The Effect Of Social Support And Health Behavior On Psychosocial Adjustment Of Coronary Heart Disease Patients, Theresa Annette Drewniak
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine whether three aspects of social support and four aspects of health behavior would significantly predict psychosocial adjustment in patients with coronary heart disease. The participants were recruited from two cardiologists' offices. One-hundred thirty-one patients completed four questionnaires. Due to exclusionary criteria, 80 were selected for the data analysis. The UCLA Social Support inventory was used to assess three domains of social support. The Health Behavior Scale assessed four domains of health behavior. Psychosocial adjustment was assessed using the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale-Self Report. The hypothesis that three domains of social support …

Elementary Classroom Placement Of Multiples, Robin Keller Shamsaie
Elementary Classroom Placement Of Multiples, Robin Keller Shamsaie
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Parents of multiples seek practical advice in parenting. One area of great concern expressed by parents of multiples is in appropriate classroom placement decisions for their children. A great deal of anecdotal literature and folklore exists, which suggests placement in separate classrooms is best, so that each multiple can develop as an individual, rather than part of a set. There is, however, no research that supports the appropriateness or effectiveness of this belief. Research does support the merit of assessing each case individually when making classroom placement recommendations (Emmons, 1976; Dreyer, 1991; Hay, 1991; LeRoux, 1992; Segal, 1992). This study …
Understanding Conflict And Human Capacity: The Role Of Premises In Mediation Training, Robert A. Baruch Bush, Sally G. Pope
Understanding Conflict And Human Capacity: The Role Of Premises In Mediation Training, Robert A. Baruch Bush, Sally G. Pope
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
In this article, the authors, point out that underlying mediator practices and techniques, there are deeper premises and values that guide and shape practice. The authors argue that mediation training should include articulation and explanation of the premises that underlie the transformative orientation to mediation practice and give examples of how these premises can be conveyed within an overall training design, and how doing so enriches the teaching of skills and techniques themselves.

Hong Kong Higher Education In Transition: The Academic Community's Perception At The Time Of 1997 Retrocession, Jiyu Yang
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to ascertain the perceptions of selected faculty and academic administrators of the 1997 retrocession of Hong Kong to China with respect to the dual challenge of Hong Kong higher education assisting with the modernization of socialist Mainland China while maintaining its function supporting the capitalist system in Hong Kong. Twenty-five selected faculty and academic administrators in two representative universities of Hong Kong were interviewed at the eve of the retrocession. Four related themes were investigated in the interviews: the implications of “one country, two systems,” the ability of the Hong Kong higher education system …
Aboriginal Students Perceptions Of The Effect Of Vocational Education And Training On Post School Experiences, Steven J. Florisson
Aboriginal Students Perceptions Of The Effect Of Vocational Education And Training On Post School Experiences, Steven J. Florisson
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Over the past decade there have been dramatic and unprecedented changes in post compulsory education, with an increase of over 40% for year 12 retention rates to 76.6% in 1992 and huge expansion of year 11 and 12 vocational education and training programs. However, for Aboriginal past compulsory age students, the picture is very different. In 1993 the year 12 Aboriginal retention rate was only 24.48% or 982 students (Australia wide), and by 1996 only 10% of the indigenous 15 and older population had any post school qualification, compared to 35% of the total population. Only 34% of West Australian …
The Framing Of Truancy : A Study Of Non-Attendance Policy As A Form Of Social Exclusion Within Western Australia, Jan Gray
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Truancy is a product of socially constructed knowledge. The final product of this knowledge provides insight into the defining features of current societal beliefs, values and fears, becoming a powerful framing influence for definitions of acceptable patterns of school attendance and behaviour. In this sense, the perceived incidence of truancy within a community has far more impact on the creation and enactment of public policy associated with young people who do not regularly attend school than the incidence itself. This does not deny the incidence of truancy, nor the empirical data indicating correlates of truancy, illiteracy, crime, poverty and unemployment. …
What Counts As Accountability? : Towards An Accountability Framework For The Pre-Primary, Lennie Barblett
What Counts As Accountability? : Towards An Accountability Framework For The Pre-Primary, Lennie Barblett
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Accountability in the pre-primary year has become a focus for attention as schools develop corporate school plans. Pre-primary teachers can no longer work in isolation and are required to implement the school development plan in order to account for their portion of the school's work. This study aimed to find out how pre-primary teachers accounted for their educational programs and what factors influenced their accountability notions and practices. The study conducted in Western Australia used an ecological theoretical framework. Data was collected using multi-modal techniques and analysed using an interpretive-constructivist approach. Three case studies, a questionnaire and focus groups of …
Black And White Undergraduate Resident University Students' Stages Of Intercultural Sensitivity And Racial Identity At Indiana State University, Kenneth Darryl Coopwood
Black And White Undergraduate Resident University Students' Stages Of Intercultural Sensitivity And Racial Identity At Indiana State University, Kenneth Darryl Coopwood
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The summary report of the 1996 climate study conducted at Indiana State University revealed that the campus could appropriately be termed chillyâ€. The study further revealed that only 54% of Black students and 74.9% of White students would recommend the university to another potential student. The ability to survive in chilly†climates has many determinants rooted in students' ability to identify with self (Tatum, 1997). However, since there were no or inaccurate references to student present identities, retention-based programmatic developments thought to be central to student perceptions of campus life were perceived to be in vain. The use of cognitive …
Effectiveness Of The Infusion Of Reading Component Model Based Remedial Reading Instruction On The Reading Achievement Of Students In Learning Disabilities And Title I Remedial Reading Programs, Sonja O'Lita Frantz
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study tested the effectiveness of the infusion of remedial reading instruction, derived from the Reading Component Model, on the reading achievement of children in learning disabilities and Title I classrooms. The Reading Component Model is based on the premise that the reading process is composed of two major components, word recognition and comprehension, and poor functioning of either component can affect reading performance. Remedial instruction based on the component model focuses and tailors instruction on the weak component. In contrast, the discrepancy model, a model that is predominant in U.S. schools, classifies students into two categories: those with …

Influence Of Home And School Environments On The Academic Performance Of Chinese-Australian And Anglo-Australian Students Studying At An Academically-Oriented High School In Perth, Western Australia, Ranbir Singh Malik
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Although minority status has been associated with low academic achievement, the “high Asian achieving syndrome" remains as one of the unresolved sociological puzzles. Consistent evidence suggests that regardless of the family status, children from the Asian migrant families, settled in the industrialised countries, tend to perform academically better than their counterparts from the dominant group. This disparity is attributed to a number of factors, which taken separately, do not address this complex issue. In Australia little research has been done to compare the home environment and school experiences of children coming from Chinese-Australian and Anglo-Australian families even though the number …

A sample of 425 teachers was non-randomly selected from five PDS sites; 171 teachers completed and …
Alcohol Consumption Patterns, Death Attitudes, And Personal Meaning Among College Women, Christopher Hugh Nolan
Alcohol Consumption Patterns, Death Attitudes, And Personal Meaning Among College Women, Christopher Hugh Nolan
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Viktor Frankl's logotheory proposes that personal meaning in life and the attitudes people hold toward their own subjective mortality play important mediating roles in the way individuals choose to view and conduct their lives. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of Frankl's existential model in explaining problem drinking among college women by determining whether there are group differences in personal meaning and death attitudes as a function of alcohol consumption patterns. The sample consisted of 154 college women whose patterns of alcohol consumption allowed for participant classification into one of three groups: (a) non-drinkers (n = …

Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations
This book was prepared over a period of two years. Most of us have worked together previously as members of an advisory committee for “College Age Youth,” a W.K. Kellogg Foundation initiative to develop leadership abilities in college undergraduates at 31 institutions. That program demostrated that colleges and universities can provide highly effective environments for the development of future leaders (Zimmerman-Oster & Burkhardt, 1999). The idea of writing a book that could address the application of transformative leadership to higher education was first conceived in November 1997. However, work on the book did not begin until the Spring of 1998. …
Regular Teachers' Attitudes To The Need For Additional Classroom Support For Integrated Students With Intellectual Disabilities, Rory Mcnally
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The purpose of this study was to examine regular classroom teachers' attitudes to additional classroom support, both physical and personnel, for students with mild and severe intellectual disabilities who may be integrated into regular classrooms. The concerns of the regular classroom teachers with regard to the successful inclusion of students with intellectual disabilities are certainly merit addressing. As the regular classroom teachers are largely responsible for the education of these integrated students, it is worthwhile to examine their perceived support levels in relation to integrated students with intellectual disabilities. It is anticipated that the results of this study will prove …

The Effects Of The Provision Of An Interactive Teaching Program And Word Processors On The Writing Of Year 9 Students With Learning Disabilities, Cecily Cropley
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Three male year nine students with learning disabilities were given an intervention program that involved use of a word processor to write science fiction stories. The program was conducted over a five-week period. The effects of the use of the word processor alone were compared to the effects of the provision of an interactive teaching course program in conjunction with a word processor. The treatment program was a single subject treatment design. One participant's writing improved to an equal extent whether or not an interactive teaching program was provided. A second participant's fluency, spelling and the number of unique words …
Conceptions Of Learning Identified By Indigenous Students Entering A University Preparation Course, Alison M. Bunker
Conceptions Of Learning Identified By Indigenous Students Entering A University Preparation Course, Alison M. Bunker
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The increase in Indigenous participation in university courses in recent years has not been matched by an increase in graduation. In the mainstream university population, student success has been linked to approaches to learning, which are linked to conceptions of learning. This study investigates what conceptions of learning Indigenous students identify at the beginning of their university career. Thirty six students completed a 'Reflections on Learning Inventory' developed by Meyer (1995). Nine of these students were interviewed in depth about what they thought learning was and how they would go about it. The interview analysis for each of the nine …

Facilitative Or Favorable Conditions For Adult Learners To Acquire Oral Proficiency In English, Shigeko Suzuki Hironaga
Facilitative Or Favorable Conditions For Adult Learners To Acquire Oral Proficiency In English, Shigeko Suzuki Hironaga
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
Social interaction in the language classroom has been said to contribute to the acquisition of oral proficiency in a target language by presumably facilitating comprehension and learner production through negotiation of meaning. Since a great portion of interaction is initiated by teacher questions, numerous studies on questions have been conducted. The majority of these studies, however, fail to provide adequate explanations for the conditions or environments which result in successful or unsuccessful elicitation. The study investigated the relationship between input, interaction and learner production with a focus on internal and external factors to teacher questions. Factors such as form, function, …
Classroom Environments Of Coaching And Non-Coaching Teachers At A Large Midwestern High School, Lance L. Raabe
Classroom Environments Of Coaching And Non-Coaching Teachers At A Large Midwestern High School, Lance L. Raabe
Student Work
This descriptive study examined the classroom environments of coaching and non-coaching teachers. The purpose of examining factors involving classroom environments is to help determine what the best possible learning environment is for both teachers and students. In this study, high school teachers and teacher-coaches were asked to give their perceptions of the environment of a single class period during the school day. Research done in this area has focused on the perceptions of students and has subsequently used and compared this data to describe the "ideal" and "real" classroom environment. This study, comparing teachers and teacher-coaches, used the Short Form …
