Early Childhood Education: The Disadvantaged Child: How Early Is Early?, Eileen O'Neill
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
This paper is influenced by many years of work in residential services for children in need. My experience has spanned the changing nature of residential care, from the group home model of the 1970 and 1980's - which provided long term care to children, apart from their family, with little or no family contact, - to the more individualised care offered in units today for children with very specific needs, for short periods of time, usually in conjunction with their own families. This is in keeping with the spirit of the Child Care Act (1991). Children admitted to care are …

Effects Of 4 X 4 Block Scheduling On Student Discipline, Faculty Collegiality, And Obstacles To Teaching In Louisiana High Schools., Mary Helen Smith Mccoy
Effects Of 4 X 4 Block Scheduling On Student Discipline, Faculty Collegiality, And Obstacles To Teaching In Louisiana High Schools., Mary Helen Smith Mccoy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
During the last decade, the allocation of time emerged as an important reform initiative in secondary schools. For nearly a century, secondary school students attended approximately six to seven classes daily. In the early 1990s, more flexible scheduling configurations were proposed, including block scheduling. One block scheduling format, known as 4 x 4, allows students to attend four classes daily for 90-minute blocks of time. Block scheduling advocates claimed benefits for students, teachers, instructional innovation, and school climate, but provided little empirical base for these claims. The present study examined the effects of 4 x 4 block scheduling on four …

Parental Participation In A Title I Family Literacy Program: Results From A Mixed -Model Study., Karen Boudreaux
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A family literacy, Title I program was studied to determine the attitudes and beliefs which affect parental participation in a family literacy program. The theoretical framework of cultural capitol assumed that parents who chose to participate in a family literacy program possess different components in their cultural capitol than parents who choose not to participate. There were 3 Hypotheses and 6 Study Questions which guided this parallel mixed model study with dominant (qualitative)-less dominant (quantitative) design. A Title I Family Literacy Program located in a large, urban, public school system was the study site. The sample size consisted of 40 …

All Graduate Projects
The purpose of this study was to aid both pre-service and in-service teachers in solving the dilenuna of whether or not to touch students in the classroom environment. The harmful effects and consequences of the use of inappropriate touch by teachers, which tend to cause teachers and administrators to say, "Hands off!", were examined. However, numerous studies were researched which support the use of appropriate touch in teaching children. In addition, educators from fourteen schools in North Central Washington were surveyed to determine the consensus of whether or not teachers today continue to employ touch and for what purposes. The …

Developing A Vibrant Model For Improving The Quality Of Elementary Education In Pakistan, Muhammad Memon
Developing A Vibrant Model For Improving The Quality Of Elementary Education In Pakistan, Muhammad Memon
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
The public education system of Pakistan mostly offers children a prescriptive catalogue of knowledge what Freire (1972) calls it a 'banking concept' in education. Hawes and Stephens (1990) argue that today's schools and children are invariably the victim of yesterday's system. During the last three decades, the quality of education has become a serious concern among the policy makers and donor agencies. In general terms, quality is defined in term of efficiency in achieving the desired students learning outcomes predetermined in the policies. In Pakistan, three types of education reforms namely efficiency; quality; curricularbased (Riddell, 1998) were launched but these …

Awakening Genius In The Classroom By Thomas Armstrong, Jacqueline Collier Ph.D.
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
In a world of inclusion and acceptance, of diversity and uniqueness, and of looking at the individual strengths of each child in an educational setting, it is only fitting that we look to the "genius" of each learner. The use of the term "genius" in this context redefines the usual perspectives and asks us to stretch our understanding to include the potential capabilities of every learner and what it is that they bring with them to make a unique individual worth developing. In his book Awakening Genius in the Classroom, Thomas Armstrong coaxes each reader to examine his or her …

Reconceptualizing The Role Of Headteachers As Pedagogical Leaders In Pakistan: Implications For Policy Reforms, Muhammad Memon
Reconceptualizing The Role Of Headteachers As Pedagogical Leaders In Pakistan: Implications For Policy Reforms, Muhammad Memon
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
Since its independence, Pakistan has launched a series of education reforms, which are either related to curriculum development or teacher education, but no effort has yet been made to address the issues relating to recognition of headteachers' role within the framework of educational management development (Memon, et aI. 1999). However currently the government of Pakistan seems to be cognizant of the importance of professional development of headteachers and others who are responsible for improving the quality of education in schools (Government of Pakistan, 1998). Literature in the area of educational management suggests that schools cannot function effectively without the dynamic …

An Empirical Test Of A Structural Model Of The Dispositional Antecedents Of Motivation To Improve Work Through Learning., Sharon Smith Naquin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The development and success of employee training programs necessitates employer awareness of the individual differences of their employees that contribute to their motivation to improve work through learning. And, because of the potential benefits associated with employees who are highly trained, employee motivation to improve work through learning should be a chief concern within organizations. Therefore, a better understanding of the relationship between personality type, affectivity, values, level of work commitment and motivation will provide organizations with valuable insights that will enhance training efforts and contribute to the competitiveness and success of organizations. The purpose of this study was to …
