The Effect Of An Educational Intervention On Adolescents' Knowledge And Attitudes About Violence, Jean E. Szorady
MSN Research Projects
Violent injury is among the leading causes of death in adolescents. Adolescents' immaturity and underdeveloped impulse control put them at risk of acting rashly, thus at higher risk for violent injury. This significant public health problem is a preventive objective of Healthy People 2000. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an educational intervention on adolescents' knowledge and attitudes about violence. The nurse practitioner in a school or family clinic is in a unique position to intervene with adolescent clients using an educational intervention. Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory served as the theoretical framework for the research. …

Education Through Architecture: Carnival And Merengue Museum, Andres Pastoriza
Architecture Thesis Prep
"This thesis examines the ability of architecture to educate through experience. Architecture creates environments which represents the history, folklore, and tradition of a region by way of semantics. individuals interact with the building and become part of it by providing their knowledge and recollection of the signs and symbols. Through the representation of symbols and the recreation of events, the building evokes the collective memory of the individuals who experience them. Folklore relies heavily on experience, as does architecture. The interaction of event, program, space, and form result in architecture that provides all the elements necessary to educate folklore. The Efficacy Of Teaching Conflict Resolution, Joan E. Grigaitis
Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of Conflict Resolution Programs in an elementary school. The question to be studied was whether incidents of disciplinary referrals would be reduced after implementing a Conflict Resolution Program. The entire student population of Simpson Elementary School for the academic years 1994-1995 and 1995-1996 served as subjects for this study. Disciplinary referrals were tallied for the students for the 1994-1995 academic year (i.e., the "control" group or prior to the Conflict Resolution Program). A Conflict Resolution Program was implemented coincident with the start of the 1995-1996 academic year. Disciplinary referrals were …
The Use Of Guided Reading Strategies By Second-Grade Students In A Regular Classroom Setting, Jaime Mayer
The Use Of Guided Reading Strategies By Second-Grade Students In A Regular Classroom Setting, Jaime Mayer
Student Work
Guided reading, a context in which a teacher supports a reader's development of effective strategies for processing texts at increasingly challenging levels of difficulty, is a relatively new practice in the field of education. A review of current literature indicates that little research has been conducted which identifies the results of incorporating guided reading instruction into the curriculum. The purpose of this research was to investigate the use of guided reading strategies by second-grade students as they read in an independent setting as well as one-one-one with their teacher. Three second-grade students were chosen as case participants learned and used …

The Effects On Third Grade Students' Learning When Discipline–Based Arts And Social Studies Curricula Are Integrated, Linda K. Kulm
Student Work
This study examines the effects on third grade urban students when taught the social studies curriculum integrated with discipline-based arts curriculum. Three students were randomly chosen to represent high, moderate, and low ability levels. This is a qualitative research project using a triangulation of data, namely observation, interview, and analysis of products. The findings suggest that the integration of a discipline-based arts curriculum with a social studies curriculum enhances student learning, interest, and production. This method also allows students and teachers to identify learning styles and specific intelligences.

Using Hortbase In Education, Roger Kjelgren, Larry Rupp
Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications
Computer technology allows horticultural educators to convey information more flexibly and visually to a greater audience. However, accessing and making use of technological teaching tools is as much a hurdle as it is an opportunity. HortBase provides the framework for educators in horticulture to easily access and contribute to quality chunks of horticultural educational by computer. Engaging computer-based instruction such as HortBase in distance or on-campus teaching is a three-step process. First, before assembling the teaching material, the educator must decide on who the target audience is and what information to convey. Audiences on campus often have higher expectations of …

A Sociolinguistic Survey Of Bilingual Education Among The Shipibo Of Amazonian Peru, Kathleen Ann Tacelosky
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
In the 1950s, the trend worldwide in public education was for classes to be conducted in the national (prestige) language. In Amazonian Peru however, an alternative was being considered: Bilingual Education (BE). Since monolingual education in Spanish in Peru had been unsuccessful, the government was looking for a way to educate indigenous Peruvians. Therefore, the government of Peru, together with the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL), implemented a BE program that incorporates vernacular indigenous languages and Spanish. The BE experiment was designed on a transition model: children are introduced to school and new concepts and skills such as reading in …
