Seasonal Assessment Of Oral Reading Rate Obtained By Rural Elementary Students, Teresa R. Oswald

Student Work

Seasonal assessments of oral reading rates were obtained from rural first and second grade elementary students. The rates were obtained by administering reading probes selected from the school's curriculum and administered during the fall, winter, and spring months. The obtained rates were then compared to establish prescriptive for frustration, instructional, and mastery level reading standards. The results indicated that the first grade participants were significantly below frustration and mastery reading levels for the fall and winter assessments respectively. However, the first grade participants' were significantly above the mastery level prescriptive during the spring assessment. The second grade participants were at …

Adult Female Students' Perceptions Of Their First-Year, Portfolio-Based, Distance Writing Course, Elizabeth Goodrid Westgard

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Seeking to learn what adult female students found valuable in their first-year college writing course in a distance program, this study used qualitative content analysis and constant comparative analysis to examine reflective journals submitted with completed writing portfolios. Using optical character recognition software, the journals were scanned into a Macintosh computer and imported into the Data Collector, a software tool designed for coding and analyzing qualitative data. Outcomes of the analysis, integrated with the researcher's insights, were used to evaluate the course and to create knowledge transferrable to other undergraduate courses for adults. Four major themes emerged: gratitude for new …

Academic Bankruptcy Policies In Higher Education, Gail Marie Jones Jan 1996

Academic Bankruptcy Policies In Higher Education, Gail Marie Jones

Graduate Research Papers

A college degree is a virtual necessity in today's world. More and more employers are looking for individuals who have completed at least two years of postsecondary education at a community college or elsewhere, or who hold a bachelor's degree. What happens to those individuals who attended college in the past but had a poor academic record? A poor choice of major selection, previous academic probation or suspension, or the need for time to mature socially and/or intellectually are but a few of the reasons why some students will need extra semesters to achieve an acceptable grade point average in …

Enhancing Student Leadership Of Volunteer Organizations: A Guide For New Leaders, Valerie Shapiro Eagen Jan 1996

Enhancing Student Leadership Of Volunteer Organizations: A Guide For New Leaders, Valerie Shapiro Eagen

Graduate Research Papers

The importance of student participation in cocurricular activities during the college years has been drawing increasing support and empirical evidence has been presented that supports the critical, positive relationship between involvement and overall student development (Astin, 1993; Baxter Magolda, 1992; Cooper, Healy, & Simpson, 1994). Theorists within the field of college student development incorporate this assertion into the models they put forth for utilization by student affairs practitioners. Chickering and Reisser (1993) maintain that an individual student's growth occurs upon mastering developmental tasks, and that it is the role of student affairs practitioners to create an environment which presents opportunities …

Orientation: Meeting The Needs Of Students, Robin Jean Bennett Jan 1996

Orientation: Meeting The Needs Of Students, Robin Jean Bennett

Graduate Research Papers

Orientation is defined as an adjustment or adaptation to a new environment, situation, custom, or set of ideas. It is also defined as introductory instruction concerning a new situation. These definitions aptly apply to college orientation purposes and goals; however, the process of orientation has gone far beyond this in its scope and usage in the modern college setting. The first orientation course on record was at Boston University in 1888 while the first known course offered for credit was established at Reed College in 1911. Orientation programs have grown steadily in depth and scope since that time. The creators …

The Nature Of Status In Sport Teams, C Shanthi Jacob Jan 1996

The Nature Of Status In Sport Teams, C Shanthi Jacob

Digitized Theses

Status--the importance/prestige which is possessed by or accorded to individuals by virtue of their position in relation to others--plays an important role in group dynamics (Shaw, 1981). In the sport sciences, however, research on this concept is minimal. Thus, three studies were carried out to examine the nature of status among athletes in sport teams.;Studies 1 and 2 examined the relationship of the perceptions of status attributes and status rank to cohesion. Canadian (112 intercollegiate and 64 secondary school) and Indian (47 intercollegiate and 62 secondary school) athletes were tested.;The methodology adopted in Studies 1 and 2 were similar. In …

Group Influences And Social Physique Anxiety In Exercise And Sport, Diane Elizabeth Mack Jan 1996

Group Influences And Social Physique Anxiety In Exercise And Sport, Diane Elizabeth Mack

Digitized Theses

Social physique anxiety (SPA) has become a construct of interest in research designed to explore the influence of self-presentation in exercise (Crawford & Eklund, 1994: Eklund & Crawford, 1994; McAuley, Bane & Mihalko, 1995; Spink, 1992) and athletic contexts (Mack & Martin, 1994; McAuley & Burman, 1993). SPA refers to the anxiety experienced by individuals who perceive that their physique will be negatively evaluated by others (Hart, Leary & Rejeski, 1989). Despite this recent attention, the influence of the nature of the group on SPA has been largely ignored. Disregarding the potential impact of the group may be a methodological …

Effects Of Aging And Strength Training On Shortening And Lengthening Muscle Actions In Women, Michelle Marie Porter

Digitized Theses

There has been much research on strength changes with aging and the consequent effects of resistance training, however, relatively little is known about lengthening (eccentric; ECC) muscle actions. The purposes of these studies were to develop a method of testing and training plantar (PF) and dorsiflexion (DF) of the ankle in a standing position in order to investigate age-related and training effects on shortening (concentric; CONC) and ECC peak torque (PT) in women.;All subjects were healthy and physically active, and performed all testing and training on an isokinetic dynamometer. Strength testing was performed in both standing and supine positions at …
