Scheduling In The Middle School: The Effects Of Transition From A Junior High School To Middle School On Scheduling, Larry Cusic May 1991

Scheduling In The Middle School: The Effects Of Transition From A Junior High School To Middle School On Scheduling, Larry Cusic

Student Work

Middle level education bridge's the gap between elementary school and high school. The term is used to describe all programs that deal with a combinations of grades 5-9 and youngsters from 10 to 14 years of age. The effectiveness of middle level education depends upon the degree to which the schools respond to the developmental needs and characteristics of students at that age. These are the "prime" years, the years during which one's value system, one's behavior, and one's self esteem are consolidated. When the adolescent leaves the middle level school, his or her personality and personal values are largely …

The Effects Of Cultural Diversity Training On The Performance Of Educators., Sandra K. Slobotski

Student Work

This paper will examine the positive effects of indepth course work on ethnic and cultural minoritites as experienced by educators. These positive effects benefit both the educator and the student population as a whole. This increased sensitivity and understanding will translate into positive effects for all students in the classroom. Racial and cultural minority students will benefit from a more positive learning environment, thus affecting self-concept and ultimately achievment. …

Elementary Teachers' Concerns About Teaching Science Using The Hands-On Method, Michael A. Foyt May 1991

Elementary Teachers' Concerns About Teaching Science Using The Hands-On Method, Michael A. Foyt

Student Work

As we move into the 90's, recent studies have made it very clear that the United States is falling behind both national standards and international norms in the effort to make its youth literate in science. When viewing studies that compare our students internationally, we rank near the bottom in science (Project 2061, 1989). Very few elementary teachers have an adequate science background (Stefanich & Kelsey, 1989). As a consequence, elementary science teachers teach science infrequently and often emphasize the memorization of answers rather than learning exploration skills. This type of instruction and over dependence on textbooks can actually impede …

No significant differences were found in the total scores for all three groups. The …

Seven null hypotheses were formulated; 5 were retained and 2 rejected, at the.05 level of significance. Factor …

Education Equity And Taxpayer Equity: A Review Of The Alaska Public School Foundation Funding Program, Eric Larson, Matthew Berman

ISER Reports

The Alaska Legislature asked ISER to examine what has driven up costs of Alaska's school districts in the past two decades, and to assess how the state's School Foundation Program could better achieve both taxpayer and education equity. This summary describes what we studied, reports how much specific categories of school costs went up and why, and outlines our conclusions and suggestions about taxpayer and education equity and the foundation program. We examined changes in the major categories of school operating costs over the past two decades. We studied operations spending not only because it makes up most of school …

Assessing The Effectiveness Of The Change To Technology Teacher Education, Dan L. Householder, Richard A. Boser Apr 1991

Assessing The Effectiveness Of The Change To Technology Teacher Education, Dan L. Householder, Richard A. Boser

Engineering Education Faculty Publications

Many institutions which formerly pre-pared teachers of industrial arts are currently implementing technology teacher education programs. As these institutions change to implement technology teacher education, it is important to obtain an accurate assessment of the effectiveness of the innovation. Change in the teacher education curriculum may be assessed in a number of possible ways, each with several potential advantages. However, there is no generally accepted model for assessing the overall effectiveness of such a major change in technology teacher education. To address this problem, a study was undertaken to develop and verify a set of measures that could be used …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Magnet School Student Selection On Student Achievement And Student Attitudes Toward School, Suzanne Mrzlak Melliger Apr 1991

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Magnet School Student Selection On Student Achievement And Student Attitudes Toward School, Suzanne Mrzlak Melliger

Student Work

Magnet schools appear to be one alternative to the question of how society can desegregate the public school systems. The need to desegregate became apparent in 1954 when the Supreme Court ruled in the Brown v. Topeka Board of Education 347 US 483, 74 S.Ct. 686, 98 L.Ed. 873 (1954) landmark case that separate is not equal and public school systems must be desegregated. The magnet school is a means to achieve desegregation through voluntary choice. School systems officials charged with the task of creating alternatives, could create an attractive magnet school that was more appealing than sending children on …

The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 1991-02-08, Wooster Voice Editors Feb 1991

The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 1991-02-08, Wooster Voice Editors

The Voice: 1991-2000

In this edition of the Wooster Voice, the first page has an article explaining to students that Soup and Bread might be canceled. Soup and Bread is a program that allows students to easily donate money to different charities through eating soup and bread once a week. In order to keep the program running, they need a minimum of 350 participants, but the program kept missing the quota of participants. The article served as a call to action in some way, asking more students to join the program and keep it running. Halfway through the paper, there is a full …
