reform in recent years has shifted to the restructuring of schools. Many reformers have defined restructuring in terms of the decentralization of power within schools (Elmore et al., 1990). Yet, there is little research to suggest how such decentralization will affect teachers and improve schools. Given this scarcity, the purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between the degree of centralized decision-making which exists in a school, teachers' cognitive and affective work alienation, and multiple indices of school effectiveness. Such relationships were examined within the context of Seeman's (1972) framework of social change as …
"Spades Players" And "Senators": An Ethnography Of Black Subcultures In A Community College., Anthony Louis Molina Sr
"Spades Players" And "Senators": An Ethnography Of Black Subcultures In A Community College., Anthony Louis Molina Sr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This ethnographic study of Black community college students, in a predominantly white community college, took place over a three-year period and focused on two groups. One group, the spades players, neglected their studies in favor of the card game spades, which they made the central activity of their family-like collective in the student commons. The other group, Black senators in the Student Government Association, were academic achievers who performed service to the college. By immersion into both cultures, the researcher gained the confidence of individual students in both groups, interviewed them in various settings, and looked for reasons behind the …

Curriculum Reform From Multicultural Perspectives: The Analysis Of An Urban School District's Systemic Process. (Volumes I And Ii)., Linda Johnson Stelly
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Crises in the economic and social conditions of the underrepresented have led to the analysis of education and the schooling process for responses to and explanations for these inequalities. The purpose of this ethnographically informed, autobiographic case study is to examine the relational and contradictory dynamics of an urban southern school district's systemic process of educational reform from multicultural perspectives. The case study examines the rules, roles and relationships of key change agents and stakeholders as they define education from multicultural perspectives in the process of change. The research further examines the developmental processes necessary to transform the existing curriculum …
What's "Appropriate"?: Finding A Voice For Deaf Children And Their Parents In The Education For All Handicapped Children Act, Suzanne J. Shaw
What's "Appropriate"?: Finding A Voice For Deaf Children And Their Parents In The Education For All Handicapped Children Act, Suzanne J. Shaw
Seattle University Law Review
Initially, the Comment briefly reviews the EAHCA's purpose and its legislative history, and describes the workings of its administrative procedures. The Comment then examines the seminal case interpreting the EAHCA, Board of Education v. Rowley, as it applies to the parents' role in a deaf child's education. This section of the Comment also explores the meaning currently given to "free appropriate education" and "least restrictive environment" (LRE), as well as the natural, and possibly irresolvable, tension between these requirements. Against this background, Section III of this Comment then sets out the Act's unique impact on deaf children. This impact …
Human Service: A Framework For Education And Practice, Hyung Shik Kim, Roderic Underwood
Human Service: A Framework For Education And Practice, Hyung Shik Kim, Roderic Underwood
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper sets out to deal with two main themes. The first theme considers the historical, political and social forces in human service delivery which were instrumental in the gradual recognition of human service as a field of academic study and practice. The paper firmly locates human services in organisational and administrative settings, in contrast to therapeutic or clinical orientations of the established helping professions.
The second theme deals with the domain of human services by incorporating the value commitment to meeting human needs. The normative position identifies human service as a field of study and practice which cuts across …
A Study Of Metacognitive Skill As Influenced By Expressive Writing In College Introductory Algebra Classes., Naomi Barbara R Allen
A Study Of Metacognitive Skill As Influenced By Expressive Writing In College Introductory Algebra Classes., Naomi Barbara R Allen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The quality of mathematics education has become a major concern to mathematics educators. As a result, increased attention is being given to identifying the abilities that underlie competent performance. An outcome of this effort is an increasing belief that the development of metacognitive skills is an essential component of proficient mathematics performance. Writing, because it promotes reflective thinking, is believed to be the vehicle for this development. Writing in the mathematics classroom has previously received anecdotal support for its benefits to the learner and to the instructor, and limited quantitative benefits in problem-solving ability toward mathematics. This study examined the …
Managing Change In Schools: A Review Of The Western Australian Project, Rod Chadbourne
Managing Change In Schools: A Review Of The Western Australian Project, Rod Chadbourne
Research outputs pre 2011
In 1987, the Ministry of Education released a report entitled 'Better Schools in Western Australia: A Program for Improvement'.l It outlined radical proposals to make schools more self-determining and accountable. Although much of the program has yet to be put into effect, the plan and steps taken to implement it caused a major upheaval not only to the system but also to people working in it. For example: the managers of change invested a huge amount of work and worry in the whole process; some of the 'victims' of change suffered personally and professionally; and a lot of those in …

Acquiring Vocabulary In A Foreign Language: Some Effects Of The Nature Of Instruction On The Knowledge And Use Of Words., Louise Stowell-Ruzicka
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect that the nature of instruction of French vocabulary words has on student knowledge and use of the words on five different measures: a definition recognition test, a cloze plus word bank test, a comprehension of a text containing the words, a writing assignment designed to elicit free use of these words and a test of overall reading proficiency. Eighty-one high school students in the second year course of French constituted three treatment groups: (1) traditional instruction where students were required to learn a list of 12 words paired with their …
